Sasha Baron Cohen’s latest creation, Bruno, makes his procedure to America to become uber-famous any device he can. And he goes through lots of different attempts on his blueprint. Acting, interviewing celebrities, guesting on talk shows, becoming straight, he tries many methods, each with it’s painfully comical result. You’ll savor the Paula Abdul interview, particularly.
The interactions with people are improbable, and you will be appalled at what some parents will do to score their children into present business. Honest heavenly.

There are a lot of shocking/uncomfortable droll moments (be prepared for gratuitous male nudity), and I am no definite how they will believe up for repeated viewings, but in a crowded theater, it was a bellow. The ending is worth the buildup, and stick around for the closing song.
I laughed so hard that my face was hurting, and my wife was crying from laughing so hard. It takes a while to recover, but soooooo worth it!
NOT for the kids.
I have to peer Bruno more than once, most people probably do too. That’s because Bruno is one of those rare movies where you’re laughing so hard at some parts you know you’re missing the next humorous thing. As overjoyed, Austrian fashionista and celebrity-wannabe Bruno, Baron Cohen continues his jaw-droppingly crass and gross stealth comedy antics. Purportedly, Baron Cohen has been beaten up while in character, so it only seems glorious that he makes his audience laugh hard enough to distress.
Of course the usual Baron Cohen caveat is in order: yes, its offensive, yes, its cross, yes, there is a LOT of nudity, mostly male. If any of this is not your cup of tea, that’s dandy, no hard feelings. If you don’t mind the occasional gawk of literally bouncing balls in the name of comedy, Bruno is pure gold.
Post Borat fame has probably necessitated that more of this movie be staged, with at least some of the people (a talk prove host, the driver of an oncoming car) in on the joke. But scripted or natural- its wickedly silly. And enough of it is genuine- including Bruno’s interview/sex tape with Ron Paul, parents of would-be baby stars volunteering their 12-month-olds to play Nazis, ex-gay ministers, straight-rally wrestling audiences and general bystanders to Bruno’s public antics.
Bruno balances the line between social commentary and comedy like a model on a catwalk. As with Borat half the humor comes from people reactings (or not) to the character’s scandalous behavior, and half from the eerily righteous caricature Baron Cohen creates. Fame-hound Bruno is everything narcissitic, uninformed, vain and with the all-too-common undeserved sense of entitlement that makes up the worst of American pop culture. As with Borat, Bruno learns some life-lessons and grows as a person by the slay of the movie- as Baron Cohen always seems to want to better his audience, even if he has to beat them over the head with a dildo to do it.

Pay no mind to the countless comparisons to “Jaws”, “Alien”, and the rest of the monster classics that a quality film like this always draws. This one stands on its gain as an novel mix of harsh political commentary, family drama, dusky comedy, and dismay. The metaphor for the hysteria over the asian SARS epidemic is thick and the accusatory tone towards America’s interventionist ways and the alarmist media’s sensationalism is thicker. But don’t believe this is some heavy-handed self-serving political film that wallows in its enjoy symbolism; this film is about the importance of family pulling together and taking care of each other when noone else will. Oh yes, and there’s a monster in there somewhere too.
I’m going to topple a few minor spoilers now so if you want to go in completely icy and experience the burly thrill I received viewing this movie you might want to go see the film now. Alright, on with the deliver review. Let me set aside it this plot, I got my money’s worth in the first 20 minutes of the film. The sudden appearance of the beast breaks the most entrenched of monster movie standards: the dumb speak. The almost complete lack of buildup paralyzed me as the monster came charging out of the background in its high-velocity and unsettlingly awkward gait with ferocious momentum sending humanity flying left and honest. What follows is one of the greatest rampage sequences ever seen by human eyes. I was absolutely thrilled by it and only the most jaded of film fans could feel otherwise. In fact, aside from a few gaping set holes, my only true complaint about this movie is that it climaxes so soon. That’s not to say the rest of the film isn’t reliable, but it never reaches that fever pitch again.

As the trigger-happy government declares quarantine and almost immediately begins asserting it’s will on the victims -even as they composed mourn their lost family members- the media spreads word of a deadly and highly contagious virus that the creature is carrying (hence, “the host”) . But as the film progresses, we don’t study the evidence of any abnormal sickness, unprejudiced the paranoia of the people in reaction to the media’s hysterics and government’s jumping to conclusions. As our protagonists, the Park family, search for their diminutive girl (Hyun-seo, taken to the monster’s den for later consumption) we approach to explore that when the government is incompetent and overbearing and the general populace is collectively jumpy of the guy standing next to them the only things you can rely on are your have family and what you can gaze and do for yourself.
The ne’er-do-well Park family consists of Hyun-seo’s father, a slow-witted narcoleptic, her aunt who’s a professional archer with a tendency to freeze under pressure, a college-educated alcoholic of an uncle with a hot temper who can’t procure a job, and a caring grandfather who holds them all together. The dysfunction of the family is silly to witness, but the devotion they all portion in the search for their petite girl is touching; and that’s the valid heart and soul of this film. The monster is menacing, the government is gross, the Americans are comically over-the-top self-serving jerks, the populace at great are unnerved for all the wicked reasons, and the right disease is the paranoia spread by the media but the Park family’s struggle is the dependable yarn here and it’s a astronomical one.
Really, do not sight the dubbed version of this movie. If you’re watching that then you are not watching the same movie. I have a feeling that nearly all of the negative reviews are due to the dismal dubbing this film received.

If you’re not willing to peek the subtitled version, then I suggest you avoid the film, because it will be an abominable experience. I objective watched a clip of it on YouTube and I was cringing!
The dubbing is an insult to the modern cast and crew of this film. Please. Please. Please. Do not observe the dubbed version.

Fantastic Movie – Excellently done !!![]()
This movie is truly the best of Tyler Perry’s that I have seen so far. I am not saying that the others were not very good. They were ! But this one with a different story line is precise in acting and deliberate with its message. You laugh and cry at the same time. Your heart is touched with a deep message of hope in mankind revealed through finding peace with God. The entire cast must have been hand-picked after much prayer by Tyler Perry and his group. They blended together with such depth of expression and acting. Must say Tyler Perry is becoming a master with turning his plays into successful movies and as I know he would say ‘all Glory to God !’ Go see this movie if you haven’t and you will understand what I am trying to say !
“Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself” is great!![]()
“Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself” is great! This is how the story goes: When Madea, America’s favorite pistol-packing grandma, catches sixteen-year-old Jennifer and her two younger brothers looting her home, she decides to take matters into her own hands and delivers the young delinquents to the only relative they have: their aunt April. A heavy-drinking nightclub singer who lives off of Raymond, her married boyfriend, April wants nothing to do with the kids. But her attitude begins to change when Sandino, a handsome Mexican immigrant looking for work, moves into April’s basement room. Making amends for his own troubled past, Sandino challenges April to open her heart. And April soon realizes she must make the biggest choice of her life: between her old ways with Raymond and the new possibilities of family, faith… and even true love.
The cast led by Taraji P. Henson (as April) & Tyler Perry (as Madea / Joe) is great! The story and screenplay and directing by Perry (who recently directed “Madea Goes To Jail” (2009, also produced and wrote the story and screenplay), & the upcoming “Why Did I Get Married Too” (2010, also produced and wrote the story and screenplay) is great!
The cinematography by Alexander Gruszynski (who also did the cinematography to “Madea Goes To Jail”) is great! The film editing by Maysie Hoy (who has been doing the film editing to Perry’s films since “Daddy’s Little Girls” (2007, which he also directed, produced and wrote the story and screenplay) is great! The casting by Alpha Tyler (who has been working with Perry since “Meet The Browns” (2008, which he also directed, produced and wrote the story and screenplay) is great! The production design by Ina Mayhew (who has been doing the production design to Perry’s films since “Diary Of A Mad Black Woman” (2005, which he also wrote the story and screenplay and produced) is great! The art direction by Mayne Berke (who also did the production design to “S.W.A.T.” (2003) is great! The costume design by Keith G. Lewis (who has been doing the costume design to Perry’s films since “Diary Of A Mad Black Woman”) is great!
This is another great Tyler Perry film. This is another different film for him. Solid performances all around.

I think every man and woman should see this movie. The actors and actresses were excellent. I have been in this situation myself and finally got out of it. We can always let bad men run our lives but once we wake up and see that we are better off without them we “Can Do Bad All By Ourselves”. I can’t wait until the soundtrack comes out because the music was excellent. Mr. Perry you chose the right people to do the music and I really felt like I was in church with the Reverand. Thank you for being so real.

I was absolutely amazed at the filmmaker for their genius in telling some of stories of the most vital lesbian and ecstatic historical figures with that of recent issues. A truly rich documentary without overloading you with too many facts.
The documentary follows the struggle of Kelli Peterson, the teenager that challenged her high school to register her Pleased Straight Alliance. The film does a fantastic job in comparing her recent struggle with those of the past in lesbian and pleased history.
One of the most distinguished segments in the film is about hte cheerful man who was tedious Martin Luther King’s civil rights demonstrations.
This is a very indispensable film for all persons to behold. Perfect for the classroom and for any other position that will inspire people to be active and become activists!
This film draws from the personal experience of Kelli Peterson’s attempt in 1996 to initiate a high school social club, and the obstacles she and her allies faced as a result. The film is worth seeing for her experience alone. But it is more than your average documentary. By interweaving vignettes of other overjoyed people’s lives and activism, (from Sarah Orne Jewitt to Barbara Gittings), the directors offer the viewer a complex recognize into what it means to be identified by society based on who you admire.

Movie Title: Galerians – Rion Galerians – Rion is available for streaming or downloading. |
Galerians: Rion is the movie adaption of the survival anxiety game Galerians which was released in 2000 by Crave Entertainment. The movie basically expands all of the CG movies which were in the game, and takes all of the parts you would play and translates them into CG. The film clocks in at a short 73 minutes, but packs a ample amount of tale and depth into each and every moment. The action is intense, the music is tall, (both the japanese and original english remix soundtracks have been included), and the CG while impress Shrek quality is smooth proper enough to procure the job done. I highly reccomend this movie to anyone who loves science fiction, and dread.
Galerians: Rion is a CGI movie based on the first Playstation game by the same name. Residence in a dystopian future, the place revolves around a 14-year-old boy named Rion who awakens in a unique hospital and discovers he has psychic powers. Hunted by others with similar abilities he must catch a girl named Lillia and unravel the mystery of what has happened to him.
Although the tale is derivative of many other sci-fi tales (Akira, Total Purchase), it is of particular interest because of its dismal, cyber-punk surroundings. This is an exciting movie that would likely not be made in America. It features young people (teenagers, mostly) being experimented on and addicted to the spend of drugs (the latter being critical to enhance the psychic abilities of the characters) . But the bleakness of the chronicle strengthens the main character’s search for purpose and identity. It’s a search that leads towards the universal truth… are you a victim of fate? … or a participant in your hold destiny? Are you what others want you to be? … or are you what you beget you can be? Questions that we all strive with every day.
If you are expecting a computer spellbinding movie on the level of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, you’ll be disappointed. The company who made this obviously did not have a comparable budget. However, despite that, they have done an admirable job. The report is attractive and vibrant, with backgrounds richly detailed. Characters, while not having the high detail of say the Spirits Within, are composed distinctly rendered (one particular female quite alluringly so!) . And though animation is not extravagant through many of the dialogue heavy scenes, its sure the creators saved their best for the action sequences. The psychic battles are often quite spectacular and gut wrenching (literally… at least once!) .
Buy,Download, Or Stream Galerians – Rion! Click Here
The dispute acting, at least the English cast, is adequate (I’m terrified I don’t like reading subtitles… distracts me from the report!) . But, a few do rise above the rest… particularly Lia Sargent as Rita, Dave Mallow as Rainheart… and holding it all together… Dave Wittenberg as Rion (he’s at his best when Rion is pushed to the edge in his psychic confrontations) .
The only valid dilemma I had with Galerians: Rion was that there was fair not enough of it. The yarn position seems so ripe for more elaboration that I can only hope that the producers of this film can someday afford to do more… or that some bigger studio might be vivid enough to snap up the film rights. Despite more money, they would be hard pressed to attach in such a well-behaved trouble as Director Masahiko Maesawa and Producers Enterbrain and Polygon Magic did.

What’s this? A fresh “Nightmare Before Christmas” DVD package? Actually there are three versions: this two-disc location that includes a downloadable digital copy, a Blu-ray version, and a collector’s edition that comes with a bust of Jack Skellington with a detachable Sandy Claus beard and hat.
Though this version is billed as a two-disc residence, it actually has three discs. The third one contains the digital copy. An instruction sheet spells out in definite steps how to download the file to an iPod or similar diagram.

The movie itself is a feast for the eyes, ears and imagination. A scrumptious witches’ brew of stop-motion animation, catchy indicate tunes and a seriously warped creative license, it always stays correct to its timeless message: to be cheerful, be yourself. Devilishly nonconformist, it’s an enduring holiday musical for the whole Addams family.
Well, almost. Though all of its apprehension gags are played entirely for laughs, some of the imagery is downright creepy, especially for slight children. Anyone older than say, 6, however, should bask in every petite. Teenagers will adore it.
The legend — the citizens of Halloweentown attempt to annex neighboring Christmastown — comes from the macabre mind of producer Tim Burton, who wrote it in his spare time (as a poem!) while working as a Disney animator in the 1980s. The movie blends the tastiest bits of Burton’s earlier Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands with a sprinkling of the stop-motion magic first found in Disney’s 1961 Babes in Toyland.
The imaginative cast of characters includes:
* Pumpkin King Jack Skellington (Chris Sarandon), a roguish misfit who believes his purpose in life is to merge the holidays of Halloween and Christmas.
* Jack’s faithful dog Zero, a ghost with a fine, jack-o’-lantern nose who, like the hound in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, eventually pulls a sleigh
* Rag-doll heroine Sally (voiced by Catherine O’Hara), Jack’s savor interest, who sews herself abet together when she loses a body part
* Oogie Boogie (Broadway ragged Ken Page), a slimy, singing bag of bugs who channels the cartoon version of Cab Calloway in the primitive Betty Boop cartoons
* Lock (Paul “Pee-Wee Herman” Reubens), Shock (O’Hara) and Barrel (Danny Elfman, the film’s composer), a trio of unfriendly trick-or-treaters who “kidnap the Sandy Claws”
* Wheelchair-bound depraved scientist Dr. Finklestein (William Hickey), a duckbilled quack whose flip-top head lets him scratch his brains for inspiration
* A mayor (Glenn Shadix, the interior director Otho in Beetlejuice) who is literally two-faced.
Blessed with the ability to bring adult minds assist to child’s level, Burton dwells in shadowy mischief. In fact, some of Nightmare’s best scenes include the kidnapping of Santa Claus and Jack’s hilarious attempt to replace him on Christmas Eve, when the skeleton gleefully delivers presents such as tree-devouring snakes and severed, shrunken heads.
Director Henry Selick painstakingly created the film over three years. Though he had a production crew of over 100, each small of footage took a week, as each second required 24 ever-so-slightly different shots.
BONUS FEATURES
This 2-disc DVD package has a nice collection of extras:
* An audio commentary with Burton, Selick and Elfman.
* A downloadable digital copy of the film, which you can transfer to an iPod or similar way.
* Burton’s first short, 1982′s 6-minute “Vincent,” a black-and-white stop-action film about a boy who dreams of being Vincent Notice, who narrates.
* Burton’s 1994 Disney live-action short “Frankenweenie.” This 30-minute black-and-white film re-imagines the Frankenstein fable as the narrative of a young boy and his car-struck pet dog in suburban America. A recently taped introduction by Burton shows some working sketches being obsolete for his full-length version now in development.
* A reading of Burton’s modern “Nightmare Before Christmas” poem by actor Christopher Lee
* A promotional film for the annual “Nightmare” makeover of Disneyland’s Worried Mansion.
* Promotional and making-of featurettes, a storyboard to film comparison, deleted scenes and theatrical trailers and posters
If you consider the best movies are the ones that display you a world you’ve never envisioned before, then you will Worship Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. A benchmark in stop-motion animation, this incredibly difficult-to-make film (24 individually posed frames were needed to construct ONE SECONDS’s worth of action) is a masterpiece of art direction, situation execute, and sterling ancient storytelling. The spot revolves around Jack, the Pumpkin King of Halloween, and his attempt to speed Christmas in location of Santa Claus. “Sleigh” becomes confused with “destroy”; “stockings” become “stalkings”; and spirits go from joyous to ghostly as the two holidays clash together like oil and water, or fire and ice. One of the huge surprises of the movie is that although it dances around material that could easily careen into cynicism, it remains refreshingly sweet and light throughout. Which is not to say that some of the comedy isn’t a exiguous shaded and perhaps geared more towards older children and adults; for example, the brief scene in which a python puppet is shown swallowing a Christmas tree whole is hysterically silly, but not especially appropriate for the very young.

The special edition DVD is unquestionably the version of this classic to win. Included are a wealth of extras: the teaser and theatrical trailers; a documentary on “The Making of …”; deleted scenes and storyboards, etc, etc. The best bonuses are two short films by Burton: “Vincent”, a poetic tribute to the attractive Vincent Effect, narrated by the subject himself; and “Frankenweenie”, a canine send-up of “Frankenstein”, starring Shelley Duvall, Daniel Stern, and a cast of talented character actors. This DVD is one that you can consume HOURS exploring happily! Highly recommended as both a Halloween and Christmas treat.

I wrote the current after skipping around the discs and being extremely disappointed by what I saw. Since then, I’ve sat down and watched both movies on this disc and my notion has changed somewhat. The predicament was my expectations, not the staunch product.
On the whole, these films DO peek incredible when compared to every other DVD release available (MGM and the R2 Pathe discs from France) . However, they don’t glimpse nearly as ample as I absorb possible. I deem this film deserves the royal treatment, an all novel, high definition transfer by seriously skilled people.

Unfortunately, while the resolution is righteous, it is anamorphic, and appears to be a straight NTSC transfer (and not a PAL-to-NTSC conversion as I previously plan), there is unprejudiced something not good. The colors are plan too hot when compared to the accurate film, and there unbiased seems to be a layer of fuzz or blur over the whole thing that is not indicate on the colossal conceal.
I give it 5 stars because the films are wonderful. The two greatest foreign films I’ve ever seen. I’ve watched them each about 15 times, and never grow tired of them. I delicate considerable learned French watching these movies.
However, this DVD seriously lacks. This movie is in dire need of a modern and improved subtitle translation. While the subtitles obtain sense on the whole, I’ve studied the French script, and there is a mammoth deal missing in the translation.
There are no special features.
For YEARS, these films have been out of print in America, the originals going for upwards of $50 a share on ebay. Clearly someone was paying attention and realized there’s enough people who delight in this movie to obtain it available again. But slapping this place together, while allowing fresh viewers the opportunity to discover the films, is an insult to fans who’ve waited a LOOOONG time for a kindly American release. But a cheap release is better than none at all.
Caveat: Perhaps if enough people grasp this DVD, MGM will wake up and release a marvelous special edition. For $14, it’s a expansive deal for two masterpieces, but we could’ve done better than this.
Two spacious steps forward, and one 1/2 step assist. Contrary to the impression from the disc specs on the help of the jacket, the novel MGM/Fox double feature disc DOES show the films 16:9 enhanced. They are also, surprisingly a titanic step up from the earlier R2 PAL discs, which for the longest time were the only scheme to satisfyingly gaze these on a widescreen reveal or front projector.
Unfortunately they mild aren’t a home accelerate. The represent in general consistently looks a tiny too ‘hot’ – disagreement is jacked up which blows out the details in the highlights in many shots- also there is an at times over bearing yellow tint to the image in the countryside exteriors. Some EE and ringing are also visible in a few shots. Handsome detail on the other hand is worthy improved over the PAL disc and artifacts related to compression are a monumental improvment over the first MGM release.
These should have been color timed a bit cooler- but on the whole, this recent release easily represents the most watchable versions of these two classics yet (at least, not counting the widescreen Image laserdisc station that is now long out of print) .
Its a shame that this release is so end, and yet aloof misses the impress. At least this one will suffice for a few years until the film are (hopefully) properly presented on one or both of the High Def formats.
The films themselves accept 5 stars easy- the recent disc gets 3.5 for PQ and AQ.

This film is about the steady life bank robber John Dillinger who is arguably the most famed robber in the history of American and earned the nickname “Public Enemy #1″. From my brief research on the internet, the movie appears to be relatively honest to do. From the early `30s until his death in 1934, Dillinger wreaked havoc across America with his brutal bank robberies and gallant prison escapes.
The film itself moves hasty, but is only 70 minutes long. There is microscopic character development and the action is continuous and rarely lifeless. Lawrence Tierney stars as John Dillinger. This was his cloak acting debut and he does dinky to situation the acting world on fire. Even in scenes of major confrontation, Tierney seems tedious and lacks emotional body language. Perhaps this was by get by the director. But if you are fan of vintage gangster films, I’m confident that you will be entertained and cheerful with action and drama.

The DVD was remastered but not restored and unfortunately there was a distinguished amount of film pain. There were five or six scenes with at least 3 or 4 seconds of severely damaged footage. The remastering helped earn the describe glimpse intriguing but small specs of deterioration were collected prevalent throughout the film, but that wasn’t a major deal compared to the noticeably larger scratches. Warner has historically been one of the better studios for film restoration and they obviously decided to not fix up this film. Due to the exiguous market of a DVD like this, I’m distinct the payoff wasn’t there to restore an entire movie, but if they would have at least fixed the severely damaged frames, that would have been sufficient for me.
PLEASE NOTE: Before buying this DVD, judge buying the Film Noir Classic Collection, Vol. 2 which contains this movie plus four other highly recommended movies at a very reasonable label.
Movie: B-
DVD Quality: C
This is definitely one of Hollywood’s first (if not the very first) movies about the famed gangster, John Dillinger. Lawrence Tierney plays him to perfection as he guns down his victims while his frigid, emotionless face shows no remorse. One of the most brutal scenes of all the gangster classics is when Tierney discovers an elderly couple about to phone the police & turn him in, & promptly guns them down. While this isn’t a very factual chronicle of Dillinger’s life, the main elements are there, especially the mysterious “lady in red” who betrays Dillinger to the police. Unfortunately, cramped time is spent on the details of his many bank robberies, but after all, this is a crime drama, not a documentary. Although largely forgotten today, this was a sizable success support in 1945, making Lawrence Tierney a star. His acclaimed performance in this classic led to starring roles in some vast film noirs & gangster dramas: “Born to Ruin”-1947, “The Devil Thumbs a Stagger”-1947, “Bodyguard”-1948, “Shakedown”-1950, “The Hoodlum”-1951. If you like an bright gangster flick & aren’t too picky about getting the facts accurate then this one’s for you.

“I have no wish to fight you (Leonard Maltin)” BAMM!![]()
When I first viewed this film when I was 10 years old on May 23, 1992, when fell in love with it from the very start. It was so rare a feeling at that age to actually feel good in a very human way, not just as a spectator. The movie’s theme seems to be a very trite one: Always follow your dreams. Many films have tried to exercise this theme and failed miserably. They will pump a lot of cheesy moments into one finale, without any kind of supporting events to show that it is an earned pay off. FAR AND AWAY succeeds where these other films fail. The journey starts at point A and goes straight to point B without any pishposh in between. You are with Joseph and Shannon through their fortunes and misfortunes and see almost every step they take from getting to rural Ireland to Boston and finally to Oklahoma. What also makes it work is the onscreen chemistry between Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. The two had only done one movie together (DAYS OF THUNDER) before teaming up for this one. At the time, they had only been married for a year, so their new found love for each other was fresh in their minds and ready to be shared. The advantage Cruise has for playing a scrappy Irish boxer is his star status and the amount of time he spends with a personal trainer. His bulging muscles in the boxing scenes show that he’s no longer the little bugger in RISKY BUSINESS. It also doesn’t hurt that the film is beautifully shot, taking adavantage of the rich Irish coast and the vast farmland of Oklahoma. This beautifully illustrates the long journey of the films location and plot. How exceedingly different the images feel and how far must one travel to get to each! Perhaps another reason this film is so special to me is the complete and utter romantic feel it has. The beautiful scenery, the love between the two lead characters and actors, and the gorgeous music. The score is one of John Williams’ best setting all the right moods in all the right places. He starts with traditional Irish folk sounds and moves into Coplandesque America. Watching this film, my heart always goes a flutter, thinking about how I want to achieve my dreams and ambitions. One of my dreams is true love. The way Joseph and Shannon find love is striving for their dream, not knowing it was there all along. I am madly in love with a girl right now. In my fantasies, I always picture myself as Joseph and her as Shannon, kissing on an open wheatfield, our land. Whenever I hear Enya’s book of days played at the ending credits, I almost weep with joy thinking about holding her and sharing my love with her. Watching FAR AND AWAY is the closest I get to fulfilling my dreams at this point. Leonard Maltin complains of no story. If there was no story, there’d be no kind of journey and I would be completly detatched. I give FAR AND AWAY 5 stars because it has stirred almost every emotion in me for over 8 years. A movie like this deserves no less.
I can’t believe this is only a 2-star movie.![]()
I might I have only been intrigued by this movie because I was bored (first saw it at 12:00 at night on TV when I couldn’t sleep), but I was shocked at what a MIRACULOUS film this is. I couldn’t stop thinking about it for days. For critics to say there was no story, WHERE WERE YOU DURING THIS MOVIE? All the twists and turns kept me guessing until the end. It was in no way predictable. All throughout the movie, I thought Shannon and Joseph would kiss and live happily ever after, but something would tear them apart. Films like this come few and far between. I highly recommend this epic!!!
Irish accents?![]()
I really liked this movie but the reviews here are even more entertaining. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman had bad Irish accents? Vivian Leigh’s Scarlet O’Hara had the worst southern American accent imaginable. Her movie (….”Gone with something?… wasn’t it called?) managed to survive it.
No story in Far and Away? Let’s see… Spoiled rich Irish Protestant girl meets poor Catholic Irish boy and romantic sparks fly as surface insults are traded. Both dream of a new life in America but for different reasons. The parents of the girl are each magnificently portrayed by fine actors. The manager of the wealthy father’s holdings, and Shannon’s would-be suitor, is a man you love to hate thanks to the fine acting of this character.
The cinematography is magnificent. The story varies from epic to tragic to comic to Western in the way a true Irish immigrant’s life would unfold in the period. There’s action and humor. There’s an underlying dream driving the entire movie. There is a beautiful young woman and a handsome young man who both have the kind of drive an Irish immigrant would need to survive the rough and tumble life in America in the late 1800′s.
The costumes and sets are great. The land rush scenes are magnificent and accurately portray what has been captured in still photos of the real Oklahoma land rushes.
There are no gratuitous sex scenes though the bawdiness of life in an Irish Boston whorehouse is honestly portrayed.
There is a triumphant scene at the end where love does prevail over the desire for material wealth through land ownership.
For the life of me, I cannot see what is missing from this movie. I liked it. I bought it. I’m glad I’m not married to some of these reviewers who would complain the luxury car I just bought them as a gift did not have enough lighting around the visor vanity mirror.
Shannon Christie, the spoiled rich girl in this movie, has nothing on some of these reviewers.
