I actually saw this film when it came out in the theaters, design Device benefit when. I must have been perhaps 11 years weak. Poor movie, totally confusing, and a script that was most likely contrived over numerous doses of LSD. However, I was quite taken by two things: (1) Terence Imprint and (2) the scene where Modesty peels the counterfeit skin off Willie Garvin’s befriend to scream all those tools and gadgets. When I discovered there was actually a book to read that might elaborate all I had seen, I jumped on it. The book, unlike the film, was amazing, and Peter O’Donnell’s stories only improved from the first original accurate up until the final Modesty Blaise book was published 6 or 7 years ago. I cannot recommend this movie but I can and do hasten you to go to your library (the most likely space you will obtain a Modesty Blaise book) and gather the books, particularly the ones called “I, Lucifer” and “A Taste for Death.” Substantial fun reading, the Modesty of the books quite outdoes James Bond for sheer interest.
Though this is not a knee-slapper as satire, and certainly no thrill-giver as an action flick, this film has old better than Bond films like Thunderball, generically speaking the ground of this satire. Modesty Blaise is loosely based on a comic-book super-heroine and played by Monica Vitti. The humor is very laughable, yet needle-sharp in its mockery of the amorality of empire and espionage, and in its parody of the conventions of the action-hero movie, its mad-camp villain, its tools, its blue waters. It hits its dry droll notes and jazzy visual chords without pedantry, seeming very British and looking very Italian, a nice trick. Stoned in a rather stately device, and head-scratchingly complex in places, this movie is shrewd enough to avoid the insist silliness of many 60s movies. The film is visually resplendent and tantalizing, with tremendous colors and compositions with lots of site and depth: the toughest thing about Modesty Blaise is that it moves at a wander more like an Italian sex-and-class eye than an action movie or typical spoof; indeed, the film freely recalls Antonioni’s L’Aventura, (which also starred Vitti), especially in its Mediterranean situation shots. And after all else is said, Monica Vitti remains an absolute stunner here, a moral movie star, with a face of a thousand shades of tenderness and cunning. She also has astronomical hair that changes about every five minutes. (Her hair itself is a better actress than Madonna.) Vitti and her sidekick, Terence Effect, a mod Adonis, have a frosty chemistry, and even thunder in one pleasantly bizarre scene. Dirk Bogarde, the villain, is in a role unlike any other he ever played, but he may remove the movie. This is an anomaly: a rocknroll movie–droll, nonconformist, and hip–with almost no rocknroll in the soundtrack.

This astounding film is based upon the short anecdote, “Paddle Well, My Brother”, which appears in an anthology of short stories titled, “The Snow Walker”, written by Canadian icon, Farley Mowat. The legend takes set somewhere approach the Artic in 1953 and opens with a murky figure traipsing slowly across a frozen wasteland. The film then flashes serve to a time three months earlier in a settlement called “Yellow Knife”, located somewhere in the Northwest Territories of Canada. A raucous sort of set, the viewer is introduced to a young and delicate, old-fashioned World War II fighter pilot named Charles Halliday (Barry Pepper) . He is a free living, arrogant, hot dogging young gun, who now flies over the frozen wastelands of the far north, working as a bush pilot for a man named Shepherd (James Cromwell) .

While making a routine delivery in a desolate location, he is met by a miniature family of Inuit with a seemingly tubercular daughter (Annabella Piugattuk) ) who clearly needs medical attention. They quiz that Johnny recall her to the hospital in Yellow Knife but Johnny refuses to do so. When they bribe him with some significant ivory tusks, he has a change of heart, taking the young woman on board. Unfortunately, the diminutive aircraft experiences technical difficulties, and they demolish in the frozen tundra, a couple of hundred miles from civilization, but are physically relatively unhurt by the break.
Thinking that he would do better on his bear, Charlie divests himself of the young woman, leaving her with some supplies but believing that he is consigning her to her death. He is a young man with small respect for the Inuit people. He simply does not stare the value in their culture, which he does not understand, and marches off into the bleak wilderness on his contain. He, who is a whiz with machinery, has shrimp knowledge on how to survive in that bleak but fine wasteland. Consequently, by the time he is about a week into his scuttle through this unforgiving tundra, he is overcome by nature and the vicissitudes of this harsh and alien environment. Fortunately for him, the young woman he left slow is far more resourceful than he is. She catches up with him, finding him on the brink of death, and nurses him encourage to life, becoming the key to his survival.

It is only after all this happens that he bothers to learn that she is called Kanaalaq. Slowly, he learns to connect with this young woman in a plot that he has never connected with anyone. He learns to relish her, discovering that she is magnificent both inside and out. Through his relationship with Kanaalaq, whom he begins to regard as a diminutive sister, he learns how to appreciate another human being, becoming reborn as a better person in the process. He also learns to connect to the land and, in doing so, finds the strength to survive his ordeal. Kanaalaq ends up giving Charlie Halliday the gift of life.
What happens to Charlie and Kanaalaq, how they manage, and how their relationship develops is at the heart of this film. It is the memoir of two cultures that arrive together and seamlessly mesh in order to survive out on the frozen tundra. It is an intensely appealing and deeply personal film that is simply glorious. With a minimum of dialogue, this film sends out a major message.
Barry Pepper is terrific in the role of Charlie Halliday, a flawed human being who manages to overcome his shortcomings and become all the better for his ordeal. He infuses the character with a positive charisma, so that when his shortcomings become apparent, the viewer does not detest him but, rather, hopes that he will explore the error of his ways and come by redemption. Newcomer Annabella Piugattuk is simply sensational, giving a well-nuanced and very touching performance in the role of the dying Inuit girl, Kanaalaq. Her role is central to the film, and she is a breakout star. They searched for six months, until they found her, having auditioned hundreds of young women in the process, as they were looking for someone indigenous to the station to maintain the female lead. The casting director discovered her at a local teen dance in the Northwest Territories, and what a accumulate she is.
This Canadian production was the recipient of numerous Genie nominations, which are the Canadian equivalent of Academy Award nominations, and are conferred by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television. I have to say that, in original years, I have been mightily impressed with the originality, quality, and sophistication of Canadian films. They are sometimes simply the best films to be found. This one is no exception. Deftly directed by Charles Martin Smith, who is also an actor, he fully understands the opinion that less is oftentimes more and exacts grand performances from the entire cast. Moreover, he perfectly captures the majesty, beauty, and sheer bleakness of the landscape that acts as the backdrop for this dazzling myth. Bravo!
The 2003 Canadian film is one of those independent films that I call a “gem”. It’s a simple yarn. Dwelling in 1953 in northern Canada, a bush pilot, played by Barry Pepper, agrees to wing a seriously ill young Inuit woman, who seems to have tuberculosis, to a town where she can obtain medical attention. He’s reluctant to do this but her family bribes him with a pair of walrus tusks. Played by first-time actress Annabella Piugattuk, this Intuit woman is outstanding in her role, as she helps the pilot to survive after their plane crashes and also teaches him some vital lessons about life.
Yes, this is a hackneyed sage with no right surprises. But under the expert hand of writer/director Charles Martin Smith, the film comes out better than the sum of its parts. I found myself completely drawn in and also learned a lot about survival in the frozen north. I applaud the director’s decision to expend an authentic Inuit actress in the main role which made the film seem valid. It was well-paced with unbiased enough tension to preserve me wondering what would happen next.
This is a beautiful film and I definitely recommend it. And it is especially first-rate to leer during a summer heat spell.

Reason Has Nothing To Do With It![]()
So many sequels, so little time. Should you spend some of that time with this sequel to the popular and funny Bridget Jones’ Diary? If you have a taste for the light and frothy, certainly. If we were discussing the book, The Edge of Reason, I would say “no”— there are far better books, and better sequels, out there. But this is that rare case where the second book was rushed out to capitalize on the wild popularity of the first, and disappointing—– while this movie, not so rushed, is only casually based on and certainly better than the book.
Although neither book nor movie quite live up to the first, fans of the first movie will be well entertained by the second. And I, for one, am immensely glad that at least one horribly painful scene in the book is not even hinted at in the movie: Mr. Darcy keeps most of his dignity intact.
Can you enjoy this movie without seeing the first Diary? Yes, you learn enough of the characters early that this movie can stand on its own. However, I would bet that if you even smile during this one, you will want to rent or buy the first. You’ll laugh out loud.
Especially if you love Colin Firth and Hugh Grant, as I do, this sequel is time well spent. I can’t spell out why Colin Firth is so attractive, but there it is: he is. He is a much greater presence in this movie than the first— after all, he (as “Mark Darcy”) and Bridget have a real relationship as the movie opens. Of course they —uhmm— “mess” it up (“language, Bridget!”) with misunderstandings, jealousies, and very funny mishaps. I am not a huge fan of humor based on one character’s running the continuum from private embarrassment to public humiliation; yet Bridget, who constantly manages to embarrass herself and others in public, is such a good sport and so charming as Everygirl, that we laugh or groan with her in recognition of those moments in ourselves, and not at her. There are some great laughs in this movie.
Some of them come with Hugh Grant, who seems to have lost the weight that Renee Zellweger gained. Too thin but still devilishly attractive, Hugh’s rakish character Daniel Cleaver hangs around to take advantage of the misunderstandings between Bridget and Mark Darcy– even if he has to “hang around” Thailand to do it. Cad that he is, when Bridget really becomes a damsel in distress, he evaporates into thin air. That’s all right. We know there will be some rough times in between, but surely Mark Darcy, human rights lawyer, will come cantering in on a white horse to save Bridget from Thai prison, right? Not quite. But with a few comic kinks, close enough.
I don’t expect Renee Zellweger to receive another Oscar nomination for this one. She is fun, she is appealing, and she is good, but this is not the script for it. I’ve heard the British objections to her inconsistent, not to say hokey, accent, and while they have some merit here, I do applaud her for bravely diving into Everygirl-dom, a little overweight, a little embarrassed and embarrassing, but with self-awareness enough to make her a cult favorite of all of us “Singletons”. She’s effervescent, and she’s resilient. Gotta love her.
If the movie was shot on location, it largely lost the advantage of it in Thailand, but that is a mere quibble. A stronger criticism: the first movie’s soundtrack was marvelously energetic and witty— who could forget “It’s Raining Men”? This one, however, tries too hard: too many oldies which are favorites because they are very good songs, but which have been used in too many soundtracks. Even slightly new arrangements don’t imbue them with the freshness the movie deserved. However, the costumer showed some wit in this episode, as well as underscoring some of the broader humor.
Not serious, not deep, not an exercise for the intellect, “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason” is enjoyable and bubbly, and a darned good time. B–

I don’t usually review films that I only saw by chance and then didn’t like, but I’m making an exception here, as “Bridget Jones – The Edge of Reason” is a true disaster all round. I saw the first movie and found it mildly amusing, so when this turned up I thought I’d give it a go, but I’m sorry I bothered.
Basically, the Bridget Jones in this film is a total idiot, who messes up everything in her life including her pride, her love life, and her career. Not in a funny or endearing way, though, which would encourage sympathy. And not in a zany Lucille Ball-type way either, that would get you laughing. No, just in a totally stupid and pointless way that makes you want to hit her. Every embarrassing faux-pas or misunderstanding the character stumbles through (and there are dozens) just makes you want to switch off and leave her to it. She messes up every single aspect of her relationship, her job, and her holiday by saying and doing the most brainless and unfathomable things, in ways that a real person would never do. Or if they did, they wouldn’t have any friends…and certainly not Hugh Grant and Colin Firth fighting over them!
Rene Zellweger playes Bridget as a totally unloveable, boring and socially inept loser…I don’t think this is the actress’s fault, or even due to the original charcter in the Helen Fielding novels, but more due to the terrible script and direction. Why does Bridget walk everwhere like a constipated duck, for example? Why does she laugh and sigh at every stupid blunder she makes, and just waddle on to the next stumbling point? Even when she’s lost the love of her life, it’s all summed up with a shrug and a rueful smile. Come on, girl, try and make us care! I sure didn’t!
If that wasn’t bad enough, the last third of the movie almost made me shout at the screen…Dopey Bridget is duped into smuggling a massive stash of cocaine out of Thailand, and gets caught trying to board a plane at Bangkok airport. She then gets thrown into a Thai women’s prison. This notoriously unpleasant predicament really doesn’t belong in a (supposedly) frothy comedy like this is, but it just gets worse, as have-a-go Bridget gets all (and I mean ALL) the inmates on her side which results in a huge sing-along scene and lots of laughing and hugging. Sorry, I don’t think so somehow. This sugar-coated representation of the notoriously brutal Thai prison regime left a nasty taste in my mouth…not alleviated in the slightest when Bridget gets an anticipated (but blatently unlikely) full pardon and early release, just because her lawyer boyfriend pulls the right strings.
The above illustration is the worst example, but I didn’t find any of Bridgets other antics entertaining or affecting in the slightest either. She’s somehow got a high profile TV reporters job, but she can’t even do it. Everyone makes jokes about her weight and she just thinks it’s funny. With a central and supporting cast of usually reliable performers, it’s tragic how lame this film has turned out. There’s nothing apparent to make you understand or care about any of the lead characters actions. And that means a waste of 90 minutes in my book. Make better use of your time and give this one a miss.

Bridget Jones 1 was amusing and light. Bridget Jones Edge of Reason should never have been released. This movie is absolutely terrible from start to finish. Firstly, it lacks the originality and charm of the first one — a symptom of being a forced sequel. Secondly, it’s not funny in the least. Thirdly, the acting is terrible. I am usually a fan of Renee, but she is terrible here. Hugh Grant puts in his usual canned performance, and someone should really tell him it’s time for him to try a slightly different role in the interest of saving his career and pride. Colin First is just plain unlikeable. Anyway, I wouldn’t recommend this movie to anyone.

After a long (13 years) absence since her first motion record (1988′s Elvira, Mistress of the Dusky) the wise cracking dread hostess is befriend. Now it’s the mid 19th Century, the setting Transylvania, the star none other than Elvira. While en route to Paris, to star in “Yes, I Can Can,” Elvira and her robust French maid Zou Zou gain themselves in creepy mysterious castle Helsebus.
A foolish choice to hitch a scramble on a stage coach lands them in Strange Central, where the family is cursed, the Master of the House (played by Rocky Horror’s Richard O’Brien) is a lunatic, and Elvira apparently bears a striking (like a frying pan across the head) resemblance to the House’s slack lady, Elura who was said to have committed suicide exactly ten years to the day. However one is lead to enjoy atrocious play was enthusiastic, that one happens to be Elvira.
Can Elvira survive this creepy castle and its inhabitants for two rotund days and nights? Will she rush and create it to Paris? Or will she suffer the same fate of Elura Helsebus?

This movie pays fiendishly fun homage to the customary Corman/Poe, Vincent Impress flicks of the 1950′s. Complete with dramatic sets, secret passages, curses, wall entombment and even a pit complete with stout swinging (and actually perilous unprejudiced ask Elvira) pendulum.
While Elvira fans will catch this gothic romp a hilarious hay trot, non Elvira fans are obvious to earn something to devour. Besides Elvira’s gravity defying pair this movie actually proves to contain up against today’s market of CGI laden movies, with Hollywood large names and multi million dollar budgets.

All said and done, Elvira’s Timorous Hills are definitely worth surveying. Mr. Effect would be proud.
When I first rented this over the weekend, I opinion it was abominable. I expected something more like Elvira’s Mistress of the Murky movie, which is fantastic. However, as I started looking at the special features of this film, I realized what the film was trying to effect and the budget that they worked with and it was actually a very qualified film when looked at this intention.

Haunted Hills is a parody of ragged Vincent Price/Roger Corman movies. If you are a fan of old-school dismay, this film will form so noteworthy more sense for you. Because I had not seen these movies when watching the film I was ready to trash it even though I generally care for Elvira!
My only qualm was the scenes with Elvira and the stable-hand, Adrian. They wanted to beget a joke about dubbed movies (and coincidentally the actor did not suppose a word of English) so he spoke all of his lines in his native Romanian tongue and while it was silly in the first scene they had together, I got frustrated with it by the extinguish of the movie. I kept hoping he would suddenly begin speaking in English though I was amused that they kept the bit going through the whole film (then I learned that there was a worthy reason for it!) .

I contemplate allotment of the contrast between this film and the last one is that the first film probably had a higher budget. Some of the actors were working on no budget/low budget as a favor to Cassandra and the director. Having financial attend can go a long method into the quality of a film.
That being said, this has got plenty of Elvrira and lots of boob jokes and boob shots. The performance by the actor playing Dr. Bradley Bradley was very generous and I also enjoyed the actress playing Lady Hellsebus. I also liked the costumes, though there were different period styles combined together.
So, if you are looking for a very contemporary horror-esque comedy you are not going to accept this movie. It’s very cliche because it really is trying to be very cliche. Once you understand that, the movie will be so distinguished more exquisite.

This charming miniature romantic comedy directed by Melville Shavelson is one of the brightest spots in Sophia Loren’s early Hollywood films. He wisely old-fashioned Sophia’s humorous talents which were often wasted by American directors. Having worked with her in another early gem, “Houseboat” with Cary Grant, Shavelson was aware of what would acquire Sophia shine and here he showcases all of her many gargantuan charms.

The DVD is presented in a provocative and glittering print of the astonishing cinematography of Robert Surtees. One of the grand camera men who’s credits include 1962′s “Mutiny On The Bounty”, “Quo Vadis”, “Raintree County”, and “The Last Represent Display”. He captures breathtaking shots of little and teaming Naples and the enormous sunny vistas of Capri. In his hands this stunning section of Italy becomes a fine widescreen postcard that beckons the viewer into the record.
The procure by Alessandro Cicognini (Indiscretion of an American Wife) and Carlo Savina is pure Italian gold and fits the laughable proceedings perfectly. And the addition of the song Tu Vuo Fa L’Americano in Sophia’s club act is apt. This approved Italian song of the 1950′s resurfaced effectively in “The Talented Mr. Ripley”. It is fun to spy how Sophia interprets the song for the tourists on Capri.

Clark Gable, cast as stodgy American Michael Hamilton is gruff and amusing as he first battles and then falls for Sophia. He has many standout scenes with her and with child actor, Marietto. In particular is the scene where he and Sophia mix killer drinks for each other at the bar.
Marietto as Sophia’s nephew Nando is a exiguous laughable whirlwind. He is astounding in his naturalness in his scenes with Loren. A skinny ball of ingenuity and energy he is particularly comic when he is trying to accumulate his draw with both Loren and Gable.
The titanic Italian director Vittorio De Sica nearly runs off with the cameras, site and crew in his performance as Sophia’s lawyer. He works so well with her, and why not, he was her director in “Gold of Naples”, “Two Women” and the astounding “Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.” His speech in the courtroom scene is a standout.
All this unbelievable talent surrounds Sophia Loren in what is really her point to. She is pure magic as Lucia Curcio, a woman of passionate worship of life and family. She dominates the record as well she should because it is her talent as an actress and her extraordinary beauty that brought her to this point in her career. Her comedic turns and exercise of Italian gestures turn this into a joyous romp for both her and the audience.
After viewing “It Started In Naples” you may accumulate yourself singing. Tu Vuo Fa L’Italiano.
This is my accepted movie with Sofia. She is at her most gorgeous and this is her most charming role. I am a tremendous fan and I hold there will never be anyone as sensual with an accent that can actually command, act and acquire everyones attention the contrivance she did in this movie. The young boy Nando is also charming and captures the essence of Italian childhood in that time. I recomend this movie as a must survey for anyone who was ever attracted to Sofia and Italy. The scenery is attractive and the tale is attractive. Gawk this movie and you’ll want to go visit Italy.

Chili Palmer: Shylock, Movie Producer![]()
A loan shark from Florida, who loves movies and winds up in Hollywood on a collection job, decides to take a shot at the movie business while he’s there, in “Get Shorty,” directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. Dark humor and richly textured characters drive this story of Chili Palmer (John Travolta), the shylock from Miami Beach who aspires to a life beyond keeping a book for thugs, in this faithful adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel. When circumstances take him to Las Vegas to look for one Leo Devoe (David Paymer), a dry-cleaner in debt up to his eyeballs who blew town after an airline scam, Chili goes on to Hollywood to do a favor for the casino operator who tipped him off as to Leo’s whereabouts. The “favor” is contacting film director Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman) who has payment overdue on a note issued to him by the casino. Zimm has made a name for himself (at least in his own mind) by directing horror movies; but he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed. Ultimately, Chili gets involved with Zimm and actress Karen Flores (Rene Russo), who has starred in some of Zimm’s horror flicks, as well as with two time Academy Award nominee Martin Weir (Danny DeVito), the “shorty” of the title. Chili is finally in his element, but his Miami Beach days are not yet behind him; there’s still some settling up to do according to one Ray “Bones” Barboni (Dennis Farina), owner of the book kept by Chili in Florida. Travolta not only goes the distance here, but creates a definitive character in Chili; even as Sean Connery is James Bond, and Basil Rathbone is Sherlock Holmes, Travolta “is” Chili Palmer. With nuance and charisma, he does this guy from the inside out. He has the look and the mannerisms; he walks the walk and talks the talk. And nobody in the history of the cinema has used a cigarette as a prop better than he does in this movie. It’s a commanding, Oscar-worthy performance, every bit as good (possibly even better) than the role of Vincent he created in “Pulp Fiction.” His presence simply dominates the film, and he’s up against some stiff competition, because this movie is filled with great characters. Not only Hackman, who does a terrific job as Zimm, but Russo, who sizzles, and DeVito, who adds some real flair as the “Movie Star,” and Farina, whose toughness and lack of wit make him a memorable character. Also exceptional are Delroy Lindo, as Bo Catlett, a thug and wanna-be movie producer, James Gandolfini, as “Bear,” a stuntman who works with Catlett, and Jon Gries as Ronnie, a “Hollywood” style tough guy who also works with Catlett. Sonnenfeld did a great job of bringing this world of “Get Shorty” to life. The story is interesting and delivered with outstanding dialogue and plenty of action, all of which Sonnenfeld keeps moving at a perfect pace and with impeccable timing. This is one thoroughly enjoyable, funny movie that absolutely begs for a sequel. In recommending it, I have to borrow one of Chili Palmer’s best lines: “Look at me.” Because that says it all. This is one movie you don’t want to miss.

It takes a loan shark leading the way to make Hollywood honest. “Get Shorty” returns in a new 2 disc “Collector’s Edition” DVD just in time for the sequel “Too Cool” which will be premiering in theaters in March. Translating Elmore Leonard’s novels to the screen can be a tricky business luckily both screenwriter Scott Frank and director Barry Sonnenfeld are both up to the task with an inventive dark comedic film. Chili Palmer (John Travolta) heads west to collect a debt from down-and-out B-movie producer Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman). When Harry can’t pay, Chili opts to help him make a movie about, well, Chili Palmer. The catch is that Chili and Harry need a star to make their movie viable. Chili quickly finds that the film business shares a lot in common with the world of organized crime. Chili romances B-Movie queen Karen Flores (Rene Russo) an ex- of Harry’s and persuades film star Martin Weir (Danny DeVito) to star in the film but not before running into a Cadillac of very funny mishaps along the way. Featuring a great performances from Dennis Farina as the clueless Ray `Bones’ Barboni, Travolta, Hackman, Russo, DeVito and a pre-Sopranos James Gandolfini, “Get Shorty” positively sparkles with wit and energy.
Sporting a new high definition transfer “Get Shorty” looks simply marvelous. With a sharp looking transfer showing a minimum of digital artifacts and no analog flaws, “Get Shorty” deserves the deluxe treatment. The image has amazing depth and an image sharper than Chili’s aim. The colors practically leap out from the screen brighter than Harry Zimm’s blindingly white teeth from the moment the pink and blue titles pop up on the screen until the moment we hear “cut” at the end. With blacks richer and darker than Chili’s stolen coat, MGM has done a superb job of translating this modern classic to DVD. The crystal clear sound comes across with more presence than B-Movie queen Karen Flores’ screams.
Extras are exceptionally good in this “Special Edition”. It’s like having seconds of a terrific desert; while no one really needs it, it’s great to have just the same. We get a number of notable extras as part of this rich meal. The second disc has three featurettes on different aspects of the film, the deleted “Graveyard Scene”, outtakes, the “Get Shorty” party reel, a documentary from Bravo Channel on the making of the movie and a sneak peak at “Be Cool”. “Get Shorty: Look at Me” opens the book on how Elmore Leonard came up with the plot for “Get Shorty” and developed the idea. DeVito, Travolta, Hackman, Russo, Sonnenfeld and other key cast and crew participate in this featurette on the production of the film. Full of clips from the movie to illustrate the points made throughout the featurette, it’s a great summation of the greatness of this film. It’s a 30 minute love fest reminding fans why they love this movie so much. The 20 minute “Get Shorty: Wise Guys and Dolls” focuses on the fun, complex characters of the movie. “The Graveyard Scene” featurette allows Sonnenfeld to comment on the single deleted scene of the movie included the hilarious, well, graveyard scene. Featuring a funny cameo with Ben Stiller, Sonnenfeld clearly regretted cutting the scene but Sonnenfeld couldn’t find a place for sequence where it fit. The behind-the-scenes stuff and interviews last longer than the actual scene itself. “Going Again” features footage from outtakes and a discussion from Sonnenfeld about the technique of using long takes, pulling out the best bits and putting it together to make magic. The sneak peak for “Be Cool” promises that the sequel to “Get Shorty” promises to be as funny as the first film. Set in the music business, it may not be more than a promo piece for the film but it gives viewers enough of a taste to rope `em in.
Bravo’s “Page to Screen” documentary featuring Peter Gallagher features plenty of interviews with critics, other writers and focuses as much on how Elmore Leonard comes up with the material in his books, writes them and, once again, takes us behind-the-scenes of the production of the movie. The real treat is hearing from the real Chili Palmer discussing the “reel” Chili Palmer and Leonard’s character. The “Party Reel” mainly consists of bits and piece of cut footage and behind-the-scenes stuff nothing earth shattering or all that funny. In addition to the “Get Shorty” theatrical trailer and we get two promos one for “Fargo” and one for “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”. My only complaint is the MGM “promo” opener that they put on ALL of their DVDs. It’s annoying and, unfortunately, there’s no way to pass it by. It’s a pretty minor issue but the fact that it’s on all of their DVDs makes it a real pain.
A dry, witty commentary by Barry Sonnenfeld highlights this disc. The only drawback is the lack of participation of Travolta, Hackman, Russo and DeVito. I realize they have busy schedules but it would have been a real highlight and perfect addition to this DVD.
A hip, funny comedy that continues to deliver in spades, “Get Shorty” looks terrific, sounds great and has some terrific special features. This is an example of a re-release that’s worth upgrading. Definitely worth owing on DVD and purchasing a second time if you love the movie. This IS the version to own.

“Get Shorty ” in my opinion is one of the most hilarious send ups of the Hollywood movie industry ever put to film.Director, Barry Sonnenfeld and writer, Elmore Leonard have put their talents together to create a satirical film, which ‘takes no prisoners’ in its look at the underhanded ways, that folks wheel and deal to get movies made.The film centers on a charismatic mobster (John Travolta), who while on a trip to L.A., decides to switch careers. He wants to make movies!This is not as far fetched as it seems. Apparently being a movie producer isn’t that far of a jump from being a loan shark or racketeer! Along the way Chilly meets up with with a schlock movie producer, a scream queen, a L.A. hood and his henchman, another mobster from Miami and finally the ‘Shorty’ (a self-involved, superstar actor)of the film’s title. All of them underestimate Chilly and think he is just a dumb hood, who can be conned out of some major, illegal money waiting in a locker at the L.A. airport. But Chilly seems to know all the right moves and plays everyone at their own game.Writer, Elmore Leonard wrote this fast paced, witty story after experiencing a real life, frustrating job of trying to write a script for vertically challenged actor, Dustin Hoffman… Revenge must be sweet, because it inspired a great piece of comic writing.The cast of actors in this movie is wonderful. Normally, I’m not the biggest John Travolta fan, but his take on mobster, Chilly Palmer is electrifying. Travolta plays the character with a swagger, confindence, and a smile that is sheer perfection! Gene Hackman is also hilarious as the sleaziest of sleazy Hollywood producers. This guy would sell out his own mother if it ment getting a piece of the gross!.Finally, Danny DeVito just makes this movie with his send up of every spoiled rotten, self-indulgent Hollywood actor that could ever come to mind. Kudos should also go for great, comic supporting roles from James Gandolfini and Dennis Farina.For an evening of some very funny Hollywood satire, I recommend you to get…”Get Shorty”!

It’s a hasten of the soul as a man goes home in his heart, in this dramatization of the proper sage of Alvin Straight, who drove a lawn mower over three-hundred miles through the plot of Iowa and into Wisconsin, to perceive his brother, a stroke victim with whom he had not spoken for ten years. “The Straight Fable,” directed by David Lynch, recounts the record of Alvin (Richard Farnsworth), who status out to study his brother, Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton), upon hearing of his stroke. Alvin is prevented from driving because of abominable eyesight, and he won’t acquire a bus because he doesn’t trust another’s driving. A widower who lives with his daughter, Rose (Sissy Spacek), Alvin, not a man of means, resorts to the only scheme he knows how, to win to Lyle. He needs to set the unpleasant blood late them before it’s too late; an estrangement born of “enrage and pride.” Hauling a make-shift trailer, and with three five-gallon cans of gas and a cooler elephantine of hot dogs, Alvin sets out, alone and definite, on his lawn mower. Now in the twilight of his life, having learned to “separate the wheat from the chaff,” the run affords Alvin plenty of time to believe on his life, and steels him in his quest to do what he feels he has to do. Along the design he befriends and is befriended by the strangers he encounters; a testimony to the bountifulness of the human spirit. When a young man asks him what the worst thing is about being former, he replies, “Remembering when you were young.” Richard Farnsworth gives the performance of a lifetime as Alvin, this stubborn, prideful man, who has learned humility with age, and you can perceive the wisdom of his years in his eyes. Farnsworth connects with the audience from the beginning, aptly conveying the yearning of a soul in need of atonement, and the determination of the man to execute his amends. Sissy Spacek, also, gives a terrifically nuanced performance as Rose, the “tiresome” daughter who lives daily with demons of her believe. That the members of the Academy failed to nominate her for best-supporting actress for her work here is nothing short of criminal; her Rose is a splendid section of work. David Lynch, as well, has done a great job of bringing Alvin’s yarn to the mask. He has woven a rich visual and emotional tapestry, all poignantly delivered with a gentle hand. Beautifully photographed, the lush vistas of the Midwest contemplate Alvin’s spot of mind, underscoring the deeper meanings of what is really a spiritual fling, during which the past mingles with the demonstrate. Lynch has taken a wistful, almost poetic reach throughout, which, together with the legend is reminiscent of Ingmar Bergman’s “Wild Strawberries.” The scene in which Alvin finally meets up with Lyle is perfectly and touchingly executed, and is one of the most memorable scenes in the movie. The supporting cast includes James Cada (Danny), Everett McGill (Tom), Barbara E. Robertson (Deer Woman), John Farley (Thorvald), and Kevin P. Farley (Harold) . With an artistic hand, Lynch has crafted an unforgettable film. “The Straight Account” is Alvin’s tale, but the bound belongs to us; a reminder of what is really well-known in life, and the needs we all fragment at one time or another. It’s an animated movie that will touch you and develop you reflect, as well; and as far as I’m concerned, that’s about as apt as it gets.
With ‘The Straight Story’ David Lynch has weaved together a subtle, animated epic about age, regret, and family. The record is of Alvin Straight, a 73 year musty man who has seen most of what life has to dish out and learns that his brother suffered a stroke. With abominable eyes and no license, he sets out on a breeze on a riding lawnmower to discover his brother, who he hasn’t spoken to in ten years.
What I loved most about this movie is the simplicity; of the tale, the characters, the filming. Yet within that classic style is a movie that is incredibly racy. The stories that Alvin has to negate about his life are saddening, touching, and almost repulsive. He talks about being conventional, about fighting in World War II, and about his regrets of not speaking to his brother. He runs into quite a few people along the design who back him out, and their stories contribute to a beautifully crafted script.
Richard Farnsworth is convincing in the role of Alvin. His abilities are most especially outlined in the dim tone of his issue, and the contemplate of regret and hope in his eyes. It is rare that I have grown to respect and admire a character so great. David Lynch’s direction is not dismal or creepy like his other works, but carefully and nicely photographed in expansive harmony with the script. The cinematography is smoothe, and the extended takes reveal his abilities as a director and the actors abilities as well.

Steve Martin and Queen Latifah lead a extraordinary cast in this surprisingly repulsive, always delectable, laugh-out-loud comedy.
Peter Sanderson (Martin) is a divorcee who spends some of his personal time in a good chat room, flirting with a woman he hasn’t seen. His interest in her grows into a little infatuation after she sends a describe of herself via email. But when the two meet, he gets a huge surprise. She’s not the woman in the picture; at least not the woman seen up stop in the relate. It turns out that she is an African American woman named Charlene Morton (Latifah), a criminal on parole who is seen getting arrested in the background of the recount she has sent. Slowly, Charlene begins to capture over Peter’s life, but perhaps that’s a satisfactory thing. Despite his divorce, he and his ex-wife Kate (Jean Shimmering), smooth have feelings for each other. Having divorced because of his excessive work habits, Charlene tries to notify Peter the joys of life and how to relish the importance of his neglected family.
Veteran actresses Betty White and Joan Plowright are downright hilarious in their petite roles, and Eugene Levy has an droll role as Martin’s best friend, who begins to tumble head over heels for Charlene, further complicating matters.

Betty White is painfully laughable and unsightly as Martin’s elderly neighbor. She is as racist as they reach, jabbering cruel lines of racist dialogue (a less entertaining but more offensive send-up of her “Lake Placid” role) . Don’t occupy her comments to heart, though. The film is unprejudiced trying to explain how biggoted some people can be. (It’s a shame how people like her actually exist.) Joan Plowright portrays a heiress client of Martin. She proves to be a substantial comedic actress, especially in the hilarious climactic nightclub scene.
Missi Pyle is astounding as Kate’s sister, a sort of Anna Nicole Smith type who takes pleasure out of dating older men. I could never have imagined Pyle in such a role, but she’s stout! Even Jean Shining is perfect for her role as the ex. Her Southern accent really gives her added sex appeal.
This is a predictable film, but it is also one of the funniest films to advance out in the past year. It is a simple, knowing, and fun comedy that’s a pure joy to gawk. Clever dialogue, touching moments, and a huge cast are a plus. Martin and Latifah (so knowing in Chicago) point to off their fantastic comedic talents and have improbable chemistry together. The film is a bit raunchy at times, but oh so amusing…recommended for a superb hearty laugh!!!!
I savor going to a movie where the audience laughs during the entire movie (intentionally, that is) . I wasn’t expected to have so grand fun during this movie but it proved to be a laugh riot. Steve Martin and Queen Latifah invent a tremendous comedy team . The supporting actors only add to the fun. Betty White as Martin’s racists/homophobic neighgbor, Joan Plowright as a rigid heiress that Martin needs to bring as a client to his law firm, and Eugene Levy is hilarious as Steve Martin’s best friend at the law firm, who makes no qualms about his feelings for Latifah’s Charlene. The fight scene between Latifah and actress Missi Pyle is worth the admission alone. I recommended this film to a friend at work who later told me that she and her husband thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m betting you will too. Its a gigantic film to capture a group of friends to and unbiased laugh and be comic.

I saw this film when it was first released in 1960 and saw it again recently, charmed as before by the sage line and the worthy acting under Fred Zinnemann’s shiny direction. Here’s the situation: Ida (Deborah Kerr) and Paddy (Robert Mitchum) Carmody and son Sean (Michael Anderson, Jr.) are sheep drovers in Australia in the 1920s, proceeding from one job to the next. Ida and son yearn to resolve down permanently somewhere (anywhere, really) whereas Paddy prefers itinerant roaming. Along the procedure, they encounter Rupert Venneker (Peter Ustinov), a used sea captain with aristocratic sensibilities. Most of the film focuses on their tenure on the Halstead ranch during which they become friends with Mrs. Firth (Glynis Johns), an innkeeper to whom Venneker is coyly attracted. During the course of the film, not mighty happens, really. Its grand charm is generated by the developing relationships between and among the lead characters.
Others have praised this film for apt reasons of their contain. Here are mine. First, there is huge and authentic human interest in the differences between Ida’s and Paddy’s contradictory definitions of “home.” For lack of better terms, between settling down and arresting on. Also, in collaboration with Zinnemann, Jack Hildyard enriches the development of the yarn with cinematography which is compellingly, indeed exquisitely appropriate to that time and set. Finally, all of the lead actors seem perfectly matched with the roles they play…especially Mitchum.

Briefly, I now portion some thoughts about him, first because he invests Paddy with a wholesome appeal which was for me unexpected, given the Mitchum persona as in Night of the Hunter (1955) and Home from the Hill (also 1960) and then, years later, in his portrayals of Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe in Farewell, My Handsome (1975) and The Titanic Sleep (1978) . His understated, highly-disciplined portrayal of Paddy is comparable with Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of Warren Schmidt. Although Kerr and Johns received an Academy Award nomination, Mitchum did not. I have always plan he was under-appreciated as an actor.
Set in the 1920s and about a family of Irish itinerant sheepherders, this film has panoramic views of Australia (cinematography by Jack Hildyard), a suited script, and a diverse and absorbing cast; the sheep also are terrific, and there are many glimpses of kangaroos, koalas and more, all spot to an upbeat get by Dimitri Tiomkin. The film also shows the backbreaking labor of shearing the sheep, and the hard life and hard drinking of the people who do it.
It has its fraction of drama, poignancy, and humor, the latter usually thanks to Peter Ustinov, who puts in another memorable performance as a British wanderer who is always able to extricate himself from romantic entanglements.
Deborah Kerr shines as Ida, the tough but sensitive wife who stands by her man through thick and thin (mostly thin) . Robert Mitchum is beneficial as her irresponsible husband, as is Michael Anderson Jr. as their son, and Glynis Johns adds her irrepressible charm as a pub owner.

Though not quite on the level of director Fred Zinnemann’s best work (like “High Noon”, “A Man for all Seasons”, and “Day of the Jackal”), it serene has his masterful touch, and is a lovely film, well worth viewing.
It was nominated for Best Actress, Represent, Director, Adapted Screenplay, and Supporting Actress (Johns), losing out to Elizabeth Taylor in the first category, and “The Apartment” and “Elmer Gantry” in the rest.
“The Sundowners” is solid entertainment from one of the gigantic directors of the 20th century, and total running time is 133 minutes.

MATCH POINT is considered by some to be a departure for Woody Allen, due largely to its setting and its few oddities that can sometimes be an annoying Allen trademark. Yet it is also a well acted and well developed film that would be reminiscent for some of films such as ANNIE HALL. In order to know for obvious, a person has to recognize it to determine and it’s certainly worth seeing.

The film tells the yarn of Chris Wilton, and Irish born tennis player who realizes there’s only so far his game will lift him, so he takes a job as a tennis pro hoping to obtain a connection with London’s upper class. His charm and ability ensure this will happen. He meets a client Tom Hewett, the son of a remarkable business leader. Wilton marries Tom’s sister, endears himself to his in-laws, and has a passionate affair with Nola, Tom’s fiancé then later ex-girlfriend. Powerful of the film focuses on the ways in which Wilton goes to mountainous lengths to conceal up his affair.
The actors fit their roles well. Chris Wilton is played masterfully by Irish born Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Rhys Meyers has the gape of someone who would fit into British upper class circles, and he comes across less as an imposter and more as a climber. Rhys Meyers, who is familiar to many who saw the film BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM, again an Irish lad trying to originate it in England, albeit in very different circles, demonstrates he’s a believable and versatile actor. Scarlet Johansson plays the American actress Nola, likewise gives a phenomenal performance. The Hewett Family: Brian Cox as father Alec, Penelope Wilton as mother Eleanor, Mathew Goode as Tom and Emily Mortimer as Chris’ wife Chloe seem like British aristocrats, oblivious to all that is happening round them, yet believable too. Perhaps one of the films strengths is the fact that the Hewetts are oblivious to Chris’ scheming and climbing, and that Chris is not a character whose controlled by ambition as great as his desire not to loose the noble life he’s created for himself.

My guess is that since MATCH POINT was nominated for several Golden Globe Awards and will likely be nominated for Academy Awards too, people will pick explore of this film. One of our local newspapers praised MATCH POINT because it was a Woody Allen film that was not typical Allen fare. Another paper praised it because it is so Woody Allen, but plot in London rather than Current York. The long and the short of it is, chances are you’ll bask in this film whether you like Woody Allen or not.
MOVIE: Do you ever sit and glance a movie and try and guess the ending? Do you ever try and guess what direction a film is going? Well, I dare you to try and guess this film’s outcome, go ahead, I dare you. Match Point is Woody Allen’s character leer as to how luck plays a role in our lives. Match Point opens appropriately enough with a sideline plan of a tennis ball going help and forth across the bag in tiresome motion. The narrator is the exclaim of the main character, Chris, played by Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. He describes the game of tennis as luck, that once in a while the ball will hit the gather. The frame then freezes as the ball hits the gather, and he describes that luck determines which side of the regain the ball will plunge. Chris, who is an all-pro tennis player, decides to step down from playing and takes up teaching for awhile while he decides what he wants to do with his life. His latest student, Tom, shares a passion of opera with him and invites him to his family’s balcony seats. There he meets Tom’s sister, and he falls in care for with her. However, he soon meets Nola, a fair woman who lures him in with her eyes. He soon finds out that Nola is Tom’s soon to be wife. This is the film as it seems. Chris begins to have an affair with Nola, and after she breaks up with Tom they continue to romance without the knowledge of Tom’s family. He gets married to Tom’s sister and they are now expecting a child, his father in-law lands him a dream job at one of his corporations. Yet, it is unexcited the lure of the temptress that calls to him. Woddy Allen sets up a scrape for our main character that raises the demand between cherish and lust, and luck and fate. While you may demand this film to be lustful drama, you have no concept where Allen takes you next. The shimmering aspect of the film, is that there is no glean. I disapprove films without a bag, I believe music is 50% of a film’s emotional attain on the audience, but where there is no current salvage there is opera. Allen uses opera to structure the scenes, since it is the one thing that ties Chris to the family. The opera changes in tone and emotion as the scene does, so it works to perfection. The film is involving, you may come by yourself debating about what happens in the kill, but you realize it all ties in with what this movie is about. The film state is something that you’d inquire from Hitchcock, and it is a luscious one at that. The movie is inviting and opinion provoking even if it doesn’t seem plausible at times.
ACTING: Jonathan Rhys-Meyers does a great job even though I mediate some of his dialogue seems stilted, but he’s not to blame for that. He does a fantatsic job with what Woody Allen gives him. Scarlett Johansson is perfectly cast as the temptress, and she even gives her somewhat commercial character a human side as well. Spacious acting, even though the dialogue is stilted at times.
BOTTOM LINE: The film will lead you one intention only to produce a though-provoking left and purchase you where you wouldn’t put a question to. You have no thought what’s coming, and I dare you to guess the ending before it starts to unfold. The film is lustrous and an entertaining perceive, but it really doesn’t boast any technical highlights. Cinematography is nothing to rep enraged over, but it’s one doozy of a screenplay.
