This was one of those books that I knew was going to upset me but I had to read it. Ms. Wolf makes a strong case that we are at the brink of losing our democracy; it is justifiable to compare the unique neo-conservative movement in America to past repressive regimes. Some of her points:

Black Water, the vigilante group with billions of dollars in their war chest has the ability to seize down third world governments and yet owes no allegiance to our constitution.

Countless laws have been broken by our White House and yet no one is held accountable (illegal wire tapping of Americans; misleading Americans into the Iraqi war; torture; outing a CIA agent for political gain; etc.)

Corporations controlling all our media and therefore the scuttle of information “We The People” receive.

The tampering of our free elections (voter machine fraud, the Supreme Court illegally over riding our democracy and appointing George Bush President; the selective removal of Americans from voting lists; etc.)

Ms. Wolf’s point is that these attacks are done boldly and deliberatly to frighten and intimidate Americans into doing nothing.

I found this book to be most frightening because most Americans aren’t even aware that there is a jam. There is a deliberate travel in this country to wipe out middle class America (unaffordable educatuion, the extinguish of pensions, the attempt of President Bush to convince Americans that Social Security is bad; unaffordable health insurance, etc.) I hope this DVD release acts as a wake up call to all Americans.

I disfavor the Bush administration as powerful as anyone, thank god he’s outta there, but this film is objective design too biased. I had a feeling that the author was cherry picking events and give it her believe interpretation that supports a vastly biased agenda, she’s clear to paint the Bush administration as sinister as Hitler’s Nazis reign. While I do contemplate that it was a uninteresting, insensitive administration and had a outrageous reach to how it would govern this country and poorly weaved its representation to the rest of the world, I don’t judge they were as wicked as the film portrayed them to be. It was stretching it a bit too far, and that downplayed its credibility a bit for me. Even though I wanted to like it, my skepticism changed only a runt by the time the movie was over.

However, there were helpful moments in the film though, and I found myself nodding along side it at clear parts. I wouldn’t say that this is a “must-see”, but it’s definitely more thought-provoking and racy than your average small-town theater flick.

Not positive why all the attention was on Blackwater while Dick Cheney’s Halliburton got off scotch-free, and it was impartial as shady as Blackwater, if not more.

I’ll be pretty first. I don’t always like Michael Moore. While some of Lifeless White Men made me laugh, other parts were offensive to me, particularly a chapter devoted to his beget foriegn policy “ideas.” His next film is going to be called Farenheit 911, and he’s said that he’s certain to release it in October 2004, legal before the election. I’m not a fan of Bush, but I distress it may be hard to sit through a movie that was created entirely to slander someone.

That’s why I like Bowling for Columbine, because I sense impartial intentions slow it. Moore comes from Flint, Michigan, a set where a runt girl was shot by her classmate shortly before Bowling for Columbine was shot. He’s dismal to peer these happening to our nation’s children, and he wants to know why. The most well-known portion of this film, at least in my conception, is how it systematically refutes “explanations” for gun violence.

-Charlton Heston blames it on a “mixed ethnicity,” but Moore claims Canada had an even bigger mix, complete with a lower crime rate.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Bowling for Columbine! Click Here

-Violent video games? Japan has worthy more violent games than we do, and their homicide rate is powerful lower as well.

-Violent history? Germany was once home to the Nazi party, and they have a lower rate than us.

One possibility he raises that I always found very reasonable was the description of gargantuan high school prssure that was discussed in his interview with Matt Stone. Kids are cruel to each other growing up, and I believe the reason those Columbine kids snapped was because of years and years of teasing by their classmates.

Conservatives seem very intimidated by Bowling for Columbine, I’m not obvious why. It doesn’t seem so uncertain to me. Do you mediate that a movie would be enough to ever change the policy of the president? Anyone who heard the “with us or with the terrorists” speech should know the retort to that. But then again, some of these people who flip out over the Dixie Chicks or Tim Robbins stating their opinions never seem to be able to recall that these isolated incidents of free speech are magnificent harmless.

Moore is often called an Anti-American, which is a term I assume is overused and rarely appropriate. Osama Bin Laden is an Anti-American. Moore would not like to explore American destroyed, he would like to be a position with less violent deaths and discontent citizens. Moore doesn’t disfavor America, he loves America. The free speech he’s grown up with has given him the opportunity to write his books and create his movies. He is certainly anti-Bush, but why should that compose someone anti-American? I’m distinct plenty of conservatives were anti-Clinton or anti-Carter of anti-Kennedy, but I would never call them anti-Americans. Our exact enemies are people who would ruin crowded buildings in NYC, not people who voted for Gore.

Yet, despite all this, the attacks on Moore’s film are often totally vicious and off-base. A disturbing number of the reviews on this place, and many others, attack his weight more often than they attack the film. Yes, Moore is burly but so is Hurry Limbaugh for God’s sake.

Now, as for the allegations that Moore has fabricated some of the events in this film, I’m not obvious exactly how to address all of them. Did he occupy Charlton Heston’s “From my cool plain hands” speech totally out of context? Yes, he might have. But the thing is, this happens ALL THE TIME. Doesn’t fabricate it just, but it does happen. The Dixie Chicks said they were ashamed Bush was from Texas, you hardly ever read about the apology they issued shortly afterward. Critics of Bowling for Columbine only cite parts of it to try and dismiss the whole movie as meritless, and that’s the same thing. And also, do these people really contemplate that Hurry Limbaugh and people over at Fox News always exhibit distinct and glorious arguments about their politics? I don’t reflect so.

Bowling for Columbine may not be entirely lawful, and it’s advisable for a viewer to hold an start mind and swallow everything so easily. But it is a brilliantly constructed polemic, lively to gaze and certainly relevant. No matter what your politics, you’ll mediate on the issues raised here after seeing the movie, and that’s admirable in itself.

Bowling for Columbine is a movie, and like all art it is certainly subjective. Those out there who are fearful of the left soar having a chance to whisper out? Don’t be. The war in Iraq calm happened despite vocal objections from many Americans, so what do you have to pain about? People (and don’t call us anti-Americans) who are disillusioned with the plot of the country, disillusioned by the constant violence going on here, disillusioned by lies and the manipulation of media, may accumulate some brief solace in a movie like this. Is that so deplorable? I reflect this is Michael Moore’s best work, because it concerns all of us. I can give this film nothing less than my highest recommendation.

I have taken 4 friends to seek this movie. I have even seen this movie while I was in Montreal to perceive what the Canadian reaction would be. I must say, I was embarrassed to be an American after watching this movie. I then view of all the things I should be doing to acquire this area a better space to live. In other words, this is a view provoking movie that is truly keen.

You will seek Charles Heston wring his hands in nervousness after he says, “We don’t want any more of that civil rights business going on again”, or “the reason America is violent is because of all the mixed ethnicities.” What an idiot.

And that is objective what Michael Moore does, he shows people and the government in their natural element speaking freely, and shows us how insane they are and sound. From George Bush proclaiming that our number one priority should be defense spending when people all over the country are out of work and children are living in poverty without parent supervision, to the crackpot rednecks who are buying more “guns and ammo” because they want to protect themselves from the “bad doers.” It’s this candid honesty of Moore’s subjects that makes us observe inward to how this country gone astray. Then Moore tries to interpret this with his astounding short animation movie “A Brief History of the United States of America.” Although he simplifies everything, and it is truly brief, it hits home and is certainly explore opening.

Moore tries to interpret the put a question to of why America is so violent. Why we are the new country in the world that kills people with guns on the spacious level that the United States does. He offers a lot of options to this respond, but ultimately, he leaves the query begin for the viewer to search out within him/herself for the reply and fabricate change.

A truly big achievement and I can’t wait till his next film that is due out 2 months before the election that will no doubt, originate up people’s eyes to the infamous and blood thirsty administration that occupies the White House.

Bravo Mr. Moore! Bravo!

Three grand short films from Japan based on the favorite series near together in edited originate to gain 90 minutes of entertainment. And having Kari, one of the characters, narate the legend gives the appearance of one narrative, which adds to the strength of this movie

The first movie is approximately 10-15 minutes long and details what happened four years before the first season of the explain. Tai and his sister Kari peep a digi egg exit from their computer hide and a microscopic Digimon is born. Kari becomes attached to this creature. Eventually, the Digimon digivolves to Greymon and protects the city from Parrotmon.

The first movie has it’s moment. Young Kari is adorable and even in young Tai we already originate to gape Tai the leader of the Digidestined that we search for in the first season of Digimon. The friendship between Kari and Agumon also adds a touching element to the chronicle. It’s almost heartbreaking when, after the Digimon disappears, Kari yells out, “Don’t you wanna play with me anymore? “

We quickly forward four years later. The second movie takes site after the first season of the demonstrate. It’s unclear exactly when. Izzy, one of the Digidestined, joins with Tai to try and defeat this queer Digimon who is invading the internet. With the succor of their Digimon, Agumon and Tentomon, they try to battle this peculiar Digimon. But this Digimon keeps digivolving at an accelerated rate. So Izzy contacts the other Digidestined and manages to net Matt and TK to encourage along with their Digimon…Patamon and Gabumon. Agumon and Gabumon are able to digivolve to their Mega level…and eventually join together and defeat this nasty Digimon….or so they contemplate…

The second movie has a lot of action…but every few minutes, the action goes down a bit so we can have some humor. The main subplot of the second movie involves a humorous argument between Tai and Sora. Tai tried to give Sora a hair clip for her birthday and Sora thinks this is Tai’s blueprint of criticizing her hairstyle. icon smile Stream Digimon The Movie Online Women! They always have to analyze everything. Anyway…the battles are intense and the music honest enormous. Many songs from the tv present are played during the battle and you can’t aid but mumble along…if you like the music, of course.

The third movie takes set four years later…Sometime during the second season. (Actually, the second season level-headed hasn’t reached the point at which this allotment of this movie is place. This is clearly seen because in the reveal, Patamon and Gatomon don’t have the ability to warp digivolve yet, an ability they clearly have in this movie.) Anyway…in this allotment of the movie, we learn that the imperfect Digimon four years ago was created by Willis and is actually a computer virus. And it wasn’t really defeated. It somehow escaped into the loyal world and has infected one of Willis’ digimon. Willis is also a Digidestined and has twin digimon. Anyway…for the past four years, one of Willis’s Digimon was infected with the virus and making Willis’ life glum. But with the wait on of Davis and the other Digidestined, they manage to defeat the virus again and free Cocomon from the virus’ control.

The third movie, while not as charming as the first two, has some moments. Humor is one of it’s strenght. The place is a bit vague…but it doesn’t afflict the movie in general.

So, if you are a fan of the expose, you will not be dissappointed by this movie.

Digimon: The Movie is a segment of three movies, all relased seperately in Japan. In movie 1, before season one (the unique airings on telivision), Tai (Taichi) and Kari (Hikari), two special characters, meet Koromon at ages 7 and 4. Tai is 7, Kari is 4. They meet a special Digimon who turns out to be Tai’s partner in season 1. This movie was short and to me, blooming un-interesting, but I loved it anyhow!

Movie 2, aka Allotment 2, takes set after season 1. Izzy (Koushiro) discovers a DigiEgg on the computer. It hatches in to a baby digimon, and begins to eat up data on the internet. Soon, people from all over the world are watching the battle between Diaboromon (strongest level of digimon) on their computers. Even Yolei (Miyako) from season 2 at a young age appears, sending e-mails along with other kids to Tai, Izzy, Matt (Yamato), and T.K. (Takeru) . Eventually, they beat Diaboromon.

Movie 3 takes area during season 2. Davis (Daisuke), Yolei, Cody (Iori), T.K. and Kari are hanging out at a beach. Davis, Yolei, and Cody are all unique Digidestined, mind you. They meet Willis and his Digimon Terriermon. He had twin Digimon, Terriermon and Lopmon, but Lopmon ran away and grew up confused and improper. Now Lopmon, aka “Endigomon”, tells Willis to “go abet”, as Willis comes from Colorado. WIllis created Diaboromon when he wanted three Digimon instead of two. But, when he made Diaboromon, a virus infected him and so started movie 2. But, they carve out HALF OF THIS MOVIE in the American version. Endigomon originally captures the broken-down Digidestined in order to acquire Willis. THEY Nick THIS OUT! HALF OF THE MOVIE! But, it was so frigid, my grandparents even liked it! “Kids in America” by Len is playing during the credits. PRODIGIOUS MOVIE! I also have a movie clip of the nick scenes in Japanese. What’s this? A fresh “Nightmare Before Christmas” DVD package? Actually there are three versions: this two-disc location that includes a downloadable digital copy, a Blu-ray version, and a collector’s edition that comes with a bust of Jack Skellington with a detachable Sandy Claus beard and hat.

Though this version is billed as a two-disc site, it actually has three discs. The third one contains the digital copy. An instruction sheet spells out in positive steps how to download the file to an iPod or similar contrivance.

The movie itself is a feast for the eyes, ears and imagination. A delicious witches’ brew of stop-motion animation, catchy display tunes and a seriously warped creative license, it always stays fair to its timeless message: to be cheerful, be yourself. Devilishly nonconformist, it’s an enduring holiday musical for the whole Addams family.

Well, almost. Though all of its apprehension gags are played entirely for laughs, some of the imagery is downright creepy, especially for minute children. Anyone older than say, 6, however, should relish every miniature. Teenagers will treasure it.

The record — the citizens of Halloweentown attempt to annex neighboring Christmastown — comes from the macabre mind of producer Tim Burton, who wrote it in his spare time (as a poem!) while working as a Disney animator in the 1980s. The movie blends the tastiest bits of Burton’s earlier Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands with a sprinkling of the stop-motion magic first found in Disney’s 1961 Babes in Toyland.

The imaginative cast of characters includes:

* Pumpkin King Jack Skellington (Chris Sarandon), a playful misfit who believes his purpose in life is to merge the holidays of Halloween and Christmas.

* Jack’s faithful dog Zero, a ghost with a elegant, jack-o’-lantern nose who, like the hound in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, eventually pulls a sleigh

* Rag-doll heroine Sally (voiced by Catherine O’Hara), Jack’s worship interest, who sews herself abet together when she loses a body part

* Oogie Boogie (Broadway weak Ken Page), a slimy, singing bag of bugs who channels the cartoon version of Cab Calloway in the frail Betty Boop cartoons

* Lock (Paul “Pee-Wee Herman” Reubens), Shock (O’Hara) and Barrel (Danny Elfman, the film’s composer), a trio of immoral trick-or-treaters who “kidnap the Sandy Claws”

* Wheelchair-bound scandalous scientist Dr. Finklestein (William Hickey), a duckbilled quack whose flip-top head lets him scratch his brains for inspiration

* A mayor (Glenn Shadix, the interior director Otho in Beetlejuice) who is literally two-faced.

Blessed with the ability to bring adult minds attend to child’s level, Burton dwells in unlit mischief. In fact, some of Nightmare’s best scenes include the kidnapping of Santa Claus and Jack’s hilarious attempt to replace him on Christmas Eve, when the skeleton gleefully delivers presents such as tree-devouring snakes and severed, shrunken heads.

Director Henry Selick painstakingly created the film over three years. Though he had a production crew of over 100, each dinky of footage took a week, as each second required 24 ever-so-slightly different shots.

BONUS FEATURES

This 2-disc DVD package has a nice collection of extras:

* An audio commentary with Burton, Selick and Elfman.

* A downloadable digital copy of the film, which you can transfer to an iPod or similar procedure.

* Burton’s first short, 1982′s 6-minute “Vincent,” a black-and-white stop-action film about a boy who dreams of being Vincent Tag, who narrates.

* Burton’s 1994 Disney live-action short “Frankenweenie.” This 30-minute black-and-white film re-imagines the Frankenstein sage as the chronicle of a young boy and his car-struck pet dog in suburban America. A recently taped introduction by Burton shows some working sketches being weak for his full-length version now in development.

* A reading of Burton’s fresh “Nightmare Before Christmas” poem by actor Christopher Lee

* A promotional film for the annual “Nightmare” makeover of Disneyland’s Stupefied Mansion.

* Promotional and making-of featurettes, a storyboard to film comparison, deleted scenes and theatrical trailers and posters

If you deem the best movies are the ones that exhibit you a world you’ve never envisioned before, then you will Cherish Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. A benchmark in stop-motion animation, this incredibly difficult-to-make film (24 individually posed frames were needed to execute ONE SECONDS’s worth of action) is a masterpiece of art direction, space effect, and kindly feeble storytelling. The dwelling revolves around Jack, the Pumpkin King of Halloween, and his attempt to race Christmas in space of Santa Claus. “Sleigh” becomes confused with “destroy”; “stockings” become “stalkings”; and spirits go from joyous to ghostly as the two holidays clash together like oil and water, or fire and ice. One of the expansive surprises of the movie is that although it dances around material that could easily careen into cynicism, it remains refreshingly sweet and light throughout. Which is not to say that some of the comedy isn’t a puny sunless and perhaps geared more towards older children and adults; for example, the brief scene in which a python puppet is shown swallowing a Christmas tree whole is hysterically humorous, but not especially appropriate for the very young.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Nightmare Before Christmas! Click Here

The special edition DVD is unquestionably the version of this classic to purchase. Included are a wealth of extras: the teaser and theatrical trailers; a documentary on “The Making of …”; deleted scenes and storyboards, etc, etc. The best bonuses are two short films by Burton: “Vincent”, a poetic tribute to the pleasing Vincent Heed, narrated by the subject himself; and “Frankenweenie”, a canine send-up of “Frankenstein”, starring Shelley Duvall, Daniel Stern, and a cast of talented character actors. This DVD is one that you can exercise HOURS exploring happily! Highly recommended as both a Halloween and Christmas treat.

A “Who Done It” for the auto industry.star50 tpng Who Killed the Electric Car? Discount.
A great film about another sorry episode in the history of America’s automobile and energy industry. Set as a “Who-Done-It”, the film chronicles how short sighted automakers (especially GM) develop great electric cars in response to the California ZEV mandate only to do everything in their power – from suing the state, making ridiculous ads, creating a red-tape filled lease application process – to kill them. Consumers buy bigger and bigger vehicles (whether they need them or not). Government officials and staffers bow to the pressure of intense lobbying, and conflicts of interest. The sad fate of most of the EVs produced during the late ’90s to 2002 is revealed.

GM, especially, comes off as incredibly vindictive. What automaker ever tracked down every car of any model and crushed them (not the Corvair, Edsel, etc.)? Even after loyal drivers pleaded to keep them, offering to buy the last remaining EV1s with junk titles at lease buyout prices, GM went out of its way to ensure that the EV1 was history.

The passion of GM’s EV specialist Chelsea Sexton for the EV1 makes her the star of the movie. One can only imagine what the engineers who designed the EV1 felt when their babies were being crushed.

But the movie ends on a hopeful note. We may never see the EV1 again, but vehicles using electric drive systems, either as full EVs (which are coming from several start-up companies) or plug-in hybrids, must inevitably roam the roads. The upward trend in gasoline prices, the effects of global warming, the inherent efficiency of electric drive trains, the continued improvement of battery technology, and the upcoming reevaluation of the ZEV Mandate guarantee it.

A good look at a good idea.star50 tpng Who Killed the Electric Car? Discount.
This documentary provides a fascinating look at how big corporations can get away with murder. The electric cars were quite popular a decade ago but are now non-existent, this explains why. There were less breakdowns in the electric car and of course no gasoline. The result was that GM could not have people driving around in reliable transportation, where would they make money on repairs? The other factor is oil companies, with no legitimate competitor they could do whatever they wanted and have. Strange that the owners (or leasees since they were not for sale) were not allowed to keep their cars after the California law was repealed. Check it out.

This is, in fact, Bertolucci’s novel prick of 315 (!) minutes. Having seen both the 255 limited version and the director’s prick, one may actually say what kind of incompatibility can there possibly be between these 2 versions? One is 4 1/4 hours, the other is 5 1/4 hours. They are both incredibly long versions, so what’s the point? The point is that there is a broad inequity. As astonishing as it may sound, the shorter version seems longer, as it doesn’t have the same fable prance as the longer version does. There are subtle differences between the versions that beget positive scenes different. For example, there is a scene where the leaders of the town go duck hunting (warning! Bertolucci shows the precise killing of ducks here, along with animals being slaughtered for food) . They then go into a church to discuss bringing a fresh fascist order to the town. In the short version, the church scene only consists of the men talking. In the longer version, Bertolucci intercuts the stupid ducks with the men talking, giving the scene a graver execute. The sex scenes are longer and more explicit in the longer version as well. I saw this long version at a Bertolucci retrospective, and there were college kids in the audience who were laughing at the sex scenes! The sex scenes, like in all of Bertolucci’s work, are meant to be serious and natural, which they are. I verbalize the young people of America have a difficult time taking sex seriously after a decade or so of lowbrow, childish, teenage “comedies”. Some of the graceful camera work got lost in the shorter version, because Bertolucci slash some of the beginnings and ends of scenes, where they would be a extraordinary camera recede opening or closing the scene. As for the film itself, it is incredibly ambitious and fantastic to eye. Bertolucci unbiased came off the amazingly successful Last Tango in Paris, and did something grandly ambitious. He should be commended for that. Many original day filmmakers would probably do a sequel to their already successful film to acquire their pockets, and not give a hoot about anything else. Bertolucci originally wanted to release it in 2 parts, but the producer Alberto Grimaldi, who was reeling from the financial failure of Fellini’s Cassanova (a film he produced), wanted no portion of a 2 portion film. So Bertolucci compromised. He only lop one entire scene. He made cuts within scenes (a technique that Terry Gilliam worn on his film Brazil, when he had to dapper his film from 142 minutes to 131) . While this film is gorgeous, it took a ton out of Bertolucci. He never worked with Grimaldi again (Grimaldi had produced Last Tango in addition to this film), and he didn’t really recover his reputation as a titanic filmmaker until 10 years later with another myth, The Last Emperor. Since then, he’s been erratic, but he can collected originate stout cinema (glance The Dreamers, one of Bertolucci’s best films) . Since this is in fact the director’s crop, by all means glimpse it, rent it, catch it.

This is arguably one of the finest, most ambitious, and new sage films ever made. When it was made in 1977, it was met with derision, confusement, and indifference. Many people are now able to belief this film, and indulge in it for the masterpiece that it is.

Let me explain the request of the different versions of this masterpiece.

The first slice (never released) was 6:15. The European released version was 5:25. In the meanwhile, Alberto Grimaldi (the film’s producer) was negociating with Paramount a 3:15 version, betraying Bertolucci, who didn’t know a word about.

After the European succes, Fox offered Bertolucci to work on a 4:15 version for the U.S. market. He popular, and made a second 4:40 version. But Grimaldi’s opposition steal the case to a court. A think viewed all three 5:25, 4:40 and 3:15 versions. He concluded that Grimaldi’s short version was detrimental and incoherent. So he invited Bertolucci to work in a 4:15 version.

Bernardo did a third chop to 4:10, that had its premiere in the Unique York Film Festival. There, critics were very negative, since they already knew the european 5:25 version, and compared so. But Bertolucci once declared that this was simply another film; no a single sequence was missing, it impartial had another race. For a given moment, he even prefered this version. But years later, he recognizes the short version lacks the “inexorable passing of time” of the burly one.
Let me buy this is the only film in history that has keep toghether -for the production- all three major studios then, Fox, United Artists and Paramount.
All this information was taken from the book Bertolucci por Bertolucci, the spanish version of Scene madri di Bernardo Bertolucci, from Enzo Ungari, based on the interviews by Donald Ranvaud about The Last Emperor.
I definitely agree with the people asking for a remastering and release on DVD of the 5:25 unusual version.

This is a incredible stare at Jewish immigrant life in the 1880′s in Novel York’s Lower East Side. Carol Kane is terrific as Gitl, who comes over with her young son from a Russian shtetl to join her husband, Jake (Steven Keats) who immigrated five years earlier. He’s become “Americanized” and she clings to the venerable ways. Jake has a job, has slash his hair and shaves, likes to dance and play around with the girls. Hester Street is a very humane, warm movie. There are no dramatic climaxes or screaming arguments. Carol Kane plays Gitl as a troubled, gentle young woman who wants to please her husband but feels deeply about the religious customs she grew up with. She’s advantageous, with her pale, graceful face and those mammoth, sad eyes. And Jake is no one-dimensional philanderer. He truly is puzzled over his wife’s inability to embrace the freedoms and excitement of their recent life. While he stays magnificent noteworthy the same, Gitl slowly changes, becoming stronger and more confident. The movie closes with Jake paying Gitle for a divorce so that he can marry Mamie and they’ll originate a dance studio. And Gitl and Mr. Bernstein will marry and they’ll commence a diminutive shop. Selling what? They’re not obvious, but Gitl will sell so that her Mr. Bernstein can perceive.

The movie evolks with large warmth the life of Hester Street, where so distinguished of people’s lives were lived on the sidewalks and curbs. One long sequence, with only background music and street sounds, has Jake and his young son, Yossele, whom Jake has renamed Joey, leaving their apartment and walking hand in hand up Hester Street. The street is filled with people and shops, horse carts, shopping stalls. Kids are playing, couples walking around, men sitting on steps and talking. Everything is being sold, chickens, shoes, potatoes, dresses, apples, lotions, sweets, you name it. Romanticised? Undoubtedly. Highly effective? It distinct was.

But they have a boarder in their shrimp apartment–a old Jewish man whose dedication to Talmudic perceive draws the wife’s interest as her marriage crumbles. The film vividly portrays the sense of the teeming slums and tenements of the time, the problems of the dislocated immigrants struggling to support their culture while adapting to a modern one. It is both an engrossing narrative of personal triumph–Carol Kane is a winning heroine–and an racy historical period. I saw this when it originally aired on PBS and it made me both excited and unlit. Indignant that a spacious BILLION dollar company cannot afford to give their employees affordable healthcare, place some AMERICAN companies out of business(Rubbermaid) because of their greedy buying tactics and overall have shady business practices. Dark because they have been getting away with this irresponsible behaviour for far to long. People are beginning to wake up and realise how great pain this company is really causing America. If you need to gather out information for yourself please choose this film. You will skedaddle away from it never wanting to shop at Walmart ever again.

This is another superbly done documentary from the award winning PBS investigative journalism series Frontline (Peabody Award, Emmy and many more!) . Disregard what one reviewer said about this being pro-Walmart propaganda paid for by the corporation. He’s obviously smoking something, because this is made and hosted by Hedrick Smith, a PULITZER prize winning journalist who faded to write for the NY Times. He is one of America’s most respected journalists. I started watching the prove since I was in high school (I’m now tedious 20′s) and their shows are exceptionally high quality. Now, if Frontline is interviewing people who lost jobs and showing Rubbermaid factory equipment being auctioned off because they got assign out of business by Walmart, how is this pro-Walmart?

The sage starts in America and its impact on the US economy. He interviews some professors, economists, managers, suppliers, and executives. Then the record moves to China and HK, and then aid to the US. There are some very certain insights from nmost of the people interviewed especially from one professor who talks about the shift in American culture and business history.

Is Walmart gracious for America? I can’t acknowledge that and neither can Frontline. This documentary does an genuine job presenting facts without judgement and presents both sides and the complex shades in the middle. It asks some idea provoking questions. The US trade deficit is getting worse every day. Quality is going up (some “Made in China” stuff is now very favorable and getting exponentially better every year), and that’s really scary for us in America. Who’s the blame? Well, all of us. We’re not competing well in the global economy, and we want the cheapest goods. We’re not willing to set aside our money where our mouth is.

If you’re involved in economics, history, social issues, this is a must glimpse. If you care about the American economy, and global events, you should view this documentary. It’s loads better than the “Walmart, the High Cost of Grievous Prices” film (which is very one sided and not nearly as well done) . oh,.. and inaugurate learning Chinese!

In 2004, the Student Body Council at Utah Valley Status College (UVSC) decided to invite Michael Moore to their campus to scream. It was, after all, an election year, and in opinion of the recently released film “Fahrenheit 9/11″ Moore seemed to be an appropriate and timely choice. Moore’s $40,000 speaker’s fee would be easily offset by price sales. Simple, upright? … Well, judge again. Moore’s invitation to direct at UVSC sparked an incredibly repugnant chain of events chronicled by the perceptive see of first time filmmaker, Steven Greenstreet.

Greenstreet recorded events as the set at UVSC became horrible. Student petitions circulated, demonstrations took station, and local Mormon, Kay Anderson, pulled out all the stops to execute his goal of canceling Moore’s engagement. Anderson felt that Moore did not narrate the values of his community, and he was proper about that. In a situation where the population is 75% Mormon, and Republicans outnumber Democrats at the rate of 12:1, Moore’s opinions don’t exactly mesh with the majority. Few people, however will go quite as far as Anderson–offering a $25,000 cheque to execute Moore and eventually sinking to suing the Student Body.

Conservative talk point to host Sean Hannity is invited to UVSC in an attempt to benefit ‘balance’ the space. Hannity’s engagement was supposedly ‘free’, but since he demanded a private jet, his speaking engagement (which was paid for by the college) cost several thousands more than Moore’s–an irony that seems to sprint those who protested the money spent on Michael Moore.

“The Divided Position” is a microcosm for politics in America–and while it’s not quite this unsightly in most towns, America is politically–a divided nation. In Orem, Utah with the imminent visit from Moore, the good divide of politics became uncouth. First Amendment rights were severely threatened when self-appointed Dodge City Marshals of Morality tried to block Moore’s visit unprejudiced because they didn’t like what he had to say. The documentary captures the emotionally charged atmosphere on campus as sides clash. Those who fight for Moore’s presence study it as a battle for First Amendment rights–while those who are opposed to Moore argue that his presence brings “hatred and filth.” As emotions are unleashed and tempers flare, gallant professors try to relate while the crowd heckles and boos, and radio host Sean Hannity humiliates a young man who had the courage to admit he was a liberal–well so considerable for Free Speech. And throughout this entire, gross mess Student Body President Jim Bassi and Vice President Joe Vogel (both ancient Mormon missionaries) valiantly attempt to bear their equilibrium in the volatile area on campus.

“This Divided Residence” is highly intelligent and yet also profoundly disturbing. Watching the events in Orem, Utah is a grand reminder for everyone that we cannot allow others to effect honest judgments about what we can peek, hear, or read, and while a war rages in Iraq to supposedly acquire democracy in that nation, perhaps we should effort a bit more about what’s taking status under our noses. The DVD offers extensive extras–interviews and deleted scenes, “The Resignation”, Kay Anderson ‘uncut’, additional coverage of Michael Moore, a music video, and audio commentary–displacedhuman

In 1844, Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints (LDS) was murdered by religious bigots. His followers moved to Utah, where 75% of the state’s population today subscribes to this view. They are mostly republican, outnumbering democrats or liberals by twelve to one.

The Divided Area brings us to 2004 where two members of the student government at the Utah Valley Area College decided to invite Michael Moore to order on campus before the November presidential election. The fees for Moore’s visit would be $40,000 for which advanced notice sales have already insured a profit. When the invitation was made, the uproar began.

Students opposed to the political views of the controversial filmmaker started drawing petitions to have the invitation rescinded. They never claimed that it was about Moore’s politics, but how the money was spent. They have the relieve of Kay Anderson, a local businessman in the Oram, Utah community. Anderson seems to delight being in the spotlight even as students challenge his opposition, and fetch him repeatedly contradicting himself. (A trailer to this shows the students lampooning him mercilessly, which draws chuckles from the man who gives every appearance of being a self-righteous bigot and hypocritical throwback to the 1950′s) . Students counter Anderson’s argument by asking why it is so principal keeping someone out, which is the same reason the LDS sought refuge by immigrating to Utah.

Conservative students invite ultraconservative Sean Hannity to squawk at the school, days ahead of Moore. He agrees to do it free, objective so long as they pay his expenses and the cost of flying by private jet. Cost: $50,000.

Watching Hannity was perhaps the most difficult viewing of this yarn. His patronization of the crowd and condescension was nauseating. He humiliated a liberal in the audience, and on stage while carefully keeping the microphone from him. He summoned other liberals by calling them, as he would call for a house pet. Moore follows several days later, also to a sell-out crowd, extolling the courage of the student body president, Jim Bassi and Vice President Joe Vogel, who catch themselves in a lawsuit filed for spite by fellow Mormon, Kay Anderson.

This was surprisingly bright and noteworthy. It was monstrous, and disgusting to scrutinize Kay Anderson completely contradict his Christian principles and American ideals, saying the community could ignore the first amendment rights of other Americans by keeping them from speaking in his town or local college. Luminous Hannity’s routine, I have gained a original level of contempt for this conceited prima donna. Yet, it was refreshing to scrutinize college students remain ever mindful of their civic obligation to protect the Constitutional rights of their fellow citizens.

This was a microcosm of division that has permeated across our land, hence the title, “This Divided Station.” Another lesson to be learned from this is that civil rights can always be taken away or challenged by rationalization by anyone in the majority, liberal or conservative, and that tyranny can appear in the invent of self-righteousness, misdirection, and under the camouflage of patriotism.

Comedy from today’s headlinesstar50 tpng War, Inc. Review.
I almost skipped this one as a political annoyance until I saw the star power supporting it: Ben Kingsley, Marisa Tomei (a personal favorite), John Cusack, Joan Cusack, and more. That cast simply won’t let a movie be bad. They couldn’t if they tried.

Despite an apparent attempt to be ordinary entertainment, this one rises above all the usual categories. Do you want a cynical mockumentary of Haliburton-style war profiteering? Got it. Do you want pointed jabs at operations funded by Congress’s “black budget?” Check. Do you want satirical assaults on simplistic sloganeering from every possible direction? It’s there. Add in a babe like a pre-meltdown Britney but with hotter hotpants and a bucket of slapstick, and you’re headed in the right direction. For example, a major character’s name is “Uckmee Fay.” Speakers of pig-Latin, please take note.

They set the tone from the very first scene. Chevy Chase delivers a “Mission Impossible” style of assignment to a high-class assassin, via video, while seated on American Standard’s finest. Later, Joan Cusack shows up in the role that she has perfected – the prim, cheery, and murderous psychopath. There’s a lot more, too. I laughed all through, even (maybe especially) when I knew that outrage would have been the “appropriate” response.

This one really grows on me the more I think about it. It doesn’t whap you upside the head with humor, politics, or even its sappy moments. Instead, it tickles you with not-quite-too-much of social commentary, current events, goofy jokes, visual gags, and enough more to hold it all together. I liked it more a few hours later than when I walked out the door, and lots of movies have the opposite effect on me.

– wiredweird, reviewing the theatrical release

PS: See it some time soon. The topical humor in this one might age badly unless the The Powers That Be keep providing background to preserve its freshness.

War Inc is a must see…star50 tpng War, Inc. Review.
War Inc has an all star cast that includes John Cusack as Hauser a troubled assassin who has accepted a job of bumping off the figure head of a rival nation. To do this he must pose as a trade show coordinator hosting a Tamerlane Brand USA Expo in recently “liberated” country Turaqistan. On top of all this and with the help of his assistant (Joan Cusack) he has to juggle a headstrong reporter (Marisa Tomei) and the impending wedding of pop superstar Yonika BabyYea (Hilary Duff). War Inc is a film that will entertain a number of different audiences. On the surface the film plays much like a guy with girl troubles film but its the underlying theme that really makes it shine. Writers Mark Leyner, Jeremy Pikser and John Cusack weave a story that draws many parallels between what is happening on screen and in America today. One could easily view these larger than life characters as allegorical representations of the American Public, Capitalism, Big Business, Government, The Media…and so on. There is of course a good bit of the absurd, including but not limited to: fighting, licking and hotsauce drinking. Overall this film is ahead of its time for its candid statements about the geo political climate and its fun enough that you can still eat popcorn too. I hope you enjoy!

A very important moviestar50 tpng War, Inc. Review.
I’ve seen this when released and I would disagree with many of the reviewers who complain of the “disjointed” script. This movie is not confusing. It is extremely fast paced and can be watched several times to get all the jokes. The special effects are brutally effective and the underlying message very disturbing. The dark humor is right on, especially the bit where the Cusack’s only friend is his Northstar roadside assistance system. The only complaint of the movie is how they fit Hillary Duff into the movie. It’s a bit corny, but hey, it’s Hollywood.
