A “Who Done It” for the auto industry.![]()
A great film about another sorry episode in the history of America’s automobile and energy industry. Set as a “Who-Done-It”, the film chronicles how short sighted automakers (especially GM) develop great electric cars in response to the California ZEV mandate only to do everything in their power – from suing the state, making ridiculous ads, creating a red-tape filled lease application process – to kill them. Consumers buy bigger and bigger vehicles (whether they need them or not). Government officials and staffers bow to the pressure of intense lobbying, and conflicts of interest. The sad fate of most of the EVs produced during the late ’90s to 2002 is revealed.
GM, especially, comes off as incredibly vindictive. What automaker ever tracked down every car of any model and crushed them (not the Corvair, Edsel, etc.)? Even after loyal drivers pleaded to keep them, offering to buy the last remaining EV1s with junk titles at lease buyout prices, GM went out of its way to ensure that the EV1 was history.
The passion of GM’s EV specialist Chelsea Sexton for the EV1 makes her the star of the movie. One can only imagine what the engineers who designed the EV1 felt when their babies were being crushed.
But the movie ends on a hopeful note. We may never see the EV1 again, but vehicles using electric drive systems, either as full EVs (which are coming from several start-up companies) or plug-in hybrids, must inevitably roam the roads. The upward trend in gasoline prices, the effects of global warming, the inherent efficiency of electric drive trains, the continued improvement of battery technology, and the upcoming reevaluation of the ZEV Mandate guarantee it.
A good look at a good idea.![]()
This documentary provides a fascinating look at how big corporations can get away with murder. The electric cars were quite popular a decade ago but are now non-existent, this explains why. There were less breakdowns in the electric car and of course no gasoline. The result was that GM could not have people driving around in reliable transportation, where would they make money on repairs? The other factor is oil companies, with no legitimate competitor they could do whatever they wanted and have. Strange that the owners (or leasees since they were not for sale) were not allowed to keep their cars after the California law was repealed. Check it out.
WKtEC Kicks GM in the Butt![]()
Well, all you sceptics out there–see it and weep! Yes, there was an incredibly cool, sexy two seater ZEV on the road and no, you didn’t get to drive it…but I did. For three years I had the fun (and so did everybody I gave a ride to). Also, with a Time of Usage meter installed on my house, I charged at night (still do) at a lower rate–PLUS, get this, I have a 16 panel solar array on my roof which not only lowers my bill, but means my (gasp!) Toyota RAV4 EV license IM SOLAR is not lying. Clean, clean, clean! See this movie and get those auto makers to give you some more options! Way to go, Chris Paine et al.

The usual Rollin problems…![]()
…which are: The subject matter would usually lend for a visual feast. However Jean Rollin manages to be an ultimate bore when it comes down to the cinematography in this production. When we all know from “Rape of the Vampire” and “Fascination” that compelling visuals can be his strength. The lighting is flat, compositions plain.
The editing is sloooooow. Do we really need to see a guy walk across a field until he disappears into the horizon? In an end sequence maybe, however not in the middle of a story that already tends to induce sleep.
My favorite: the girl that shoots herself in front of an audience. No gun smoke, no jerky body movement, no blood.
The acting is as usual questionable however this is most likely not a priority when watching a Rollin film. The majority of costumes look homemade. Or completely pretentious.
Bummer.

Good Movies and case![]()
I have always been a huge Crocodile Dundee fan. This DVD set was just the ticket. They were all good quality, and I was especially impressed with the case. Most DVD sets come with each DVD being individually cased. This set came with just one normal size case, but it was able to accommodate all three DVD and I was able to fit it in my DVD rack. A real room saver. The delivery time was good as well.
A Must for any Crocodile Dundee Fan![]()
If you love the character, or got a thing for Paul Hogan (as my gf does), you need this boxset. I grew up watching this movie so it holds a special place in my heart. Great comedy contrasts with fun, family feel. The sequels were OK (very few trilogies get the third one right), but frankly, this isn’t going to win an oscar. It’s all about the absurdity of Dundee’s antics and Hogan is on point throughout.
not a bad bundle![]()
I hadn’t seen the third one. It was pretty bad as I guessed it would be. Fortunately the first 2 still hold up to the memories I had of them.

African or European?![]()
I’ve been trying to determine which 2-disc versions are in the box for a couple of weeks now, finally found some info elsewhere on the web:
Six-disc set includes “Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Special Edition),” “Monty Python’s Life of Brian (The Immaculate Edition),” and “Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life (Special Edition).”
I was hesitant to order it until I knew what I’d be getting, and then figured I’d post this, as I may not be the only person wondering.
Now where did I leave that shopping cart?
We demand…A great package!![]()
This is a great bargain. $30 for three of the best Monty Python features. With hours of special features there’s something here for both the hardcore Monty fan and the Python Noob.
What is there to say? It’s PYTHON.![]()
One of the most viciously funny, sharply satirical, intellectually hilarious on ALL levels comedies ever made. What’s beautiful about this movie is that it’s just flat-out hilarious to folks who dont have a sense of the historical context of the movie, but also the more do you know about it, the funnier this movie is.
I still lose my breath laughing even though I’ve seen this movie hundreds of times since it first came out to (ranting and) raving reviews by the curious sect of eternally infuriated Christians with no sense of humour, who only served to provide a ton of free publicity for the film while it was still in theaters.
This is a Python classic every fan – of either Python or just laughing in general – should own.
