I remember seeing this film in theaters when it first came out. I was so struck by the dismal drama and exquisite wit of the imagery that I dragged EVERYONE I KNEW to stare it. They quiet have my fingermarks on their arms.

Jarman’s film is not a biography in the strict sense. Rather, he uses Caravaggio’s paintings and a loose chronology of events as a point of departure to prove his believe musings on art, like, sexuality and its politics. The photography is painterly in the best sense of the word and evokes the period acutely. The cast, a director’s dream by any standard, is aesthetic. Tilda Swindon absolutely glows on mask, Sean Bean is as feral as a tomcat, and Nigel Terry is believably world-weary and laconic, a prisoner of his vision, his debauchery, and the unfolding destiny the intersection of the two character traits dictates.
Jarman makes righteous consume of anachronistic elements in the film to point out the relevance of those issues to the exhibit day. My popular scene shows a Vatican functionary, wearing nothing but his nightcap, sitting in a porcelain bathtub and typing on a manual typerwriter…in the 15th century! The witticisms are unmistakeable and very ably presented. Ironically, they produce the whole film seem even more convincingly Baroque.

Video was the last time this film was available, and I’m very joyful that someone had the nerve to reissue it on DVD. It is a very long time coming.

“Caravaggio” by Derek Jarman is a sparkling visionary art film which is the director’s select on the life of Caravaggio. Nigel Terry and Sean Bean are the lovers in Jarman’s meditation on sexuality, criminality and art. Jarman fictionalizes Caravaggio’s life by using the works of the artist as a design to inspect his life. This is a visually elegant movie as has become Jarman’s trademark. Here the actors and actresses are also gorgeous and Sean Bean is fabulous as Caravaggio’s lover, Ranucio. When he is on the veil, he owns the movie. He possesses immense animal magnetism, sexual energy and wild persona grips the film and moves it forward.
Like all of Jarman’s films, this is not a mainstream movie. There are several anachronisms here–modern musical instruments play at the parties, 17th century merchants expend hand-held calculators, scribes write on typewriters and servants are dressed in unusual dinner jackets. I am not positive what this means but I converse it is to reveal that the account of Caravaggio is timeless.
We do not know worthy about the life of Caravaggio and this film does not mediate the diminutive that we know. The merits of Jarman’s epic are debatable but unimportant when thinking about this film. The strength of “Caravaggio” is the extraordinary cinematography and the incorporation of his artwork into the film. The color tones of the film seem to have advance directly from the artist’s palette; they are that strong and attractive. Therefore the movie has the watch of an exact painting.

Great movie….not so great DVD unfortunately…
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Purple Rain and Prince ‘s (the artist) music, but this DVD was kind of disappointing. The video quality of the transfer looks pretty good for its age, but why isn’t there a widescreen version? The production notes that Warner puts on their DVDs are annoying and glare off the TV. Oh, and a trailer. I know this isn’t a special edition, but there was so much stuff that could have been used. I guess you get what you pay for though. The movie gets 5 stars, but the DVD gets a 2/5.
It’s Not Just A Music Video
Leonard Maltin’s review missed the main point of this movie. The movie is not primarily about a young musician who “struggles to gain acceptance for his own brand of … rock music”. Instead, the movie is about a man who has acquired his not only some of his father’s musical interest and talent, but also his father’s emotional instability and occasional abusiveness towards others, especially women. Maltin is correct that Prince’s character is sexist and unappealing, but that’s crucial to the movie. By playing his character as emotionally unstable, insensitive, and occasionally cruel, Prince de-glamourizes the cool, rebellious rock star image, showing that fame and talent are neither a guaranteed road to happiness nor a good excuse for being cruel to your girlfriend. This movie, rather than being a “soppy story” wrapped around concert footage, is instead genuinely literary. The concert footage is not an excuse for a movie; some of the concert footage is integral to the story. The title song, “Purple Rain”, is used very effectively in the movie as a point of conflict between Prince and two of his female bandmates.
This movie, like Quadrophenia, would make a good subject for an English literature class targeted towards aimlessly rebellious under-achievers (rather than the 4.0 GPA high school students that most English literature classes are designed for).

I remember when I recently saw Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back,Jay showed his affinity towards Morris Day and the Time.Then some teenagers called Purple Rain “a crappy 80′s movie”.Although most of Y generation view Purple Rain like the second coming of Grease 2,Purple Rain rocked back in ’84 with people actually dancing in the isles.
This movie finally brought Prince into the mainstream and showed the genius that he was.Although he’d been making records since 1978,he made his mark with such albums as Dirty Mind, Controversy,and 1999(his breakout album with his first top ten hit Little Red Corvette)but only to a limited R&B and underground market.But once Purple Rain hit,things were never the same.The movie also brought Morris Day and The Time to the mainstream which unfortunately they would soon break up to never enjoy the fruits.
The movie is pretty much about a musician called The Kid (Prince) who dreams of making it despite his troubled homelife and a rival band, The Time.The movie has it’s fair share of bad acting as well as misogyny (“That ain’t Lake Minnitonka”)it’s the musical numbers as well as Morris Day’s comic timing that steals the show.The music still sounds fresh, especially the minimalist When Doves Cry which could even be released today.
Hopefully Warner brothers will release a 20th anniversary edition DVD with loads of extras as well as deleted scenes which were featured in the trailer.And with Prince’s comeback in 2004 including his Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame induction, Grammy performance and tour,it would really be the year of Prince.

Wow. What a enormous DVD.
The one hour documentary featuring interviews with some of the cast, Robert Wise, Harold Prince, Sondheim, and some key crew members is completely bright. Home movie footage showing the filming of the movie is included. Examples of the techniques that the movie makers obsolete to film a musical are inviting. I was amazed that the knife scene, for example, is COMPLETELY counted out and the actor/dancers’ movements were choreographed down to the second (breath, two, three, four; stab, two three; scrutinize, two, three, four) . Fabulous! Rita Morena is particularly informative regarding the dubbing of her song “A Boy Like That”. The Robbins/Wise codirecting of the film is explained. And some of Natalie Wood’s unique vocals are included. The documentary is invaluable for fans of the film.
As for the film itself, it looks and sounds fantastic on my widescreen HDTV. The anamorphic transfer is very capable.

The DVD is packaged very well. The book which accompanies the region is very cold, with a colossal introduction by screenwriter Ernest Lehman (who is one of my movie heros) .
I’m very impressed with this special edition of WEST SIDE Tale. The film is a classic, and deserves such treatment.
“West Side Record” is proof that the sum of its parts can not only be greater than the whole, but possibly be the greatest!

Director Jennifer Baichwal accompanied Burtynsky on several trips to Asia, observing the artist at work and allowing a movie camera to ogle the industrial landscape as he does. Baichwal wisely subscribes to the same philosophy as Burtynsky in never interpreting or demystifying the photos. This is a very qualified movie that houses an exceptionally titanic performance by Jamie Fox as music yarn Ray Charles. I must confess that as a genre, the biopic is not my approved, especially of figures as well known as Ray Charles. We usually receive in such films distorted portraits of them, or undeserved adulation. RAY is one of the more balanced biopics I have seen. Ray Charles is presented as a musical genius who had managed to overcome physical disabilities that would have stopped most others, but it doesn’t attempt to soundless the serious and unflattering personal factual problems he had with drugs and his exploitative treatment of women. Nor is he revealed as a accurate saint or loving person. Though kindly with others for the most fraction, Ray is shown as a proud, independent, and slightly self-absorbed, a bit selfish in his treatment of women. As a result, Ray Charles emerges in the film as a believable human being, profitable of unhappy decisions, but also amazing music and the occasional noteworthy fair stand, such as when he refuses to produce in a racially segregated crowd in a venue in Georgia. In fact, the film is built around three foci: his early childhood when he witnessed the death of his younger brother and gradually lost his sight; his musical career from 1948 until the mid-1960s; and his heroin addiction. Yes, he does a killer impersonation of Charles, but he manages that first on top of that provides an improbable dramatic performance. This is ample acting, not merely a vast impersonation. The only performance of modern years of an actor portraying a prominent entertainer as gracious as this is Robert Downey in CHAPLIN.
I also really loved the glance of the film. Since it ended in the mid-1960s, the entire film was essentially a period film. There was a sense of visual veracity from beginning to slay. I loved the cars, the clothes (especially the ties! – am I alone in thinking that the 1950s was the substantial decade for neckties? ), the interior decors, the furniture. The scenes in the shanty town where Charles was a child were very effective.

The cast aside from Fox was quite strong, made up mainly of relatively unknown performers. There were many other things to bask in about the film. The film does a reliable job of presenting Charles’s dilemma: ABC-Monument made him an offer that he simply couldn’t refuse, yet at the same time we are all aware that Charles was, in a contrivance, screwing Atlantic over by leaving them for ABC-Monument. All in all, I loved this warts and all advance to the subject matter. The man that this film showed me was an improbable example of determination, charm and simple human spirit. I have heard others say that Jamie Foxx’s acting was so sterling that they were half-convinced he was channeling Ray Charles’ ghost. I’ll lift their word for it that it was an upright performance, but regardless, it was also a ample performance! Down the line each of the supporting actors was perfectly convincing and true, but none more so than Foxx. I will denounce the Academy if he isn’t at least nominated for an Oscar.
The least of Ray’s imperfections was his physical blindness –yet he had a great gift and the ability to approach into the collective soul of a nation. Over his long career as a musician and songwriter, Ray Charles Robinson created and performed some of the most memorable music to audiences across the country. Your color, age and creed doesn’t matter; chances are, you’ve heard and loved at least one Ray Charles song in your lifetime. We’ll never have another like him.

What starts out as a very violent and spirited movie ends up sort of floating the rest of the design. They don’t have a lot of character development. Some characters you will understand but most will leave you with a lot of questions. Even Donnie Yen’s character who they probably went the most in depth on didn’t bag pudgy treatment. Maybe it was impartial that he was speaking Korean bugged me. It is fair unique. There is nothing to really carry the sage, except the General who is always going to near after the seven swordsmen and the villagers they are protecting. While the violence is well done and the General’s top soldiers are truly outrageous and have mountainous battle sequences, everything else is fair draw too standard. The villian is ruthless and impartial cruel as he can be, the heroes are all very genuine, honest nothing really inviting happens. The villain was by far my approved character but he is not the main character. The acting is obedient and has some very nice touches with Lau Kar Leung playing Fu and Jason Pao Paio playing the leader of the town. The soundtrack is vast. The locations and cinematography are heavenly. Costumes really don’t win any better than this. I liked the novel editing. The special effects are gargantuan and it was done by Weta Workshop who did the CGI for The Lord Of the Rings movies. Unfortunately all of this cannot overcome a tale that honest doesn’t diagram you in. By the extinguish of it you realize that the swords were the main fable which I liked and the final fight isn’t too unpleasant. Actually, the action starts out very well but doesn’t really score genuine again until the ruin. You will most likely want to contemplate this movie again since its not half poor, it honest doesn’t obtain complete sense. After seeing it once and watching it again, for me there will be no 3rd viewing. I would no doubt see a allotment 2 if Tsui Hark ever decides to makes it but I have heard talk of this ever since this “first allotment” was made and after a while it is too easy to forget about a movie project. I found the TV prove ‘Seven Swordsmen’ with Vincent Zhao and Ada Choi worthy more savory. Of course, it had a lot more time to account for the characters being 39 one hour episodes long. I was hoping to acquire this movie and show the other reviewers cross but it honest didn’t happen. Luckily there are enough extras on this to maintain me busy for a while.

Dragon Dynasty puts outs out the uncut version as opposed to the shortened version which is widely distributed. She says “her parents wanted her to be simply outstanding.” At 16 years extinct she wants to become an artist which her parents disagree with. She ends up running away! Improbable interview.
26 minutes with Duncan Lai talking about his windsurfing career and getting into the movies. Nice to obtain all the info provided here since I have never heard of him before.
Amazingly all of these interviews are English. I guess it is impartial a coincidence that they all spoke the langauge.
There is also a making of that is about 20 minutes long and is accompanied by some very grand music. This includes interviews and a peer slow the scenes. Steve Tung Wai and Xin Xin Xiong are the credited action directors but I only saw Lau Kar Leung in all of the slow the scenes featurettes and this making of special feature. I guess it is fair a given that Master Lau and Donnie Yen had a hand in the action. In the commentary though, they actually do credit Lau with the biggest fragment of the action and planning everything.
I wish the movie was profitable enough to give it a rating of at least a 4 but the DVD itself gets a 5 star rating for the amount of special features and the quality of it overall.
Yes the other reviewers are suitable. Its difficult to go into a lot of character development when you have 7 characters (not counting the dreadful guys) to fit into a two hour movie. It would have been nice to gather out more about the awful guys also. And yes you have to “bear in the blanks” because it doesn’t account for a lot but hey its not a four hour movie so they can only do so noteworthy. But you can also simply relax and fair indulge in an action flix. It reminded me of the Heavenly 7 and 7 Samurai in that there are 7 of them coming to the abet of a ‘helpless’ village against the poor guys. If you like action/martial arts movies at least rent this one.
While its not the best action flix its not the worst neither. I certainly enjoyed it more than Crank (which I had high expectations for, hoping it would be as superb as Transporter.)
I’d give it 3 1/2+ stars but bumped it up to 4 rather than down to 3 due to the extra features along with an uncut version (haven’t viewed that unprejudiced yet but did go through most of the interviews.)
I’m considering getting the Seven Swordsmen DVD box plot which according to reviewers of that TV Series is a more detailed narrative about the individual characters.

I didn’t know what to inquire of when I effect this DVD in my player. I had never heard Yanni’s music before but my brother told me it was a MUST HAVE. So I got myself a copy too and let me direct you that this is a MASTERPIECE! Yanni breaks borders and boundaries in this powerful concert filmed in India’s Taj Mahal and Beijing’s Forbidden City. All the musicians are truly gifted and there performances really add something special to Yanni’s compositions. If your looking for the ULTIMATE concert DVD ogle no further! A previous reviewer complained that there is a small quit (or “freeze” if you win) during one of the songs. This is because the disc is DUAL LAYERED with the layer change occurring correct on the beginning of the 4th song. It is quite a capable change that doesn’t interfere with the overall lag.
With the Concert and Additional documentary spread over a dual layered disc the results are a reliable report quality that is shapely and keen. I won’t complain that it isn’t widescreen because what we derive here is a high definition fullscreen describe free of noticeable defects. The Sound is also fantastic! Included is both Stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio tracks that are obvious and well defined (and not “over cooked” as one reviewer claimed) . Also included is the documentary “No Borders, No Boundaries” which takes an engrossing behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of Tribute and Yanni’s travels throughout these two captivating countries. Bonus features also include a unique interview with Yanni and footage of the artist at work in his state-of-the-art recording studio.
Overall this disc is reference material even down to the spirited menu’s that are some of the best I’ve seen! You have to earn this DVD and behold the musical genius that is Yanni!!
Already owning the CD and the video, I was contented I could select the DVD version of Tribute. Deliverance is without a doubt the best track on this DVD, combining immense rhythms, string orchestra, chants by the female vocalists and marvellous melodies and native instruments into a radiant composition. This track alone is more than worth the stamp of the DVD.

Adagio In G Minor is a very soundtrack-like fraction with piano and string orchestra. Renegade is sort of a soprano saxophone/violin duet.
Dance With A Stranger is a share where various instruments play a short solo. A very relaxed and laid-back section. Tribute is another highlight with vocals in the intro, followed by some blooming violin playing accompanied by a choir. Very classical oriented.
Prelude a short portion with native instruments. After a couple of minutes this fragment goes into Like is All, which is one of the two only tracks with lyrics on the album. Accompanied by Spanish guitar this is a rather radio-friendly tune with huge soulful vocals and the chunky choir.Southern Exposure starts another laid help tune with female backing vocals, saxophone and violin. Later on in the song things acquire more rhythmic and swinging with nice interplay between the violins and female vocalists. Next in line is Waltz In 7/8 then. Mammoth part of work with flutes, latin influences and a keyboard solo. Nightingale is probably one of the quietest songs on the DVD.It features some bird like flute-playing with a little Japanese feeling. Of course the tall string orchestra is indicate as well.
Niki Nana (We’re One) starts with the native sounds of a didgeridoo. After about half a microscopic the electric band picks up, a flute plays and the vocalists inaugurate. Marvellous song. In addition to the CD version the DVD and video version extinguish with the track Santorini, from the Live at the Acropolis album, which equals the track Deliverance for me in giving me goose bumps all over my body. The DVD as well as the video contains also “the making of” and this fragment is really well worth watching because it shows more of the satisfied reactions of the audience itself and gives you insight in Yannis life. The whole explain itself is a pleasure to recognize. The fun the members of the band have in performing their music is huge to peer and gets you in a qualified mood as well.The only thing I glimpse as a disappointment is the fact that the DVD was not released in the Dolby 5.1 surround mode. That could have lifted up the experience in seeing, hearing and feeling this music to the ultimate top.
