I didn’t know what to examine after the opening 8-minute tracking shot spanned a Chinese factory’s worthy length. “Manufactured Landscapes” is about the work of Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky, but this film is unlike any other I’ve seen on the subject of an artist and his work. Burtynsky has made a name -and many pleasing photographs- in “industrial landscapes”. Struck by the ways in which unusual humanity has transformed Earth’s landscape, he seeks out “the largest industrial incursions” he can collect. His photographs are absorbing and surprisingly splendid representations of the heart of modernization and globalization.

Director Jennifer Baichwal accompanied Burtynsky on several trips to Asia, observing the artist at work and allowing a movie camera to ogle the industrial landscape as he does. This gives the photographs context that they don’t normally have, and Burtynsky takes the opportunity to comment in a spare narration. Baichwal wisely subscribes to the same philosophy as Burtynsky in never interpreting or demystifying the photos. I was pleasantly surprised to seek how many of Burtynsky’s photographs are presented in the film and amazed at how well the movie footage supports and directs the viewer into them.
After photographing extraction industries for 10 years, Burtynsky turned his attention to China, where all those materials coalesce and are turned into products we steal. We go with him as he documents the hastily changing landscapes at a factory, a village that recycles “e-waste”, a shipyard, coal mine, the unbelievable Three Gorges Dam, and China’s fastest-growing city, Shanghai. A short chase to a shipwrecking beach in Bangladesh is particularly incredible. “Manufactured Landscapes” showed me things I had never seen before. And it is narrate impartial to prove them without judgment.

The DVD (Zeitgeist 2007) : Bonus features include 5 additional scenes, a theatrical trailer, and 3 featurettes. “Discussion with the Director and Edward Burtynsky” (19 min) is very worthwhile. Richard Goddard interviews Baichwal and Burtynsky about questions of authorship, perspective, what the film brings to the photos, and touches on the controversial aspects of the Burtynsky’s photos. “Al Gore at the Nashville Film Festival” (9 min) records the weak Vice President’s speech as he presents Baichwal with an award. “Mini-Interview with the Cinematographer/Collaborator” (5 min) talks with Peter Mettler about working with both a photographer and a director. Subtitles are available for the film in English SDH.
Jennifer Baichwal’s documentary is a companion to noted artist Edward Burtynsky’s large-scale photographs depicting man’s violent alteration of natural environments. Burtynsky achieved notoriety when he documented mine tailings, rail cuts, quarries and oil refineries, mostly located in North America. Baichwal shows Burtynsky at a lecture and exhibition of this material then travels to Asia with him to document the process of creating art based on China’s industrial revolution. Manufactured Landscapes opens with an astounding tracking shot from the sidelines of a factory so grand that the shot lasts eight minutes. There are elegant views of recycling yards and mountains of electronic refuse. Manufactured Landscapes takes us to the dwelling of the Three Gorges Dam, 50% bigger than any previous such project, and to the ruins of the eleven cities that had to be demolished to produce its construction possible. It’s a hasten of the soul as a man goes home in his heart, in this dramatization of the proper sage of Alvin Straight, who drove a lawn mower over three-hundred miles through the plot of Iowa and into Wisconsin, to perceive his brother, a stroke victim with whom he had not spoken for ten years. “The Straight Fable,” directed by David Lynch, recounts the record of Alvin (Richard Farnsworth), who status out to study his brother, Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton), upon hearing of his stroke. When a young man asks him what the worst thing is about being former, he replies, “Remembering when you were young.” Richard Farnsworth gives the performance of a lifetime as Alvin, this stubborn, prideful man, who has learned humility with age, and you can perceive the wisdom of his years in his eyes. Farnsworth connects with the audience from the beginning, aptly conveying the yearning of a soul in need of atonement, and the determination of the man to execute his amends. Sissy Spacek, also, gives a terrifically nuanced performance as Rose, the “tiresome” daughter who lives daily with demons of her believe. That the members of the Academy failed to nominate her for best-supporting actress for her work here is nothing short of criminal; her Rose is a splendid section of work. David Lynch, as well, has done a great job of bringing Alvin’s yarn to the mask. He has woven a rich visual and emotional tapestry, all poignantly delivered with a gentle hand. Beautifully photographed, the lush vistas of the Midwest contemplate Alvin’s spot of mind, underscoring the deeper meanings of what is really a spiritual fling, during which the past mingles with the demonstrate. Lynch has taken a wistful, almost poetic reach throughout, which, together with the legend is reminiscent of Ingmar Bergman’s “Wild Strawberries.” The scene in which Alvin finally meets up with Lyle is perfectly and touchingly executed, and is one of the most memorable scenes in the movie. The supporting cast includes James Cada (Danny), Everett McGill (Tom), Barbara E. Robertson (Deer Woman), John Farley (Thorvald), and Kevin P. Farley (Harold) . With an artistic hand, Lynch has crafted an unforgettable film. “The Straight Account” is Alvin’s tale, but the bound belongs to us; a reminder of what is really well-known in life, and the needs we all fragment at one time or another. It’s an animated movie that will touch you and develop you reflect, as well; and as far as I’m concerned, that’s about as apt as it gets.
With ‘The Straight Story’ David Lynch has weaved together a subtle, animated epic about age, regret, and family. The record is of Alvin Straight, a 73 year musty man who has seen most of what life has to dish out and learns that his brother suffered a stroke. With abominable eyes and no license, he sets out on a breeze on a riding lawnmower to discover his brother, who he hasn’t spoken to in ten years.
What I loved most about this movie is the simplicity; of the tale, the characters, the filming. Yet within that classic style is a movie that is incredibly racy. The stories that Alvin has to negate about his life are saddening, touching, and almost repulsive. He talks about being conventional, about fighting in World War II, and about his regrets of not speaking to his brother. He runs into quite a few people along the design who back him out, and their stories contribute to a beautifully crafted script.
Richard Farnsworth is convincing in the role of Alvin. His abilities are most especially outlined in the dim tone of his issue, and the contemplate of regret and hope in his eyes. It is rare that I have grown to respect and admire a character so great. David Lynch’s direction is not dismal or creepy like his other works, but carefully and nicely photographed in expansive harmony with the script. The cinematography is smoothe, and the extended takes reveal his abilities as a director and the actors abilities as well.

This film is done in a classic manner, and the results are bewitching in a rare plan. I sincerely hopes this film eventually gets the recognition it deserves.

From first frame to last, I had no idea what was going to come next in this thought-provoking film from Canada. Others here may attempt to sum up the plot, but the dream-like, stream of conscious connections that lead from one scene to the next are what I found fascinating. The movement is back and forth in time, until it’s hardly clear what the “present” is, while one assumption after another about characters and their motivations is turned on its head. What you think is true turns out to be only sort of so, and each revelation pulls you in even farther.
This is a movie for grown-ups, asking questions about the post-9/11 world we live in and wanting us to make sense of the fear and confusion around terrorism. Characters are not totally clear cut. A schoolboy, his teacher, his uncle, his grandfather, and his dead parents all draw our sympathy at times and then behave in ways that make us question their judgment.
Meanwhile, as a story about the boys’ parents, which may or may not be true, explodes into chat rooms on the Internet, it ignites a fury of public discourse that takes on a manic life of its own. The social environment, as mediated by digital technology, becomes a kind of Bedlam, where reason becomes completely unmoored. Without giving too much away, the film finally finds a small respite of calm for its characters to regard each other with a degree of trust, while paranoia and pandemonium rage on around them. Well worth watching, “Adoration” portrays challenging ideas about the world we live in and argues for a measure of sanity to be found in connections between people who have little in common but their need to be at peace with each other.

I am new to this (Canadian?) director’s work, so I can’t compare this movie to his previous ones. I don’t know if it is better or not, but I do know that it is quite good enough to be worth my time.
A high school student is encouraged by his French teacher (who also does the Drama group) to enact and develop a scenario, which is based in a true story, as if it was his own: the boy’s (Palestinian?) father had put explosives into his mother’s travel bag on a plane to Israel, while she was pregnant with the boy. The bomb had not exploded. The boy, Simon, reads `his story’ to his class and then on the net.
The `drama’ grows out of hand and proliferates in chat rooms. Simon lives with the fiction and makes wild statements. He gets feedback from people who were on the real plane that had been supposed to blow up. He is called by Neo- Nazis who proudly parade their Holocaust denial tattooed on their skin. He is called by a young woman who makes her grandmother show her camp number tattoo on her forearm. Young people debate the theory of terrorism.
In real life Simon lives with his uncle. His parents had died in a car accident. The grandfather had not been happy with his blond violinist daughter marrying a dark foreigner (a Lebanese?). To Simon, he calls his father a `killer’.
There is a real dimension of mystery. We do not know how much of the wild story is true. That’s why any review must stay away from being too explicit with the plot.
The narration is slow, maybe slower than necessary. There are flashbacks and sidesteps.
Simon is the center, but more and more, his teacher moves into focus. She turns out to be more involved than expected.
If you want a simple tale moving from A to B with a clear message, this is not for you. If you can stand coming out of it without the feeling that you have been told how the world works, then you may appreciate the contemplative pace of this movie.
Another Egoyan masterpiece![]()
By now I fully expect that every new Egoyan film will be a masterpiece. He is sort of like Shakespeare in this regard. This film is riveting to the point that I was literally hanging on every word in every scene. Egoyan writes his own films and then produces and directs them. It is his writing which is so superb, so consistently superb, from one film to the next. His actors pick up on the nuances and the finished product is pretty much always nothing less than astonishing. Certainly Egoyan’s last seven or so films fit this description.
The film is reminiscent of “Ararat” with the long interrogation at the airport. It is like “Exotica” with the unfoldment of rather intricate relationships. And all the main characters and most of the minor characters exhibit an intensity that is quite palpable and keeps reminding me that Egoyan has, of course, done it again. If you have not seen some of his other films, you are in for a very special set of experiences indeed. In my humble opinion he stands alone at the top of his craft.

I saw this film when it was first released in 1960 and saw it again recently, charmed as before by the sage line and the worthy acting under Fred Zinnemann’s shiny direction. Here’s the situation: Ida (Deborah Kerr) and Paddy (Robert Mitchum) Carmody and son Sean (Michael Anderson, Jr.) are sheep drovers in Australia in the 1920s, proceeding from one job to the next. Ida and son yearn to resolve down permanently somewhere (anywhere, really) whereas Paddy prefers itinerant roaming. Along the procedure, they encounter Rupert Venneker (Peter Ustinov), a used sea captain with aristocratic sensibilities. Most of the film focuses on their tenure on the Halstead ranch during which they become friends with Mrs. Firth (Glynis Johns), an innkeeper to whom Venneker is coyly attracted. During the course of the film, not mighty happens, really. Its grand charm is generated by the developing relationships between and among the lead characters.
Others have praised this film for apt reasons of their contain. Here are mine. First, there is huge and authentic human interest in the differences between Ida’s and Paddy’s contradictory definitions of “home.” For lack of better terms, between settling down and arresting on. Also, in collaboration with Zinnemann, Jack Hildyard enriches the development of the yarn with cinematography which is compellingly, indeed exquisitely appropriate to that time and set. Finally, all of the lead actors seem perfectly matched with the roles they play…especially Mitchum.

Briefly, I now portion some thoughts about him, first because he invests Paddy with a wholesome appeal which was for me unexpected, given the Mitchum persona as in Night of the Hunter (1955) and Home from the Hill (also 1960) and then, years later, in his portrayals of Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe in Farewell, My Handsome (1975) and The Titanic Sleep (1978) . His understated, highly-disciplined portrayal of Paddy is comparable with Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of Warren Schmidt. Although Kerr and Johns received an Academy Award nomination, Mitchum did not. I have always plan he was under-appreciated as an actor.
Set in the 1920s and about a family of Irish itinerant sheepherders, this film has panoramic views of Australia (cinematography by Jack Hildyard), a suited script, and a diverse and absorbing cast; the sheep also are terrific, and there are many glimpses of kangaroos, koalas and more, all spot to an upbeat get by Dimitri Tiomkin. The film also shows the backbreaking labor of shearing the sheep, and the hard life and hard drinking of the people who do it.
It has its fraction of drama, poignancy, and humor, the latter usually thanks to Peter Ustinov, who puts in another memorable performance as a British wanderer who is always able to extricate himself from romantic entanglements.
Deborah Kerr shines as Ida, the tough but sensitive wife who stands by her man through thick and thin (mostly thin) . Robert Mitchum is beneficial as her irresponsible husband, as is Michael Anderson Jr. as their son, and Glynis Johns adds her irrepressible charm as a pub owner.

Though not quite on the level of director Fred Zinnemann’s best work (like “High Noon”, “A Man for all Seasons”, and “Day of the Jackal”), it serene has his masterful touch, and is a lovely film, well worth viewing.
It was nominated for Best Actress, Represent, Director, Adapted Screenplay, and Supporting Actress (Johns), losing out to Elizabeth Taylor in the first category, and “The Apartment” and “Elmer Gantry” in the rest.
“The Sundowners” is solid entertainment from one of the gigantic directors of the 20th century, and total running time is 133 minutes.

Every 4th of July I peruse “1776,” the musical that has our Founding Fathers singing and dancing their arrangement to Independency, and every time John and Abagail Adams order goodbye to each other (“Till Then” and “Yours, Yours, Yours”), I glean choked up. William Daniels has his role of a lifetime as John Adams, the wrong and disliked Massachusetts delegate to the Continental Congress who is the most interested advocate of independence (“Piddle, Twiddle and Settle”) . Virginia Vestoff plays his wife Abigail, and their exchanges are based on the “Dearest Friend” correspondences they wrote to each other during the crucial summer of 1776. However, the most unforgettable performance in “1776″ comes from Howard Da Silva as Dr. Benjamin Franklin. The actor, who played movie villains for years, manages to whisper not only Franklin’s wit but also his firm concept in the current accelerate of “Americans.” Ken Howard plays Thomas Jefferson and joins with Adams and Franklin in the show’s two cutest numbers, “But, Mr. Adams” and “The Egg.” I have never cottoned “The Lees of Ancient Virginia,” the song sung by Richard Henry Lee (Ron Holgate) and where every lyric line ends with “LY,” but at the other slay of the spectrum is the chilling “Molasses to Rum to Slaves,” the song about the Triangle Trade sung by South Carolina’s Edward Rutledge (John Cullum) . The ensemble cast brings the Second Continental Congress alive, with Roy Poole as Stephen Hopkins, David Ford as John Hancock and William Hansen as Caesar Rodney standing out. Most of the cast members were in the Tony Award winning fresh Broadway cast, although Blythe Danner replaces Betty Buckley as Martha Jefferson (“He Plays the Violin”) .

Peter Stone’s book is remarkably lawful in relating the historical events; the biggest error a historian would point to is that John Dickinson (Donald Enrage), did not reveal up the day of the crucial vote so that Pennsylvania would not extinguish Independence. But Broadway and Hollywood must be allowed to gain things more dramatic. What makes “1776″ so astounding is how it teaches history while being so attractive. The opening of the film, where the tirade by Mr. Adams against the do nothing Continental Congress is interrupted by the collective Founding Fathers jumping up and singing “Sit Down, John,” sets the tone and Peter H. Hunt’s film delivers throughout. The show’s best moment comes in “Is Anybody There? ” when John Adams, all alone in the still chamber, dreams of the pomp and pageantry of a free America.
I also have the laserdisc version, which runs 176 minutes and includes 35 minutes of material originally crop from the film, including the song “Icy, Considerate Men” and alternative shots in several sequences. While the quality of the additional material is in very shaded shape, fans of “1776″ will hold what they can obtain. Hopefully the complete film can be restored before we procure to the DVD version (hint, hint, hint) . Granted, the concept of a musical about the Declaration of Independence seems bizarre; I once blew off a chance to search for “1776″ on stage because I concept the view was unimaginative. But this is a satisfactory musical that makes the time and issues reach alive, so that even belief we obviously know the outcome, we are enthralled because it looks like Mr. Adams will never bag his Declaration adopted. If you are looking for a film to search for each 4th of July, “1776″ is the one.
First, let me say that I’m not a tremendous fan of movie musicals. However, I’ve always made an exception for 1776. I swear it’s my abiding interest in history, and in the common presentation of history, that keeps me coming befriend to this film. For the uninitiated, 1776 is the anecdote of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and was first presented on Broadway in the leisurely 1960s. Plot in Philadelphia in June and early July of 1776, the action centers around John Adams’s attempt to pick up a reluctant Continental Congress to exclaim the 13 colonies independent of Tremendous Britain. Adams, and his allies (including Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson), is opposed at every step by the conservatives in Congress, led by John Dickinson of Pennsylvania. Although we know the ending, it is to scriptwriter Peter Stone’s credit that we realize things may have turned out rather differently.
My first recorded version of this movie was taped off of a local television area that had drastically edited it for length and inform. When I finally got around to buying the VHS version of 1776, I was amazed at what had been left out, particularly when it came to the earthier dialogue. Imagine my reaction to the unusual DVD director’s carve edition of this musical; it was like watching a completely unique movie. Bridging scenes that had been edited out now provide a nearly seamless account traipse, and the musical number “Frosty, Considerate Men” has been restored, providing for greater balance between the conservatives and radicals in Congress.

The cast, a number of whom reprise their roles from the Broadway production, is nearly flawless. William Daniels IS John Adams, hard-headed, driven, passionate, “putrid and disliked”. Howard da Silva is equally effective as Benjamin Franklin, elder statesman and earthy man-of-the-world, while the rest of the actors do very well by their characters. Of necessity, the film’s emphasis is on Congress, and therefore on the male of the species; women are puny to two roles–Martha Jefferson, played by Blythe Danner, and Abigail Adams, played by Virginia Vestoff. Of Danner’s role, there is runt to say beyond the fact that the actress is a intellectual veil presence. Vestoff, on the other hand, has a rather more big role as John Adams’s wife, confidant, and sounding board. The film effectively portrays the correspondence between John and Abigail, a partnership that was, in many ways, distinguished in American history.
Director Peter Hunt keeps things animated along at a moving trail, propelled by the music of Sherman Edwards, who also wrote the lyrics. It’s hard to grasp a approved song, but two stand out in my mind–the chilling “Molasses to Rum to Slaves” and the poignant “Mamma, Explore Entertaining”. The faded underlines the flawed nature of the American Experiment–that a unique nation established on the principle that “all men are created equal” would also retain hundreds of thousands of people in chains. The latter song brings home the fact that while Congress engages in endless debates, men (and boys) are dying on the field of battle.
I could dwell at some length on the historical inaccuracies embodied in this movie–the character of Believe Wilson, for one, and that of Richard Henry Lee, for another. However, purism aside, what 1776 makes determined is objective what a finish hurry thing independence really was, that there was, indeed, a valuable proportion of Americans (and their representatives) who wished to remain true to the British crown. Better yet, the Founding Fathers are portrayed mot as marble men, but as the passionate, flawed, flesh-and-blood individuals they were.

The Future of Science Fiction 5*
I have seen the future of science fiction, and it is excellent, at least if this film has the influence it so richly deserves. Written science fiction is about so worthy more than the station opera and bug eyed monster tales and post-apocalyptic gotterdammerung that accomplish the bulk of filmic “sci fi” that it is friendly to glimpse the film world catching up. There have always been a few “exact” science fiction movies that demolish the mold — “A Boy and His Dog”, “2001″, “Blade Runner”, even “Charly” (though that butchered the unique fantastic Daniel Keys novella, the intent was there) near to mind. But most of those refer aid to classic science fiction written works. What is expansive about “Sleep Dealer” is that it takes the vision of obliging written SF, with an current site and theme, mixes it with the vocabulary of the special effects driven films that dominate the science fiction theater, and comes out with something astounding. I hope this is an indication that the novel generation of writers and directors (and not honest Hollywood budget types, but independent and “foreign” cinematographers) have absorbed this vocabulary to the point where it is simply another tool in their repertoir, and will continue to exercise it judiciously to whisper a modern generation of adult science fiction tales.

Sleep Dealer combines a cyberpunk vision of the approach future with a distinct social vision and a dynamite residence and characterizations. Memo (Fernando Pena, with a tilde) is a young man in a remote and dusty Oaxacan village, Santa Ana del Rio. His father struggles on to raise crops on the ancestral location since a gringo corporation dammed the local river … going to beg a few liters of water, he and Memo are faced with a remote control, talking gun at the fence. Memo dreams of leaving the dusty town, and has a Rube Goldberg radio setup (with a manual “Hacking for Beginners”
that he uses to listen to communications from the outside world, in best cyberpunk fashion. One day he overhears com between a drone pilot and his defective, but they detect him. He cuts the connection, but shortly thereafter, while he and his brother are away at a party, they survey a TV broadcast of an American drone pilot’s first mission, going after “aqua terrorists”
Memo flees to Tijuana to earn money for his family as a plugged in worker — the US border is totally shut down, so Mexicans toil by remote control from south of the border, using robots to the north. On the bus North, Memo meets Luz (Leonor Varela), a handsome young woman who is trying to produce a living as a ‘writer’, jacking in and transcribing her memories directly into cyberspace for others to lift. She ‘writes’ a vignette of having met Memo, and what cramped of his narrative he told her. When he is mugged, she offers to derive him the implanted nodes which will let him work .. and turns out to be able to do the “coyoteka’s” work herself. Luz’s writeup of Memo has an interested customer, who wants more material and she sees Memo again and again. Luz finds herself falling for him as he does for her. Eventually, they are brought together with the phantom customer, and the film winds to a surprising but seemingly inevitable conclusion.

Sleep Dealer is replete with nice runt touches, such as the drone pilot being of Latino descent, from a military family; or the company Memo works for, Cybracero (cyber + bracero) . The special effects may not be residence of the art, but are perfectly adequate to the purpose at hand, that of telling Memo’s sage and presenting the world he lives in. And that world is very carefully imagined, firmly grounded in the realities of today.
In the press kit, which is available on line, director Alex Rivera describes Sleep Dealer as “a humble film … an unbiased attempt to expend science-fiction film to say something modern, and something proper, about our world today.” He has succeeded in spades. A very keen 5 *’s.

This tiny sleeper of a movie winds together more different strands than any I’ve seen in ages. It variously explores American isolationism combined with a expect for immigrant labor, the rise of a commercial military, novel kinds of sweat shops, armed escalation of the water wars, and the irony of social networking (in the electronic sense) . As people interact more by wire, eventually, the wires become essential for interacting even in person.
The major location elements seem familiar – ancient society failing under pressure from the novel work, and the boy trying to encourage his family by working in the tremendous city. A relatively unusual stereotype appears, too: the soldier who we approach to respect, even when he fights in a war that we don’t.
This succeeds at many levels. It can be seen as an anti-American, anti-corporate diatribe, or as a grim extrapolation of today’s headlines. Either scheme, it carries reminders that people will mild approach out to each other, and that personal honor will continue to have meaning.

Intriquing, well-acted, ADULT-THEMED thriller!![]()
I emphasized the “ADULT-THEMED” idea in my title because one of the best things about seeing a film like EASTERN PROMISES is that it is so adult, so uncompromised. Cronenberg gets to make the movies he wants to, and it doesn’t have to be watered down or dumbed-down to make it sell to a broad audience. We get a brutal, sometimes squirm-inducing look at a underworld we haven’t seen like this before…and there’s no gloss, no pandering to a teen audience, no sappy ending, etc. etc. The ending is SATISFYING…but it isn’t easy or “Hollywood.”
First of all, the script is outstanding. From the creator of another stunning film about London’s “seamy underbelly,” DIRTY PRETTY THINGS…the plot makes sense, the threads all come together and the characters are simply but sharply delineated. Yet at no time do I feel the themes are being spoon-fed. Also, some of the acts that are perpetrated on Viggo Mortensen’s character near the end of the film are acts of amazing betrayal…yet if you haven’t been paying attention, you might miss that. It’s not a super-complex plot…but it doesn’t grab you by the hand and lead you from place to place.
Speaking of Mortensen…this is his best performance ever. Granted, Aragon is crown-jewel, and he handled it well…but those films were events, such spectacle that often what he simply needed to do was wear his costume, ride his horse and look great. In EASTERN PROMISES, he has to make us care about a very nasty piece of work indeed. He’s also very stony-faced…so much of what we learn about him, especially early on, comes from very subtle work. Again, each word of the script is perfectly chosen, and Mortensen digs deep here. He’s not always my favorite actor…I actually wasn’t nuts about him in A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE (A film I otherwise greatly admired)…but he’s perfectly cast here. And of course, he’s amazing to watch in the now infamous nude fight scene. It’s a little bit distracting being aware of male full-frontal nudity flashing around…almost enough to take one out of the scene…but the scene is so well staged that the sheer PAIN of it soon wipes out any feeling of “hey, we get to see ALL of Viggo Mortensen.”
Armin Mueller-Stahl plays the older patriarch of the Russian mafia family, and he’s the best of this type of character I’ve seen in awhile. You know the one…the old gangster who is so sweet and loving to the youngsters in his family, so polite and full of grace and manners. Picture Brando in the wedding scenes of THE GODFATHER or even Paul Newman in early scenes of ROAD TO PERDITION. Stahl is even better…his eyes twinkle with charm. But boy, when the mask drops and we see the real guy…still soft-spoken and considered…he’s stunningly evil. I really enjoyed seeing him again…it seems like it’s been awhile since he was in a film.
Vincent Cassel plays Stahl’s hot-headed son…another gangster cliche…the kid who is supposed to take over the business, but is actually a bit of a moron and troublemaker. But again, the character has surprises up its sleeve. Also, Naomi Watts plays the nurse who brings a motherless baby unwittingly into this underworld…and she is reliably good. Her character doesn’t get to have all the dramatic flourishes…but Watts gives another patented, fully committed, honest performance. I believe she may be our most under-rated actress, even though she has been nominated for awards and starred in many films…I think she’s still undervalued. EASTERN PROMISES won’t win her new fans or an Oscar…but she is still very good.
Notice I didn’t talk much about the plot. Others have done it better, and to be honest, I’d love it if you just went to see the film having little idea of what you were about to experience. It’s a brutal journey…but it is full of unexpected turns…not just of plot but of character. I’ll bet come year end, this will still be one of my favorites of the year! Highly, highly recommended for ADULT audiences!!

Cronenberg is a fascinating director. Even when he “just made horror films” he produced veritable masterpieces of mood and unnerving atmosphere, almost all incorporating his very unique “body horror,” such as the now-classic Scanners, Videodrome, The Brood and Shivers. Fans of such films accused him of “selling out” when he made History of Violence. The main problem with this claim is that History of Violence was astounding. Well, he’s done it again. Eastern Promises is EASILY his best film. Here Cronenberg proves he’s a master. Promises is a beautifully simple film, so well-made and nearly perfect that other modern directors would do well if they could only emulate his style and class. The film is chocked full of nuance and subtlety. The performances are grand and the soundtrack is gorgeous. I would not be surprised if Viggo wins best actor, Cronenberg best director or if Promises wins best picture. Yes, it’s that good. (On a side note, watch out for the bathhouse knife fight. It’s the most realistic and visceral fight scene in a film since Friedkin’s The Hunted.)

EASTERN PROMISES as written by Steven Knight and directed by David Cronenberg is one of the grittiest, insightful, and well-acted films of the year. Maintaining his keen eye for the dark side of life and the people who dwell in its shadows, Cronenberg has once again brought us characters so strongly etched on film that they will be remembered for many years.
The setting is London where lives the enigmatic Russian-born Nikolai Luzhin (Viggo Mortensen in an Oscar caliber performance) who serves as a driver for a cloaked mysterious Russian family, members of the Russian mafia called the Vory V Zakone, a bizarre brotherhood populated with men whose lives of crime are told in tattooed stories on their bodies. The head of the family is the elegant restaurateur Semyon (Armin Mueller-Stahl) whose son Kirill (Vincent Cassel) carries on the crime aspects of the family but shows no role of leadership in his dissipated life style. As the film opens we observe the birth of a little girl to a drug-addled mother Tatiana (Sarah-Jeanne Labrosse): she dies during childbirth having been delivered by a midwife Anna (Naomi Watts) who herself has a history of a stillborn child. Anna finds a diary in Tatiana’s purse, saves it, and takes it to her uncle to translate it form the Russian. Opening the diary opens dark secrets for Semyon and Kirill: Tatiana was apparently one of the many illegal Russian prostitutes imported by the Vory V Zakone crime syndication and was raped by Semyon whose daughter was born as Tatiana died. Anna’s investigation as to the baby’s heritage includes the invaluable help of Nikolai who despite his past has a soft spot for Anna and her plight and it is the manner in which the interplay of Anna, Semyon, Kirill and Nikolai works out that brings the film to its conclusion.
The acting is impeccable with Mortensen, Watts, Cassell, and Mueller-Stahl at peak form. Cameo roles by Sinéad Cusack and Jerzy Skolimowski, among others, are fully fleshed. The accents are believable and the multiple tattoos on Mortensen’s body (seen fully in the much ballyhooed bathhouse scene, more about killing than about voyeurism) match the dark, dank atmosphere well captured by the cinematographer Peter Suschitzky and echoed with the musical score by Howard Shore. This is a tough movie for the squeamish to watch, but the story is superb and the film is Cronenberg at his best. Grady Harp, December 07

This is probably not going to surprise anyone– This is simply an beneficial DVD, in every scale. The first disc contains the movie itself, which is transferred from its unique, digital source. The portray quality is astounding. Not one position comes up during the movie, not one scratch appears– because this wasn’t transferred from film. This is the device A Bug’s Life should be watched. The colors are astounding, brilliant and incompatibility eachother perfectly. The sound is also unbelievable– this movie challanged my 1.5 surround system perfectly. Unlike some other movies I’ve seen, where the two rear speakers are only feeble about twice in the movie, A Bug’s Life uses them almost constantly– You can hear the crickets and cicadas all around you in many of the scenes, Hopper’s gang are flying at you from behind; Even with a simple scene like the “Royal Huddle” the ant’s footsteps are coming from around you. The first disc contains a Cinemascope widescreen version and a pan-and-scan version. I’ll have to say that if you don’t have a widescreen TV (I don’t), you probably should forget about the widescreen version here as it is aspecially dinky. Besides, the PSP version was edited digitally in a very special map, even described on this DVD– you hardly miss anything in the PSP version because of that special editing. If anything, you actually procure to gawk more detail. Also on the first disc are two special audio choices, Music Only (icy) and SFX only (VERY cold), and a director’s commentary (quite wintry, although not the best I’ve heard. John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich seem to talk too worthy about the tale, which sometimes makes it sound as if they’re fair describing what you already gawk on veil.)
(I’m not going to give review to the movie itself here– In short, it is definitly a 5 star movie!)
The second disk is where the proper fun begins. I’ve never seen so many extras, with so many choices to settle from. It’s almost confusing– You not only find to behold how they made the movie, you regain to literally behold how they developed EACH AND EVERY character in this film. It’s astounding. You can also hear how they edited the sound, sight how they made the PSP version so kindly, peer how they made the outtakes at the raze (and also watch the outtakes by themselves, shapely, elephantine mask and with no credits to interrupt), seek an interview with the characters themselves (which is simply hilarious), and… Notice Geri’s Game in all its glory. And there’s even more.

A BUG’S LIFE is truly a movie that the entire family can devour. It is adorable, amusing, and it has a message that everybody can picture to.
The DVD is fantastic, astonishing, astounding! The transfer (the first ever completely digital transfer), is simply fantastic. It is like you can arrive into the veil and touch the characters. The cinemascope animation is truly beautiful, and the transfer expresses it beautifully. The sound is amazing. You feel like you’re in the bugs’ world.
This DVD has the most extraordinary position of extras I have ever seen. It takes you through the entire process of making A BUG’S LIFE…I’ve gone through “preproduction” and the first half of “production” and it took me an hour and a half…I tranquil have three sections left! What is more improbable is that every extra is inspiring! Truly an outstanding, definite to be groundbreaking disc. Disney, why can’t all of your DVDs be like this!

i gave this a five star rating but maybe it was a four and a half or a four star.
i felt that this was a very true movie. i could spy mighty, if not all, of this having taken state. okay, for the ease of making a movie some things were simplified [like the ease of the illegal entry into a domicile. i at no point felt that this promoted nor current child molestation like one of the other reviewers. i will need to peep this once more to perform distinct that all of the lose ends were tied up. I’m very confident that there are no chase ups. there are a number of unexpected twists that made sense because of human nature’s willingness to leave primary details. so when a character doesn’t reveal others everything it’s to preserve up his, or her, public perception.

they deduce that the killer must be local.
while looking for the grave diggers vehicle they recognize their faded tormenter.
the dilapidated tormentor comes after them.
mark doesn’t like that one of his two friends called up the grave digger and state into motion a simple conception.
“hey, grave digger… if you don’t slay our tormentor we’ll turn you into the cops.”
from here we inspect that simple plans often don’t go apt and can gain unpleasant side effects. also, there seems to be a itsy-bitsy research that was venerable to near up with what creates the sick-os that that we ogle as sociopaths or harm to the young that creates psychopaths.
i felt that there was high quality in the acting, filming, direction, and script. grand of the scenery was gorgeous, filmed in queensland Australia.
as i mentioned earlier there were many unexpected points that created twists. these were not gimmicks but based on human nature. after viewing again I’m clear i’ll acquire the film seamless with no lose ends.
Acolytes is a 2008 Australian film with a premise both simple and unusual: Three teenage friends stumble across a burial set in the woods, identify a serial killer, and settle to blackmail him into committing a crime on their behalf. This is not a thought born out of restless boredom. The crime, it seems, is a design of extreme justice for an act of violence that occurred several years earlier.
Present day scenes feature the friends’ daily wanderings across a hideously slow suburban neighborhood. We never sight concerned adults–other than law enforcement officers–taking an interest in anything they do. Loving parents will secure this appalling, but just ones will admit that a lot of teens live this arrangement. Unsupervised and disconnected from parents who are busy working or unprejudiced not that fervent, the young people in this account execute meaning and relationships from scratch. What they near up with is sometimes touching and dark, but it is also risky and potentially self-destructive.
The tale deepens with a series of flashbacks. Every creepy revelation and each unique act of brutality builds naturally and inexorably upon the last, until the horrific ending seems both surprising and inevitable. Only one moment, behind in the film–when two of the teens race to benefit the third at their usual meeting place–seems unlikely. There is a missing bridge here, a scene of reconciliation between the two boys, which would elaborate the action.
Director Jon Hewitt has coaxed believable performances from his cast. And he’s framed them–both teens and adults–with a soulless backdrop that makes the word “community” seem ridiculous. Both the natural world and suburban limbo are revealed as places that maintain plain mysteries, down winding roads and leisurely closed doors.

As an American I was apalled at the cheap DVD release they did of this film in the states, especially after hearing about the French release. Imagine my delight to notice that Canada also had a 3 disc status that I could steal.
I’ve studied French since I was young and while not conversant in it I aloof have some basic thought of this radiant language. I enjoyed all the extras and only wished my French was remarkable better so I could listen to the commentaries. But the first-rate news is that most of the extras have subtitles so if you do not impart French do not misfortune!
I also remarkable prefered the English subtitles to the English dubbing. The dubbing sounded phoney, and it chops the dialogue up considerable worse than subtitles do. When are people going to actually hire snarl actors who sound convincing as the charcters of the film? Anyway…
This is one of the most facinating films I have ever seen, not since Neil Jordan’s “The Company of Wolves” has a film so captured the spirt of the fairy tales and legends of veteran, not the sanitized versions we now leer today. The cast is knowing especially Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel both were fair riveting. The set was intriquing to the very waste. If I have to criticize anything I assume the sword fight at the waste felt too forced and a bit artificial due to the special effects of the blade not being convincing enough. Other than that I will always think this one of the best films I have ever seen!
