Warner Bros. started releasing episodes of the award-winning “Batman: The Spellbinding Series” (BTAS to fans) on DVD in miserly single-disc editions containing four or five episodes apiece. Fan complaints and well-liked sense have finally made Warner Bros. realize the potential of this acclaimed and hugely common series and have released the first volume of episodes in a deluxe package: 4 discs, 28 episodes. The shows are presented in production order, with a few variations to attach the multi-part episodes together. The sound is an improved Dolby Surround 2.0, and the represent is heavenly. There are some extras — not a titanic amount — but the actual feature here is the shows themselves. There has rarely been an appealing display that has achieved this level of quality writing and artwork. Heck, rarely do LIVE action shows do this sort of quality!
BTAS was released as children’s programming originally, but the animators, directors, and writers turned it into something of adult complexity (not that kids don’t care for it too, but adults tend to be the biggest fans, mostly laughable book lovers) . Freed of the constraints of selling toys, the filmmakers created an intricate indicate that was moral to the gloomy, psychological side of Batman and his adversaries. Instead of sticking to stupid formulas usually associated with titillating TV shows, the writers made distinct each episode was something fresh, and kept drama always at the forefront. The animation is spectacular and fluid, the action scenes have a kick to them generous to many movies, and the orchestral scores contribute to the feeling of something special.

DISC 1: Contains episodes “On Leather Wings,” “Christmas with the Joker,” “Nothing to Scare,” “The Last Laugh,” “Shapely Poison,” “The Underdwellers,” and “P.O.V.” The first episode is the best on this disc, with Batman facing the fearsome Man-Bat. The exhibit really hit the ground running, but the immediate follow-ups are a bit ragged. “P.O.V.” has moments of interest because of its modern structure, and “Nothing to Alarm” has a grand finale, but the two Joker episodes are particularly poor; the point to hadn’t quite figured out its style yet. Also on this disc is commentary by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski for “On Leather Wings,” and a two-minute demo they did to sell the peek of the series.
DISC 2: Contains episodes “The Forgotten,” “Be a Clown,” “Two Face (Parts 1&2),” “It’s Never Too Tedious,” “I’ve Got Batman in My Basement,” and “Heart of Ice.” The last is one of the most current episode of the series, introducing the astonishing re-imagining of Mr. Freeze as a tragic figure. “Two-Face” is also a capable villain origin epic. The other episodes are minor, with a bad Joker and Penguin episode, but “It’s Never Too Leisurely” is an appealing non-super-villain yarn. The bonus feature on this disc is a substantial 18-minute documentary about the series, with interviews with the producers, writers, and some of the actors. There’s also audio commentary on “Heart of Ice” with Timm, Radomski, and writer Paul Dini.

The One Portion Season Two Third Voyage basically picks up where the Second Voyage left off in that the Strawhats remain on a mission to negate the Princess Vivi to her homeland of Alabasta. However, sheer survival is the more immediate goal of this chunk of episodes with Nami fighting an extremely high fever, which causes the crew to port at the frigid island of Drum in search of medical abet.
Pursued by a metal-mouthed pirate king named Wapol and his goons (including the hilarious detachable-afro wielding Kuromarimo), there is no shortage of conflict for the big-hearted crew this time around.

As they come Alabasta, the crew is visited by a seemingly pleasurable transvestite (Bon Clay) who entertains them with his ability to copy their appearances, not suspecting that this man is actually Mr. 2 of the Baroque Works. This incident has major implications later, especially for lady’s-man Sanji.

This compilation brings together the two feature films edited from the two Crockett series runs from the mid-1950s, the unusual 3-part mini-series (“Davy Crockett, Indian Fighter”,”Davy Crockett Goes to Congress”, and “Davy Crockett At the Alamo”) and the 2-part second series (“Davy Crockett’s Keelboat Urge” and “Davy Crockett & the River Pirates”) . It is a mountainous transfer of all the materials and something to kick befriend and utterly be pleased, both as nostalgia and as agreeable cinematic storytelling.
While some of the historicity here is arguable ( there was, for instance, no Creek war chief named “Red Stick”…the “Red Sticks” were a warrior clan WITHIN the Creek nation…and led by a WHITE man) , the depiction of Crockett’s character and personality as interpreted by Fess Parker, seem unprejudiced about dead-on . And the verve and spirit of the thing, enlivened by Tom Blackburn’s jaunty balladry, is fair a feast for the soul. And what more is there to say about the performances of Buddy Ebsen as George Russell and Jeff York as the irrepressable Mike Fink except “Bravo” (and let’s not overlook Kenneth Tobey, who played
Jim Bowie in the “Alamo” episode, only to turn around objective a year later to appear as Mike Fink’s “Gullywhumper” first mate, “Jocko”) .
An earlier reviewer “Richard Ceourdelion” (I hope Robin Hood got him safely returned to his throne) complained about not liking these compilations as considerable as the “dependable t.v. note”. Like another reviewer, I would ask “Why don’t you have both? “. The complete t.v. series…with hosted commentary by Leonard Maltin and with all the Walt Disney introductions, commercials, credits, etc., intact, has been out for several years now as allotment of the “Disney Treasures” Collection (comes packaged in an aluminum ‘tin’ that replicates a film cannister) . I have one and stare it often. This is the only dwelling you can hear the COMPLETE “Ballad of Davy Crockett”, as well as watch all the incredible line drawings that passe to frame each episode. And you will also witness something you never before realized…that the episodes you saw as a child of the fifties on a shaded & white t.v. were juxtapositions of SOME scenes shot in technicolor and SOME scenes done in unlit and white. Strikes you queer now when you seek it today…this switching benefit and forth…but it worked radiant on b & w television “draw encourage then”.
Of course for the theatrical release compilations—what you gawk in the versions specifically under review HERE—all the shadowy & white shots have been dropped and only the Technicolor footage retained.

Now, if only they will bring out “The Sage of Robin Hood & His Merrie Men” (Richard Todd, Peter Finch), the SECOND best Robin Hood film after Errol Flynn’s, THIS boomer will be a pleased camper indeed (since “Darby O’Gill” IS out now, with “The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh” (Patrick McGoohan), reputedly in DVD preparation) .

I missed out on the Davy Crockett craze, which means I did not have a coonskin cap and was not running around the neighborhood singing ‘The Ballad of Davy Crockett” over and over again. By the time I was watching television Fess Parker was Daniel Boone and not Davy Crockett, so it took a bit of mental rearrangement to derive my young mind around the concept that he was both when “The Incredible World of Disney” rebroadcast the adventures of Davy Crockett. They made enough of an impression that my brother and I compelled our parents to remove us the Disney report that had audio versions of the three adventures. So it has been nigh on thirty-five years since I done seen these unusual adventure of Davy Crockett and I was a might surprised to learn they own up gorgeous well.
“Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier” combines “Davy Crockett, Indian Fighter,” “Davy Crockett Goes to Congress,” and “Davy Crockett at the Alamo.” Davy and his sidekick Georgie Russell (Buddy Ebsen) cessation a Creek uprising and convince Chief Red Stick (Pat Hogan) to return to the ways of peace despite the abet of Captain Norton (William Bakewell) and with the tactic approval of General Andy Jackson (Basil Ruysdael), spends some time speechifying in the United States Congress, and then joins the little band of volunteers led by Jim Bowie (Kenneth Tobey) defending the Alamo against the Mexican army of General Santa Ana. He stops Bigfoot Mason (Mike Mazurki) from stealing the land of Charlie Two Shirts (Jeff Thompson), gives a speech in Congress defending the honest of Indians to their tribal lands, and befriends the bold Busted Luck (Cut Cravat) on the device to the Alamo. The climatic battle has an appropriate gravity and does a tolerable job of sticking to history beyond reducing the role of Colonel Travis (Don Megowan) . When Davy sings a final song on the last night of the battle there is an unexpected poignancy, which contrasts well with the simple determination to conclude there until the extinguish. The explore of Davy swinging weak Betsy as a club while about to be overwhelmed by the Mexican troops is a memorable final image of our hero.
Ultimately the main strength of these stories are the performances of the two leads. Parker completely natural in the role and Ebsen shows an understated humorous touch throughout. The friendship between Davy and Georgie becomes the one constant throughout the adventures. There are several sparkling supporting performances as well, particularly Ruysdael as Andy Jackson and Tobey as a fatalistic Jim Bowie. Weak character actor Hans Conreid plays Thimbelrig, a gambler the boys acquire up on their plan to Texas. Granted, the nostalgic aspects of “Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier” is going to be a strong portion of the entertainment value here, but these are very favorable yarns for the Fifties.
“Davy Crockett and the River Pirates” includes both that fifth and final adventures of Davy Crockett (Fess Parker) and his friend Georgie Russell (Buddy Ebsen), and the previous account “Davy Crockett’s Keelboat Accelerate.” The favorite denominator between the two is not only the Mississippi River but also the self-styled King of the River, the braggart and brawler Mike Fink (Jeff York) . Unlike the first three adventures of the legendary American aloof together in the 1955 film “Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier,” these 1956 tales residence a greater emphasis on comedy (although Mike Fink’s character is a lot more realistic in the second adventure) .

After all, the first three were looking more at the historical Davy Crockett and this pair is more about the legendary figure. Parker does not seem as comfortable with the slapstick as he does with Davy’s more serious side. When compared to “Davy Crockett at the Alamo” it is a bit hard to fill this is the same character. This Merchant Ivory masterpiece is a must-own DVD: not only if you are intrigued by the labyrinthine world of English genteel lifestyles (butlers, under-butlers, footmen and the like), or some graceful British dialogue, but if you savor an understated cinematic experience that calm stirs emotion and circumspection comparable to that provoked by the written word.
Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson play the dignified servants of a manor between the walls of which “astronomical affairs of the world are decided.” Both had me in their clutches at the very outset (position against the backdrop of the English countryside and exquisitely complimented by the music of Richard Robbins) and never let go. I was also somewhat surprised to gaze an early Hugh Grant and a young Ben Chaplin — both before they became illustrious, and you can gawk why they got where they are today.
Each and every shroud of the movie is riveting, and all characters play their parts impeccably. Merchant/Ivory films are often too precious and too tastefully presented to accept overly furious about. Despite how fair they may eye, I often collect myself restless and then unsatisfied with their films that are often too stuffy and airless to ever experience more than once.

The film is rich in period details (the cinematographer was Tony Pierce-Roberts) and offers an impeccable production build by Luciana Arrighi (“Anna and the King”), residence decoration by Ian Whittaker (Anna and the King) and wonderfully re-created period costumes by Jenny Beavan and John Incandescent.

“Remains of the Day” is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen. A few minutes worth of minor print flaws and very occasional visible edge enhancements are the only minor drawbacks of this high quality presentation of the film. The characterize is attractive and crisp, dim levels are strong and colors are rich.
The soundtrack of the film is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 though most of the audio is front and center. The 28 and a half petite HBO leisurely the scenes special from 1993 is more promotional in nature but of interest which features scenes for the film, late the scenes footage and interviews.

But let’s gain the negatives out of the draw first, to elaborate why I gave it four stars rather than five:
1) One reviewer for Volume 1 complained that there was too minute material extracted from a six-year period of broadcasts. Unfortunately, Volume 2 presents the same limits.

2) If a Volume 3 is ever released, please omit the Falling Baker skit for the Number Two. With the modern two volumes, it’s been repeated to death. Give us more variety — at least treat us to that elusive Number One skit (Baker falling with a wedding cake) .
3) Same packaging is faded as in Volume 1, with two of the three discs annoying stacked on top of each other.
4) One Super-Grover skit appears to be needlessly edited with modern material.
5) That irritating disclaimer saying the DVDs may not be appropriate teaching material for today’s kids. (Might the lobster-trap segment be too un-PC? ) My 3-year-old nephew absolutely loves watching Volume 1, so I anticipate the same reception for Volume 2.
Nonetheless, this DVD location almost earned five stars from me for two main reasons:
1) The nostalgia execute was considerable enough to nearly override the negatives.
2) There’s one absolutely can’t-miss-feature in Disc One — the test pilot extinct to pitch the reveal to PBS! Some material almost unsettled me as a kid but I now fetch hilarious (King Minus), while some is of fair downright laugh-out-loud quality (Grover’s show-and-tell with Maria’s head) .
You’ll also acquire the following: Telephone Rock, I’m a hard-working dog, surprisingly more of Roosevelt Franklin, Cookie Monster in flamboyant Elton-John wardrobe, the moment when Woof-Woof’s name was changed to Barkley (a change I voted against as a kid, but which I now can’t imagine having occurred otherwise), and one moment when Snuffy came so finish to being discovered by David. At least hearing the audience delight after viewing STAGE BEAUTY makes a case for more mainstream male actors to shed the apprehension of taking on roles that feature gender and sexuality variations: Russell Crowe, Colin Farrell, Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Antonio Banderas, Javier Bardem, Rodrigo Santoro, Gael Garcia Bernal, et al have all performed sensitively as glad men despite their macho image – the once little list is now respectably astronomical. And now add Billy Crudup and Ben Chaplin to that ever-growing list. Bravo to that change.

STAGE BEAUTY (in the screenplay version of his beget play ‘The Compleat Female Stage Beauty’ by Jeffrey Hatcher) is plot in the mid 17th century with all the frills and foibles of British dandies and ladies visually intact. This is the time when female roles were assumed by male actors (the theater was simply no spot for ladies to participate) and we are introduced to Mr. Kynaston (in a quick-witted, multifaceted performance by Billy Crudup!) as he portrays Desdemona in Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’. He is attended by a dresser Maria Hughes (Claire Danes, another superlative acting achievement) who longs to act and steals away after performances in the theater bustle by actor Betterton (Tom Wilkinson) to a tavern where she assumes the memorized roles Kynaston performs on the royally popular stage.
Kynaston has been raised to report women on stage (and indeed in life) and responds to men as a woman (his lover is the Duke of Buckingham – Ben Chaplin) . King Charles II (a thorough-going hilarious scuttle for the gifted Rupert Everett) is convinced by his tart du jour to allow women to play women’s roles on the stage, thus dethroning Kynaston as the actress of the time, driving him into tawdry masquerades in pubs after a severe beating from thugs beckoned by the bloated Sir Charles Sedley (Richard Griffiths) . Maria Hughes thus becomes the first ‘compleat female actress’ and this transition between Kynaston and Maria results in desperate tutoring lessons before Maria can play Desdemona for the King. For the first time in his life Kynaston must request his occupy sexuality and his successful final curtain after playing Othello to Maria’s Desdemona gratefully leaves that choice up in the air.

The script is a delight, the actors are all first rate, especially the wholly immersed Crudup and Danes who could well be fraction of the Royal Shakespeare Company, so stunning is their British sound, demeanor, and Shakespeare! The supporting cast is a kaleidoscope of jewel-like performances from Everett, Wilkinson, Edward Fox, Hugh Bonneville among others. The mood is appropriately British – all dim, candlelit stagecraft and foggy marsh vistas – and the music matches the overall describe. Richard Eyre has directed a film that deserves many kudos, but the main glory should shine on his ability to discover the spectrum of gender and sexuality with dignity, intelligence, and grand sensitivity. We know that Edward (Ned) Kynaston (1640-1706) was among the last and reputedly the best of the male actors of female parts in dramas performed prior to the Restoration period. Following his coronation, King Charles II decreed that females would be permitted to appear on stage in roles previously performed only by males. For many male actors, the subsequent transition was very, very difficult. There are sure parallels with the difficulties that stars such as John Gilbert had during the transition from mute films to “the talkies.”
What we have in Stage Beauty is a toothsome presentation of that age and, more specifically, of Kynaston’s struggles (brilliantly presented by Billy Crudup) to get his career in juxtaposition with those of his dresser Maria (Claire Danes), an unskilled but aspiring actress, who seeks Ned’s tutelage to approach her acquire career. Frankly, I did not immediately gawk the always-superb Rupert Everett in the role of Charles II. Others in the supporting cast include Ben Chaplin (as George Villars, Duke of Buckingham) and Tom Wilkinson (as Thomas Betterton) . Historically, Betterton was once highly praised for his performance in Shakespeare’s Othello…in the role of Ophelia. In Stage Beauty, Kynaston plays Ophelia to Betterton’s Moor of Venice. After Kynaston rejects the advances of the lecherous Sir Charles Sedley (Richard Griffiths), Sedley hires thugs to beat Kynaston so severely that he can no longer create until his wounds have healed. Maria sees an opportunity, organizes what I guess could be called an “underground” performance of the play, and assumes the role of Ophelia herself. After seeing her performance, Charles II issues his proclamation and then….
Credit director Richard Eyre with obtaining expedient results from his talented cast and crew. Simulating London in the 1660′s was indeed a major task, achieved brilliantly by cinematographer Andrew Dunn, production designer Jim Play, and art directors Keith Slote and Jan Spoczynski. Of course, many of the humorous devices in both Hatcher’s play and in this film can be traced succor to classical Greek and Roman comedies, with the female roles in all of which performed by males. For example, all manner of mischief is achieved through erroneous identity, role and gender reversals, double entrendres, interpret disguises, no sequitors, etc. The highly literate screenplay invests the nimble anecdote with style and grace as Ned and Maria move to the inevitable, indeed obligatory resolution. Broad fun! Those who fraction my high regard for this film are urged to check out Victor/Victoria and Tootsie (in 1982) as well as Shakespeare in Cherish (1998) .

Soon, a chronicle evolves about the presence of a monster on the island. This creates the pretext for Jack to split off from the group with his tribe and effect a camp at a more defensible site. As this larger group becomes more and more used, they raid Ralph’s camp and acquire Piggy’s specs since it is the only means they have for starting fires. To placate the monster, the head of a killed wild pig is crop from its carcass and stood on the top of a pole reach the suspected monster’s lair as an offering to the monster.
After a few days, Simon observes this pig’s head and its very enormous collection of flies feasting on the festering flesh and imagines he hears the pigs head tell to him, hence, the source of the title. Simon is then killed when the hunters mistake him in the night for the monster.
When Ralph and Piggy waddle to Jack’s camp to recover Piggy’s specs, Piggy is killed by another `accident’ when Jack’s tribe members pry a enormous boulder loose that falls on Piggy. Ralph and Jack fight, Ralph is driven off, and the whole tribe sets fire to the jungle to flush out Ralph and, presumably, waste him. Both stories raze as Ralph runs to the beach to obtain himself at the feet of a very professionally uniformed member of his country’s elite armed services.
Hook spices up the dialogue by making the boys distinguished more hip with lots of voice words and references to contemporary common shows such as Alf and Miss Piggy of the Muppets. Unfortunately, Hook loses the two most notable elements of the whole legend. In the beginning of the modern and, subtly, in the beginning of Brook’s film, we glance that the world is once more at war and the boys from several different schools are on a plane to Australia to net relative safety from the coming (nuclear? ) conflict. Hook shows nothing of this, giving us simply a group of boys from the same military academy on a shuffle to goodness knows where. This totally looses the whole allegorical sense of the tale where the conflict between the boys mirrors the war in the world at gigantic, especially the sense of the last scene where the world (island) is destroyed by the conflict (fire) .
The second major oversight in Hook’s rendition is that there is never enough attention given to the significance of the pig’s head, Simon’s vision, and the sense of `The Lord of the Flies’. A less valuable point is that the origin of the monster epic is different in the two movies. Brook’s film follows the book and has it be a misinterpretation of a billowing parachute from a fallen, tiresome pilot. Hook creates the account out of the spasms of the downed plane’s delirious pilot as he finds refuge in a cave and is rediscovered by Simon who believes he is a monster.
Both movies do a credible job of depicting the plunge of nominally civilized boys into savagery and yarn. The combat between Ralph and Jack reach the destroy is straight out of Frazier’s `The Golden Bough’ on the chronicle of killing the king. Unfortunately, Hook’s version seems as eviscerated as the pig carcass, as all the colossal allegorical of the fresh legend are totally lost. And, as minimal as they were, I even believe the boys’ performances in Brook’s version are better done, as their initial innocence in the face of this loss of civilization makes their transformation all the more spicy.
Brook’s version is highly recommended.
It was a pleasure to gaze the unique version of “Lord of the Flies” again. I’ll be alive to in seeing the DVD version as well, to examine what additional material comes in that format. Having been one of the boys in the movie, I also appreciated seeing the reviews posted by other Amazon customers! I wonder if any of the other cast members have checked out this space…

I confess to liking the unique version far more than the remake, but that’s not surprising, I guess. I TRIED to support an launch mind when I saw the current version, but, alas, I failed. My recollections of running from the burning jungle, coughing, onto the beach at the raze makes a black-and-white rendition seem more steady to me.
