This was one of those books that I knew was going to upset me but I had to read it. Ms. Wolf makes a strong case that we are at the brink of losing our democracy; it is justifiable to compare the unique neo-conservative movement in America to past repressive regimes. Some of her points:

The tampering of our free elections (voter machine fraud, the Supreme Court illegally over riding our democracy and appointing George Bush President; the selective removal of Americans from voting lists; etc.)
Ms. Wolf’s point is that these attacks are done boldly and deliberatly to frighten and intimidate Americans into doing nothing.
I found this book to be most frightening because most Americans aren’t even aware that there is a jam. There is a deliberate travel in this country to wipe out middle class America (unaffordable educatuion, the extinguish of pensions, the attempt of President Bush to convince Americans that Social Security is bad; unaffordable health insurance, etc.) I hope this DVD release acts as a wake up call to all Americans.
I disfavor the Bush administration as powerful as anyone, thank god he’s outta there, but this film is objective design too biased. I had a feeling that the author was cherry picking events and give it her believe interpretation that supports a vastly biased agenda, she’s clear to paint the Bush administration as sinister as Hitler’s Nazis reign. While I do contemplate that it was a uninteresting, insensitive administration and had a outrageous reach to how it would govern this country and poorly weaved its representation to the rest of the world, I don’t judge they were as wicked as the film portrayed them to be. It was stretching it a bit too far, and that downplayed its credibility a bit for me. Even though I wanted to like it, my skepticism changed only a runt by the time the movie was over.
However, there were helpful moments in the film though, and I found myself nodding along side it at clear parts. I wouldn’t say that this is a “must-see”, but it’s definitely more thought-provoking and racy than your average small-town theater flick.
Not positive why all the attention was on Blackwater while Dick Cheney’s Halliburton got off scotch-free, and it was impartial as shady as Blackwater, if not more.

The editor’s review of this film is a fair enough description of the plot. One should add that, despite being made in 1971, the movie manages not to look dated, precisely because it makes such fun of the early 70s style, and that the acting by the three main characters (Harold, Maude and Harold’s mother) is simply inspired. Ruth Gordon is splendid of course, while Bud Cort gives a lifetime performance, but it is the portrayal of Harold’s mother by Vivian Pickles (what a splendid name for someone in the role) that has to be the most undercelebrated aspect of this film. Her breezy blitheness, outraged exasperation, and British sensibility are all just too wonderful. Filling out a dating questionnaire for her son, in response to the question “Do you find the idea of wife-swapping offensive” she answers, “I find the question offensive.” In response to the question, “Do you feel the women’s liberation movement has gone too far,” she replies, “It cer-tain-ly has.” Even “Harold, eat your beets” is delivered so wonderfully that it’s memorable. Eric Christmas also makes the bit-part of a priest into something memorable, principally by one splendid monologue.
NOTE: It’s been pointed out that a lot of the plot is given away in the following. It’s hard to say how much spoilers actually spoil this movie; spoilers may help to make the movie’s wisdom more readily apparent on a first viewing. In any case, there are several ahead.
But is this really a black comedy? Personally, I think of black comedies as being morbid and mordant, which Harold & Maude certainly has elements of, but also ultimately cynical. One should not mistake grimness in a film as a sign of nihilism; as the Japanese proverb runs, the ending is all-important. The film ultimately is not about an intergenerational love affair (surely the most “shocking” aspect of the film), but about Harold learning to embrace life. And it is precisely to make as effective as possible Harold’s decision to live life to the fullest (rather than continue to prefer to be dead) that it is first necessary to make his life miserable.
As insanely amusing as much of the movie is, it is also full of profundity after profundity from Maude, who is a nearly continuous font of wisdom, with laughter and humor being simply the most crucial values in her wisdom. When she asks Harold what he does for fun, he takes her to a picnic in a wrecking yard. She replies, “I’ll grant you, it has a certain something. But is it enough?” When Harold declines her offer of wine, she replies, “Oh go on, it’s organic.” And most beautiful of all, when Harold says, “I don’t want you to die, Maude. I love you,” she replies with perfect calmness, “Harold, that’s wonderful. Now go out and love some more.” If you’ve been caught up in the genuine spirit of this movie, the line will not seem like some breezy brush-off, but may instead bring tears to your eyes.
The scene of Harold’s grief after Maude’s death, intercutting silent images of him waiting in a hospital room and driving recklessly around the Marin headlands in the Jaguar he has converted into a hearse while Cat Steven’s song, “Trouble” plays, is very well-done and sets up the climax of the film beautifully. Cat Steven’s soundtrack throughout, in fact, is a splendid selection of songs, and certainly makes clear that, however morbid things might seem, this film is ultimately life-affirming in a very profound way.
Having watched this movie many, many times and having yet to tire of it, it seems to me there is more to it than meets the eye. And not just because, when Harold gives Maude an engraved birthday gift, she says, “This is the nicest gift anyone has given me in a long time,” and then throws it into the San Francisco Bay saying, “That way, I’ll always know where it is.” And not just because one eventually notices, in the briefest of passing shots, the tattoo of a concentration camp inmate on Maude’s arm. In the final analysis, it seems to me that Harold is actually already dead. That his theatrical suicides aren’t faked at all, but also don’t succeed because he himself is not aware that he’s actually dead. It’s probably more accurate to say that the director pushes the narrative to the point where Harold seems to be actually dead and not just faking, precisely to make his choice of life at the end all the more inspiring.
And inspiring it is. Harold & Maude is not (alas) for everyone. A viewer who is hidebound like the movie’s priest, colonel or mother (read church, state, authority) will find Maude’s sometimes gentle, sometimes brash mocking of convention more annoying than enlightening, just as the (not depicted) sexual relationship between Harold and Maude is the thing many people who miss the point remember about the movie. To this, Maude might say, as she does to a police officer, “Don’t be officious. You’re not yourself when you’re officious. That’s the curse of a government job.” Or as she says, when the priest replies that he didn’t like the way she’d painted his statue of the Virgin Mary, “Give it time. It’ll grow on you. Some things take a while to appreciate.”

I had heard about this movie through friends but was never impressed by the story. A reclusive anti social kid who befriends and falls in love with an elderly (though young at heart) eccentric. I wrote it off completely til I saw a bit of it on television and thought it was hilarious and as it turns out I rented the movie and was extremely hooked. Harold is a rich kid with a high strung, selfish mother who tries anything to find a suitor for him, in turn Harold escapes from his home to overshadow funeral processions and memorials. At a number of these events, Maude is in attendence and she lights up the scene with her off the wall,and positively upbeat personality that horrifies and amuses Harold. After a while they become unlikely friends. Maude helps Harold live a little and in turn he develops true affection to Maude. With Ruth Gordon’s charm and incredible acting abilites, and Cat Steven’s classy soundtrack, its not hard to find yourself feeling happy and free after the movie is over. It really teaches you a message about being your own person and enjoying life.
superb DVD production![]()
A lot of great movies have been poorly digitized or otherwise transfered to DVD without sufficient care and attention, but I was pleasantl surprised by the quality of this one. They found (or restored) a very clean and clear original print of the film and then digitally captured it beautifully. The soundtrack has also been enhanced with a remix of the Cat Stevens songs to take advantage of the stereo front speakers and the subwoofer. A wonderful movie, well presented.

“Riding Giants” is a advantageous documentary on the history of gigantic wave surfing, directed and co-written by Stacy Peralta, who also made 2001′s skateboarding documentary “Dogtown and Z-Boys”. Peralta was a Z-Boy himself, as well as a skateboarding manufacturer and videomaker, so “Dogtown” was very considerable his element. Interviews with Noll and other surfing giants of the time, including Ricky Grigg, Mickey Munoz, and Mike Stang, buy us through the genesis of the surfing lifestyle in Southern California to Hawaii’s Waimea Bay, through the explosion in surfing popularity brought on by “Gidget” in 1959, up until Noll surfed “the greatest swell of the 20th century” at Makaha in December of 1969. “Riding Giants”‘ second act focuses on Jeff Clark and the surfers of Maverick’s in Northern California. Clark tells the epic of surfing Maverick’s alone for 15 years before finally convincing 2 other surfers to join him in 1990. Maverick’s surfers talk about the challenges of wintry water, fog, and rocks and the day that Impress Foo died. The third act of “Riding Giants” profiles Laird Hamilton, a man who has been described as the “best colossal wave rider the world has seen”, and explores the relatively recent field of tow-in surfing, in which surfing becomes a partnership instead of a solitary pursuit. A tow-in by a jet ski provides surfers with the hurry required to procure substantial waves -up to 80 feet- at remarkable disaster. Hamilton and fellow surfers Darrick Doerner, Dave Kalama, and Gerry Lopez talk about discovering the tow-in technique and surfing Peahi (Jaws) .
To stutter the tale of surfing’s history, “Riding Giants” makes exercise of obsolete movie footage provided by Greg Noll, hundreds of archival photographs, interviews with surfers who were there, and the knowledge of co-writer Sam George, the editor of “Surfer” magazine. Unusual footage of Waimea, Maverick’s, and Peahi, some of which is quite comely, conveys the beauty and wonderful power of gigantic waves. The DVD: Bonus features include a making-of documentary, a featurette on the film’s premiere, 5 deleted scenes, 2 promo spots (for the soundtrack and for Quiksilver), and 2 audio commentaries. “The Making of Riding Giants” (27 minutes) starts out discussing the film’s genesis and includes comments by director Stacy Peralta, the producers, Greg Noll, Laird Hamilton, and Paul George. Then it gets into details of how the film was establish together: the interviews, editing, sound, and photos, as explained by Peralta and editor Paul Crowder. “Fuel TV’s Blue Carpet Special” (20 minutes) is a section about the film’s Hollywood premiere at the Egyptian Theater that includes interviews and film clips. It’s too long and uninteresting. The audio commentaries are both though-provoking. The first commentary, by director Stacy Peralta and editor Paul Crowder, is about filmmaking. Peralta and Crowder discuss the technical aspects of putting the film together. The one fault that I accept is that they frequently talk about the film’s music, but we cannot hear what they’re referring to, as the film’s audio is turned off for this entire commentary. The second commentary, by Sam George, Greg Noll, Jeff Clark, and Laird Hamilton, is about surfing. They don’t discuss making the film, but they comment on everything that they view in the film, including more details about the archival footage and commentary on nearly every surfer who appears onscreen. Aspiring documentarians will be pleased Peralta and Crowder’s audio commentary. The surfers’ commentary is elegant titillating for a wide audience. Subtitles for the film are available in English and French.
While the Billabong Odyssey tried to recreate The Endless Summer for the grand wave surfing location, Riding Giants is distinguished more ambitious. Modern from the success of his documentary on `70s skateboarding, Dogtown and the Z Boys, Stacy Peralta takes the next logical step and tackles the history of enormous wave surfing. What makes these men and women go such mountainous waves and hurry the risk, in some cases, of almost distinct death? This doc attempts to acknowledge that examine.
Peralta breaks things down into three acts, each one dominated by three legends of the sport from different eras. Greg Noll is a eminent surfer who rode the biggest wave ever. Jeff Clark tamed the wild surf 20 miles from San Francisco known as Mavericks. Laird Hamilton, the greatest great wave surfer of his generation, pioneered a unusual draw for riding tremendous waves further from the shore than had been previous attempted.
There is an audio commentary by Stacy Peralta and his editor Paul Crowder. They talk at length about the film was achieve together in terms of editing. This is an bewitching, informative track.
Surfing fans are in for a loyal treat with the second commentary track that features surfers, Sam George, Greg Noll, Jeff Clark and Laird Hamilton. It’s substantial to hear these guys, especially Noll, pronounce worn stories and crop loose with surf lingo. They joke and have fun watching the movie. It is also piquant to hear them talk about the technique of various surfers.
“The Making of Riding Giants” is a 28-minute peep at how Peralta made this doc. Peralta even talks about how he did his research and organized his doc.
“Fuel TV’s Blue Carpet Special” is a 20-minute scrutinize at the premiere of the film at the Egyptian Theater with stars like John Cusack in attendance.
Also included are five deleted scenes that include plenty of surfing sequences that were prick for time and a slightly different ending that would have utilized a Coldplay song.
There are also promos for the soundtrack and surf gear company Quiksilver.
Riding Giants presents an gripping contemplate at the history of tall wave surfing and the men and women who observe the ultimate wave: one that is bigger and larger than anyone has experienced before. This is a wonderful documentary, quite possibly the best one on surfing since The Endless Summer. It is easy for the newcomer to understand and luxuriate in and yet it also treats its subject with respect as well.

I remember seeing this film in theaters when it first came out. I was so struck by the dismal drama and exquisite wit of the imagery that I dragged EVERYONE I KNEW to stare it. They quiet have my fingermarks on their arms.

Jarman’s film is not a biography in the strict sense. Rather, he uses Caravaggio’s paintings and a loose chronology of events as a point of departure to prove his believe musings on art, like, sexuality and its politics. The photography is painterly in the best sense of the word and evokes the period acutely. The cast, a director’s dream by any standard, is aesthetic. Tilda Swindon absolutely glows on mask, Sean Bean is as feral as a tomcat, and Nigel Terry is believably world-weary and laconic, a prisoner of his vision, his debauchery, and the unfolding destiny the intersection of the two character traits dictates.
Jarman makes righteous consume of anachronistic elements in the film to point out the relevance of those issues to the exhibit day. My popular scene shows a Vatican functionary, wearing nothing but his nightcap, sitting in a porcelain bathtub and typing on a manual typerwriter…in the 15th century! The witticisms are unmistakeable and very ably presented. Ironically, they produce the whole film seem even more convincingly Baroque.

Video was the last time this film was available, and I’m very joyful that someone had the nerve to reissue it on DVD. It is a very long time coming.
“Caravaggio”
A Powerful Film

“Caravaggio” by Derek Jarman is a sparkling visionary art film which is the director’s select on the life of Caravaggio. Nigel Terry and Sean Bean are the lovers in Jarman’s meditation on sexuality, criminality and art. Jarman fictionalizes Caravaggio’s life by using the works of the artist as a design to inspect his life. This is a visually elegant movie as has become Jarman’s trademark. Here the actors and actresses are also gorgeous and Sean Bean is fabulous as Caravaggio’s lover, Ranucio. When he is on the veil, he owns the movie. He possesses immense animal magnetism, sexual energy and wild persona grips the film and moves it forward.
Like all of Jarman’s films, this is not a mainstream movie. There are several anachronisms here–modern musical instruments play at the parties, 17th century merchants expend hand-held calculators, scribes write on typewriters and servants are dressed in unusual dinner jackets. I am not positive what this means but I converse it is to reveal that the account of Caravaggio is timeless.
We do not know worthy about the life of Caravaggio and this film does not mediate the diminutive that we know. The merits of Jarman’s epic are debatable but unimportant when thinking about this film. The strength of “Caravaggio” is the extraordinary cinematography and the incorporation of his artwork into the film. The color tones of the film seem to have advance directly from the artist’s palette; they are that strong and attractive. Therefore the movie has the watch of an exact painting.
This is unlike any biographical film you will ever inspect. We net a satire on the shallowness of the art scene of the 80′s and we procure that fact and fiction merge. Caravaggio’s themes were sex, death, redemption and finding the sacred within the profane. He lived at a time when homosexuality was a crime that carried the death sentence and political intrigues usually keen death in a society defined by the concept of “strangling the boy for the purity of his shout”.
Visually this is a aesthetic watch at a man whose life exuded inconvenience, excitement, violence and decadence but who elevated the lives of ordinary people to the dwelling of Baroque masterpieces.

The only things going for this self-proclaimed panic film parody are decent production values and resplendent actresses. The movie itself, which is not really a parody of anything but objective a limp comedy, is tiring, and often dumb. The attempts at humor are usually mean-spirited, too, and usually made at the expense of the female characters (who the producers apparently want us to inspect at but not respect) .

Look, to carry over the rude parlance of the movie, I’m usually an easy lay with this sort of listless comedy: I don’t need or examine Shakespeare. Unprejudiced preserve things minimally racy, throw a few chuckles my scheme, and I’ll likely give it three stars and recommend it for some modest home entertainment. Nothing unfavorable with something laughable and fun, after all. But “Stan Helsing” is objective wearisome (the supreme sin of a creative work, in my book) and eye-rollingly boring. I’m guessing that comedy icon Leslie Nielsen is thankful he was only subjected to a fairly tiny role in this production.
I’m sorry to say all this, as the actors and folks late the camera seem like perfectly nice people in the 10-minute “making of” bonus feature (though the script makes me wonder about writer/director Bo Zenda), but I have to call it like I gape it. In the destroy, if you’re looking for a fun petite alarm comedy to score you in the mood for Halloween, let me quote one of Mr. Nielsen’s grand better comedies and say, “Nothing to behold here, travel along, nothing to stare here…”
It looks as if the cast had fun making this movie. Unfortunately, that fun doesn’t translate into a droll film. Because I received a preview copy, I watched the whole thing, but had I rented or bought the movie, I’d have given up after at most fifteen minutes. At least this diagram, I know that I’d have been upright.

The memoir, such as it is, involves four friends on their contrivance to a Halloween party. One of the friends is the title character (played by Steve Howey, who, it seems, is supposed to end “the six biggest movie monsters of all time” (according to the director) . As a result of various detours, none of which has any particular purpose except to wait on as fodder for jokes, the characters never earn it to the party but instead go through numerous allusions to dismay movies, some positive (as in the character “Fweddy,” a very minute parody of Freddy from A Nightmare on Elm Street) and some not so definite. (In case you’re wondering, the six monsters are Pinhead, Chucky, Jason, Freddy Kreuger, Leatherface, and Michael Myers.)
Unfortunately, the humor didn’t work for me, and even Leslie Nielsen fails to do this mess. Airplane! this isn’t. Rather, it’s strictly for those who contemplate sex jokes are automatically amusing and can maintain a movie.
Extras include: Commentary with the writer/director and two of the cast, a “making of” featurette, a few extended or deleted scenes, outtakes, the trailer, a level-headed gallery, and a storyboard gallery.

One of the better Ninja Films in recent times![]()
This review will be broken down into two sections: 1) The quality of the movie itself, and 2) The BD Disc quality.
First up, the film itself:
Plot (WARNING, MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!)
The time is present day, and somewhere in a rural region of Japan, a dojo carries on the tradition of the Koga Ninja by training students in the ninja arts. The head of the school, called the Soke, is nearing retirement age and must choose his successor. His top two students are fierce rivals and both are leading candidates to inherit the title of Soke. However, before the Soke can appoint his successor, one of the top two students disgraces himself in a training duel against his rival and is banished from the school. Predictably, the banished student becomes a freelance assassin, and we see him employ his ninja skills to deadly effect in a very cool assassination sequence.
We soon learn that the Soke is the keeper of some ancient Koga weapons which, legend has it, grants the wielder extraordinary abilities. The banished ninja comes calling to claim the weapons, but only after they’ve been shipped elsewhere for safekeeping. A vicious battle ensues between the bansihed ninja and the Soke, and at the conclusion of this battle, the chase is on for the Koga weapons, with the film culminating in a showdown between, you guessed it, the two rival ninja students. In this climactic battle, only one survives.
As an added bonus, the beautiful daughter of the Soke is thrown into the mix, but sadly, she serves as little more than window dressing. While she demonstrates some ninja skills, she is mostly helpless in a fight and is relegated to the role of damsel in distress more often than not, despite having trained all her life in the ninja arts. Though in her defense, she’s fairly useful with a bow and arrow, and she’s nice to look at.
The plot is better than most straight to video flicks, and in this case, serves as the thin thread tying the action scenes together, which are themselves well choreographed and well filmed.
The Action:
The action scenes feature the generous use of ninja weapons, including some impressive sword battles, as well as some decent hand to hand fight scenes. Aside from three fairly intense one-on-one fight scenes (all featuring liberal use of the katana), most of the battles feature one of the top ninjas in the film dispatching a multitude of lesser skilled opponents. The star of the film, Scott Adkins (caucasian actor and good guy ninja), demonstrates impressive martial arts and acrobatic ability, and it appears that he performed most of his own stunts. Keep your eyes open for a scene where he uses his acrobatic ability to evade an oncoming car. The ninja villain (asian actor and bad guy ninja, read into that what you will) also seemed to be well versed in martial arts and the use of ninja weapons, and I dare say that the fight scenes in this movie were more impressive than those in “Ninja Assassin” due in equal part to good choreography (far better than a Van Damme or Seagal flick, though don’t expect anything as energetic or creative as what you’d see from Hong Kong legends like Yuen Woo Ping, Corey Yuen, Jet Li or Jackie Chan), the actors in this film being experienced martial artists, and an editing style that lingers just long enough on the action (as opposed to the hyper-quick cut aways used in Ninja Assassins, which is the norm for a film featuring actors who aren’t very adept at performing the action featured in the film) so you can appreciate the skill of the actors pulling off the moves.
The Acting:
Nothing to write home about. The actors look and play their parts well enough as far as action films like this go, but none of them deliver performances that will leave a long lasting impression on you. That’s a good thing though, because the acting isn’t horrible either. It’s just good enough to move the story along, as threadbare and full of plotholes as it is.
The special effects:
There is liberal use of blood splattering, sometimes into the camera, when a katana is used to lethal effect. The blood didn’t look overly cartoony to me, but your tolerance/appreciation of these effects will vary depending on how much of a gorehound you are.
The pyrotechnics are good. Swords clashing generate sparks at the appropriate times, and I recall two separate vehicle explosions also being impressively done.
As for the BLU-RAY itself:
Picture quality on my 1080P Phillips is excellent, though not quite reference material. The image is generally sharp, colors are well delineated with little crush evident in day or night scenes, and there is very little to no film grain, leading me to believe the film was shot digitally, with some grain retained for a film-like appearance.
I can’t provide a detailed review of the audio, as I utilize only the speakers on my tv itself, but from what I heard, I can say the audio came across clearly, with dialogue being easy to pick up and louder foley effects, such as swords clashing, gun fire, and explosions, coming in crisply as well.
There is nothing in the way of special features, unless you count previews of other movies.
All in all, if you’re not too critical when it comes to martial arts themed movies, and you have an interest in seeing ninjas fighting ninjas and killing people in bloody fashion without an overuse of rapid cut editing, you may be pleasantly surprised. I recommend “Ninja” to viewers who are nostalgic for films like American Ninja (the first and best of the series) and Sho Kosugi films like Revenge of the Ninja.
Is Ninja worth a blind buy though? I’d say for the $15 price tag, it is if you’re a fan of violent and bloody ninja films. If you’re just a casual fan, a rental is the safest bet.
Either way, whether you rent or buy, there are far worse films in this genre out there, so happy viewing!

This movie is very good despite the poor reviews. I thought the acting was very believable as well as the story. The story was simple and seriously done, which to me was refreshing. I am so tired of martial arts movies with elaborate plots that end up leaving you more confused than when the movie started. To me martial arts movies tend to get too bogged down with heavy plot and cheapen the action. This was not the case with this film. Instead the director seem focus on the action and choreography and keep the story concise enough the keep the audience engaged. I thought this was the best movie about the Ninja I have ever seen, however, the new Ninja Assassin movie has not come out yet on Blu-ray. At least when it does I will have something to compare it to.

I am appalled by the negative reviews of this movie. Compared to Ninja Assassin, a big budget, over hyped movie, and over rated in amazon stars, this one, is better in many ways.
Ok so the story may be very typical. I used to play action figues as a child and would conjure up the same story, rival pupils, jealosy, and the love of his beautiful daughter….. anyways, this move on blu ray is sleek, fast paced (boy was ninja assassin sloooowww) , and down right badass. No excessive (unrealistic) blood like ninja assassin–although it was sweet, but they show you what it would really look like when someone gets chopped up by kitana. Oh and let me say the arsenal used is so sick!!
This movie had be out of my seat at least 4 times in excitement, all the while i am saying to myself how under the radar this movie was and how overly blown away i was by its production value. Sure there are no superstars, but the acting is far from terrible. Besides, its all about the action here.
I can confidently say this is the best action movie of 2010 so far and maybe even 2009 and beyond… definately worth $17 for the blu ray.

After a long (13 years) absence since her first motion record (1988′s Elvira, Mistress of the Dusky) the wise cracking dread hostess is befriend. This movie pays fiendishly fun homage to the customary Corman/Poe, Vincent Impress flicks of the 1950′s. Complete with dramatic sets, secret passages, curses, wall entombment and even a pit complete with stout swinging (and actually perilous unprejudiced ask Elvira) pendulum.
While Elvira fans will catch this gothic romp a hilarious hay trot, non Elvira fans are obvious to earn something to devour. Besides Elvira’s gravity defying pair this movie actually proves to contain up against today’s market of CGI laden movies, with Hollywood large names and multi million dollar budgets.

When I first rented this over the weekend, I opinion it was abominable. I expected something more like Elvira’s Mistress of the Murky movie, which is fantastic. However, as I started looking at the special features of this film, I realized what the film was trying to effect and the budget that they worked with and it was actually a very qualified film when looked at this intention.

Haunted Hills is a parody of ragged Vincent Price/Roger Corman movies. If you are a fan of old-school dismay, this film will form so noteworthy more sense for you. Because I had not seen these movies when watching the film I was ready to trash it even though I generally care for Elvira!
My only qualm was the scenes with Elvira and the stable-hand, Adrian. They wanted to beget a joke about dubbed movies (and coincidentally the actor did not suppose a word of English) so he spoke all of his lines in his native Romanian tongue and while it was silly in the first scene they had together, I got frustrated with it by the extinguish of the movie. I kept hoping he would suddenly begin speaking in English though I was amused that they kept the bit going through the whole film (then I learned that there was a worthy reason for it!) .

I contemplate allotment of the contrast between this film and the last one is that the first film probably had a higher budget. Some of the actors were working on no budget/low budget as a favor to Cassandra and the director. Having financial attend can go a long method into the quality of a film.
That being said, this has got plenty of Elvrira and lots of boob jokes and boob shots. The performance by the actor playing Dr. Bradley Bradley was very generous and I also enjoyed the actress playing Lady Hellsebus. I also liked the costumes, though there were different period styles combined together.
So, if you are looking for a very contemporary horror-esque comedy you are not going to accept this movie. It’s very cliche because it really is trying to be very cliche. Once you understand that, the movie will be so distinguished more exquisite.

Inspired by the sage from Edgar Allan Poe, gore yarn Lucio Fulci’s “The Dark Cat” is a refreshing change from the sorts of Italian dread films I’m customary to seeing. It almost feels like a Hammer or Amicus production, or an attempt at one rather, and as a expansive fan of those types of awe films, I was very relieved to witness that. Fragment of the feeling surely comes from the English setting, and another from one of the main stars of the film, actor Patrick Magee. However, the account plays a fraction in this too, as this film is actually about the animated spot more than it is about the gore. In fact, I’d say “The Dusky Cat” is fairly serene in the gore department compared to other Italian fear films. The performances range from quite safe to adequate, and the music is blooming icy, so overall I can easily say this is among the better Italian anxiety films I’ve seen, but, as I’ve said, it’s more because it feels a bit like British terror. If you are into the more typical Italian alarm films, perhaps you will not like “The Dusky Cat” so powerful. If you are a fan of Hammer and Amicus, this is a profitable segway into Italian dismay. The DVD from Anchor Bay claims to be fully restored (though I guess that doesn’t mean a flawless characterize), and the film is presented in widescreen. Also included are the theatrical trailer and a bio on Lucio Fulci. I can honestly say I like “The Shaded Cat” and it is worth checking out, though there are detached going to be questions you wish it had answered. It IS Italian fear, after all. Serene, this is among their best in my notion.
The Dim Cat released in 1981 is one of Lucio Fulci’s lesser known efforts. The Sunless Cat was released in a time when the splatter era of Lucio Fulci was upon us. If its gore you are looking for you won’t come by very worthy here, while the Dusky Cat does have some violence it’s not very gory at all; the couple of gore scenes we acquire are very tame actually. I wouldn’t even call them gore scenes.
With The Dismal Cat Fulci focuses more on suspense; while we all have our beget thought I mediate a lot of people went into this movie expecting a gorefest. Lucio Fulci was a director who could develop his movies arrive out creepier than they should have, but it’s the gore is what really got fans talking. The Unlit Cat could have aged more of the red stuff; while the movie wasn’t poor it honest never had that creepy feel that some of Fulci’s other movies from this era did.

The cessation up of the eyes is a Lucio Fulci trademark; when mature legal that shot can be really effective and gain a scene very eerie. But here in The Shaded Cat, Fulci goes into stop up of the eyes overload. It seemed every other shot was a discontinuance up of the eyes. Honestly it can come by rather annoying after a while. The spy of the movie is well done for the most part; Sergio Salvati was the cinematographer and he worked with Fulci on some of his most current flicks of the 80s.
Lucio Fulci and Sergio Salvati are able to design a ample gape visually and are able to perform some scenes a runt creepier than maybe they should have been. The Unlit Cat really wasn’t a dreadful movie it’s your typical Lucio Fulci movie only without the gore. There were some decent moments of suspense and the movie is actually well made for the most fraction. At times The Gloomy Cat can shuffle and there are moments when it can be a bit dreary, but overall The Dusky Cat is delicious.
If you aren’t a fan of Lucio Fulci your best bet is probably to skip this, but if you are a fan or a some what fan of Fulci The Dim Cat is worth a gaze. Unbiased don’t interrogate any gore because you will be disappointed; while The Dark Cat lacks in some areas it is delicious for the most section. Not one of Lucio Fulci’s best, but not one his worst. The Dim Cat is a decent survey and has it’s moments.
The DVD from Blue Underground is the same sincere disc as the Anchor Bay version. So if you already hold the DVD there is no reason to consume another one.

The DVD is presented in a provocative and glittering print of the astonishing cinematography of Robert Surtees. One of the grand camera men who’s credits include 1962′s “Mutiny On The Bounty”, “Quo Vadis”, “Raintree County”, and “The Last Represent Display”. He captures breathtaking shots of little and teaming Naples and the enormous sunny vistas of Capri. In his hands this stunning section of Italy becomes a fine widescreen postcard that beckons the viewer into the record.
The procure by Alessandro Cicognini (Indiscretion of an American Wife) and Carlo Savina is pure Italian gold and fits the laughable proceedings perfectly. And the addition of the song Tu Vuo Fa L’Americano in Sophia’s club act is apt. This approved Italian song of the 1950′s resurfaced effectively in “The Talented Mr. Ripley”. It is fun to spy how Sophia interprets the song for the tourists on Capri.

Clark Gable, cast as stodgy American Michael Hamilton is gruff and amusing as he first battles and then falls for Sophia. He has many standout scenes with her and with child actor, Marietto. In particular is the scene where he and Sophia mix killer drinks for each other at the bar.
Marietto as Sophia’s nephew Nando is a exiguous laughable whirlwind. He is astounding in his naturalness in his scenes with Loren. A skinny ball of ingenuity and energy he is particularly comic when he is trying to accumulate his draw with both Loren and Gable.
The titanic Italian director Vittorio De Sica nearly runs off with the cameras, site and crew in his performance as Sophia’s lawyer. He works so well with her, and why not, he was her director in “Gold of Naples”, “Two Women” and the astounding “Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.” His speech in the courtroom scene is a standout.
All this unbelievable talent surrounds Sophia Loren in what is really her point to. She is pure magic as Lucia Curcio, a woman of passionate worship of life and family. She dominates the record as well she should because it is her talent as an actress and her extraordinary beauty that brought her to this point in her career. Her comedic turns and exercise of Italian gestures turn this into a joyous romp for both her and the audience.
After viewing “It Started In Naples” you may accumulate yourself singing. Tu Vuo Fa L’Italiano.
This is my accepted movie with Sofia. She is at her most gorgeous and this is her most charming role. I am a tremendous fan and I hold there will never be anyone as sensual with an accent that can actually command, act and acquire everyones attention the contrivance she did in this movie. The young boy Nando is also charming and captures the essence of Italian childhood in that time. I recomend this movie as a must survey for anyone who was ever attracted to Sofia and Italy. The scenery is attractive and the tale is attractive. Gawk this movie and you’ll want to go visit Italy.

A loan shark from Florida, who loves movies and winds up in Hollywood on a collection job, decides to take a shot at the movie business while he’s there, in “Get Shorty,” directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. Dark humor and richly textured characters drive this story of Chili Palmer (John Travolta), the shylock from Miami Beach who aspires to a life beyond keeping a book for thugs, in this faithful adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel. When circumstances take him to Las Vegas to look for one Leo Devoe (David Paymer), a dry-cleaner in debt up to his eyeballs who blew town after an airline scam, Chili goes on to Hollywood to do a favor for the casino operator who tipped him off as to Leo’s whereabouts. The “favor” is contacting film director Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman) who has payment overdue on a note issued to him by the casino. Zimm has made a name for himself (at least in his own mind) by directing horror movies; but he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed. Ultimately, Chili gets involved with Zimm and actress Karen Flores (Rene Russo), who has starred in some of Zimm’s horror flicks, as well as with two time Academy Award nominee Martin Weir (Danny DeVito), the “shorty” of the title. Chili is finally in his element, but his Miami Beach days are not yet behind him; there’s still some settling up to do according to one Ray “Bones” Barboni (Dennis Farina), owner of the book kept by Chili in Florida. Travolta not only goes the distance here, but creates a definitive character in Chili; even as Sean Connery is James Bond, and Basil Rathbone is Sherlock Holmes, Travolta “is” Chili Palmer. With nuance and charisma, he does this guy from the inside out. He has the look and the mannerisms; he walks the walk and talks the talk. And nobody in the history of the cinema has used a cigarette as a prop better than he does in this movie. It’s a commanding, Oscar-worthy performance, every bit as good (possibly even better) than the role of Vincent he created in “Pulp Fiction.” His presence simply dominates the film, and he’s up against some stiff competition, because this movie is filled with great characters. Not only Hackman, who does a terrific job as Zimm, but Russo, who sizzles, and DeVito, who adds some real flair as the “Movie Star,” and Farina, whose toughness and lack of wit make him a memorable character. Also exceptional are Delroy Lindo, as Bo Catlett, a thug and wanna-be movie producer, James Gandolfini, as “Bear,” a stuntman who works with Catlett, and Jon Gries as Ronnie, a “Hollywood” style tough guy who also works with Catlett. Sonnenfeld did a great job of bringing this world of “Get Shorty” to life. The story is interesting and delivered with outstanding dialogue and plenty of action, all of which Sonnenfeld keeps moving at a perfect pace and with impeccable timing. This is one thoroughly enjoyable, funny movie that absolutely begs for a sequel. In recommending it, I have to borrow one of Chili Palmer’s best lines: “Look at me.” Because that says it all. This is one movie you don’t want to miss.
Witty, funny movie gets the “special” treatment![]()
It takes a loan shark leading the way to make Hollywood honest. “Get Shorty” returns in a new 2 disc “Collector’s Edition” DVD just in time for the sequel “Too Cool” which will be premiering in theaters in March. Translating Elmore Leonard’s novels to the screen can be a tricky business luckily both screenwriter Scott Frank and director Barry Sonnenfeld are both up to the task with an inventive dark comedic film. Chili Palmer (John Travolta) heads west to collect a debt from down-and-out B-movie producer Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman). When Harry can’t pay, Chili opts to help him make a movie about, well, Chili Palmer. The catch is that Chili and Harry need a star to make their movie viable. Chili quickly finds that the film business shares a lot in common with the world of organized crime. Chili romances B-Movie queen Karen Flores (Rene Russo) an ex- of Harry’s and persuades film star Martin Weir (Danny DeVito) to star in the film but not before running into a Cadillac of very funny mishaps along the way. Featuring a great performances from Dennis Farina as the clueless Ray `Bones’ Barboni, Travolta, Hackman, Russo, DeVito and a pre-Sopranos James Gandolfini, “Get Shorty” positively sparkles with wit and energy.
Sporting a new high definition transfer “Get Shorty” looks simply marvelous. With a sharp looking transfer showing a minimum of digital artifacts and no analog flaws, “Get Shorty” deserves the deluxe treatment. The image has amazing depth and an image sharper than Chili’s aim. The colors practically leap out from the screen brighter than Harry Zimm’s blindingly white teeth from the moment the pink and blue titles pop up on the screen until the moment we hear “cut” at the end. With blacks richer and darker than Chili’s stolen coat, MGM has done a superb job of translating this modern classic to DVD. The crystal clear sound comes across with more presence than B-Movie queen Karen Flores’ screams.
Extras are exceptionally good in this “Special Edition”. It’s like having seconds of a terrific desert; while no one really needs it, it’s great to have just the same. We get a number of notable extras as part of this rich meal. The second disc has three featurettes on different aspects of the film, the deleted “Graveyard Scene”, outtakes, the “Get Shorty” party reel, a documentary from Bravo Channel on the making of the movie and a sneak peak at “Be Cool”. “Get Shorty: Look at Me” opens the book on how Elmore Leonard came up with the plot for “Get Shorty” and developed the idea. DeVito, Travolta, Hackman, Russo, Sonnenfeld and other key cast and crew participate in this featurette on the production of the film. Full of clips from the movie to illustrate the points made throughout the featurette, it’s a great summation of the greatness of this film. It’s a 30 minute love fest reminding fans why they love this movie so much. The 20 minute “Get Shorty: Wise Guys and Dolls” focuses on the fun, complex characters of the movie. “The Graveyard Scene” featurette allows Sonnenfeld to comment on the single deleted scene of the movie included the hilarious, well, graveyard scene. Featuring a funny cameo with Ben Stiller, Sonnenfeld clearly regretted cutting the scene but Sonnenfeld couldn’t find a place for sequence where it fit. The behind-the-scenes stuff and interviews last longer than the actual scene itself. “Going Again” features footage from outtakes and a discussion from Sonnenfeld about the technique of using long takes, pulling out the best bits and putting it together to make magic. The sneak peak for “Be Cool” promises that the sequel to “Get Shorty” promises to be as funny as the first film. Set in the music business, it may not be more than a promo piece for the film but it gives viewers enough of a taste to rope `em in.
Bravo’s “Page to Screen” documentary featuring Peter Gallagher features plenty of interviews with critics, other writers and focuses as much on how Elmore Leonard comes up with the material in his books, writes them and, once again, takes us behind-the-scenes of the production of the movie. The real treat is hearing from the real Chili Palmer discussing the “reel” Chili Palmer and Leonard’s character. The “Party Reel” mainly consists of bits and piece of cut footage and behind-the-scenes stuff nothing earth shattering or all that funny. In addition to the “Get Shorty” theatrical trailer and we get two promos one for “Fargo” and one for “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”. My only complaint is the MGM “promo” opener that they put on ALL of their DVDs. It’s annoying and, unfortunately, there’s no way to pass it by. It’s a pretty minor issue but the fact that it’s on all of their DVDs makes it a real pain.
A dry, witty commentary by Barry Sonnenfeld highlights this disc. The only drawback is the lack of participation of Travolta, Hackman, Russo and DeVito. I realize they have busy schedules but it would have been a real highlight and perfect addition to this DVD.
A hip, funny comedy that continues to deliver in spades, “Get Shorty” looks terrific, sounds great and has some terrific special features. This is an example of a re-release that’s worth upgrading. Definitely worth owing on DVD and purchasing a second time if you love the movie. This IS the version to own.

“Get Shorty ” in my opinion is one of the most hilarious send ups of the Hollywood movie industry ever put to film.Director, Barry Sonnenfeld and writer, Elmore Leonard have put their talents together to create a satirical film, which ‘takes no prisoners’ in its look at the underhanded ways, that folks wheel and deal to get movies made.The film centers on a charismatic mobster (John Travolta), who while on a trip to L.A., decides to switch careers. He wants to make movies!This is not as far fetched as it seems. Apparently being a movie producer isn’t that far of a jump from being a loan shark or racketeer! Along the way Chilly meets up with with a schlock movie producer, a scream queen, a L.A. hood and his henchman, another mobster from Miami and finally the ‘Shorty’ (a self-involved, superstar actor)of the film’s title. All of them underestimate Chilly and think he is just a dumb hood, who can be conned out of some major, illegal money waiting in a locker at the L.A. airport. But Chilly seems to know all the right moves and plays everyone at their own game.Writer, Elmore Leonard wrote this fast paced, witty story after experiencing a real life, frustrating job of trying to write a script for vertically challenged actor, Dustin Hoffman… Revenge must be sweet, because it inspired a great piece of comic writing.The cast of actors in this movie is wonderful. Normally, I’m not the biggest John Travolta fan, but his take on mobster, Chilly Palmer is electrifying. Travolta plays the character with a swagger, confindence, and a smile that is sheer perfection! Gene Hackman is also hilarious as the sleaziest of sleazy Hollywood producers. This guy would sell out his own mother if it ment getting a piece of the gross!.Finally, Danny DeVito just makes this movie with his send up of every spoiled rotten, self-indulgent Hollywood actor that could ever come to mind. Kudos should also go for great, comic supporting roles from James Gandolfini and Dennis Farina.For an evening of some very funny Hollywood satire, I recommend you to get…”Get Shorty”!
