Streisand’s semi-controversial adaptation of THE PRINCE OF TIDES may not have completely satisfied fans of the book, however, the general public fell instantly under the film’s hypnotic spell – and turned it into a surprise box office smash! The decision to keep the film’s focus in the present rather than the past results in the elimination of most of the novel’s lengthy backstory. However, the well-condensed script (written by Conroy himself and Becky Johnson) manages to seamlessly fill in the missing information, and allows all central characters to reach a level of character development that is unusually high for a mainstream Hollywood film. As the film progresses, these characters seem especially real, and they are embodied by an absolutely flawless cast.
As anyone who has read the book can attest, the characters of Tom and Lila Wingo would seem to be extremely challenging (if not almost unplayable) roles, both of which are brimming with contradictions and hidden emotions. However, Nick Nolte and Kate Neligan find the perfect balance in their portrayals, which earned them both well-dissevered Oscar nominations. Blythe Danner, Jason Gould, and Melinda Dillion all also turn in memorable performances, even though Dillion’s Savannah (a lead character in the novel) has precious little screentime due to the film’s structure. Barbra also gives an affecting portrayal, however, the director’s chair is where she really shines this time. With it’s moving storyline, compelling characters, and breathtakingly beautiful cinematography, THE PRINCE OF TIDES is film that will continue enchant audiences for years to come.
About the DVD: The picture quality and sound are excellent, although it’s disappointing that the many extras (which included a featurette, deleted scenes, a gag reel, and Streisand’s full-length commentary track) that were included on Criterion’s special edition laserdisc release are not found on this DVD. The film’s original trailer and teaser are included, but I hope that all of the extras from the laserdisc will someday make their way to DVD.
A Perfect Drama!![]()
This is the perfect date movie, a drama so engrossing, so well acted and so lavishly produced that it doesn’t lose your attention throughout its long 132 minute run. Adapted from a best-selling novel of the same title by Pat Conroy (also author of “The Great Santini”), director and star Barbara Streisand has the support of the best ensemble cast one can imagine in delivering a superior movie. everyone included does a stllar job, from Nick Nolte as the protagonist and figure lovingly referred to in the title, Barbara as the psychiatrist who unravels the horrible mystery behind the protagonist’s family history, and a supporting cast that includes Bliythe Damnner as Nolte’s estranged wife, and George Carlin as the complex and interesting gay neighbor to Nolte’s kid sister in New York.
This is a wonderful film, one that dances back and forth in time, that does an unusually good job at translating a complex and convoluted story to the screen quite magically, and one that is not only plausible but also breath-taking in its import and seriousness. One comes away recognizing the growth in Nolte’s character and applauding the way the whole story fits together and is so believable. I save this one for rainy Friday nights, when I want to escape from the humdrum of a workweek gone bad. I can highly recommend it, and know you will come to love it, too. Enjoy!
Barbra Streisand — Queen of Tides![]()
Actually, the sentence in the title is not mine; the author of the book Pat Conroy was so grateful for the film that he gave the director such a name…
Conroy must have realised limitations of a film in comparison with the book. “The Prince of Tides” book is rather thick and to make a two-hour movie out of it is difficult. The film “Cider House Rules” was also criticised of being too thin in comparison with the book — and, in fact, the author John Irving himself wrote the script.
Romantic side is highlighted over a complex, dark family story, with Streisand enjoying the starring female role to the full. She does so alongside the great performance by Nick Nolte, who plays Tom Wingo, a teacher from American South hiding much of his painful past until he gets familiar with New York psychiatrist Susan Lowenstein (Streisand).
The film love story between Wingo and Lowenstein is one of the most memorable of the past decades, yet the picture also encompasses deep social undertones — suicide, hypocrisy, lack of family understanding. There is a couple of memorable scenes; the most special one comes when Wingo finally lets the demons of the past out — this is acting at its best on both Nolte’s and Streisand’s part. Although some other films also attempted something similar (e.g. “Good Will Hunting”, with Matt Damon and Robin Williams), it never was so powerful as here. The ending is bittersweet, not typically romantic but ultimately inevitable and logical for the story.
Beautiful cinematography and great musical score to a large extent made this film to achieve five stars in my book. I know I will keep on returning to “The Prince of Tides” video.

Great movie….not so great DVD unfortunately…![]()
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Purple Rain and Prince ‘s (the artist) music, but this DVD was kind of disappointing. The video quality of the transfer looks pretty good for its age, but why isn’t there a widescreen version? The production notes that Warner puts on their DVDs are annoying and glare off the TV. Oh, and a trailer. I know this isn’t a special edition, but there was so much stuff that could have been used. I guess you get what you pay for though. The movie gets 5 stars, but the DVD gets a 2/5.
It’s Not Just A Music Video![]()
Leonard Maltin’s review missed the main point of this movie. The movie is not primarily about a young musician who “struggles to gain acceptance for his own brand of … rock music”. Instead, the movie is about a man who has acquired his not only some of his father’s musical interest and talent, but also his father’s emotional instability and occasional abusiveness towards others, especially women. Maltin is correct that Prince’s character is sexist and unappealing, but that’s crucial to the movie. By playing his character as emotionally unstable, insensitive, and occasionally cruel, Prince de-glamourizes the cool, rebellious rock star image, showing that fame and talent are neither a guaranteed road to happiness nor a good excuse for being cruel to your girlfriend. This movie, rather than being a “soppy story” wrapped around concert footage, is instead genuinely literary. The concert footage is not an excuse for a movie; some of the concert footage is integral to the story. The title song, “Purple Rain”, is used very effectively in the movie as a point of conflict between Prince and two of his female bandmates.
This movie, like Quadrophenia, would make a good subject for an English literature class targeted towards aimlessly rebellious under-achievers (rather than the 4.0 GPA high school students that most English literature classes are designed for).
[This review is based on the VHS version of the movie.]
Purple Rain 20 years later![]()
I remember when I recently saw Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back,Jay showed his affinity towards Morris Day and the Time. Then some teenagers called Purple Rain “a crappy 80′s movie”.Although most of Y generation view Purple Rain like the second coming of Grease 2,Purple Rain rocked back in ’84 with people actually dancing in the isles.
This movie finally brought Prince into the mainstream and showed the genius that he was.Although he’d been making records since 1978,he made his mark with such albums as Dirty Mind, Controversy, and 1999(his breakout album with his first top ten hit Little Red Corvette)but only to a limited R&B and underground market. But once Purple Rain hit, things were never the same. The movie also brought Morris Day and The Time to the mainstream which unfortunately they would soon break up to never enjoy the fruits.
The movie is pretty much about a musician called The Kid (Prince) who dreams of making it despite his troubled homelife and a rival band, The Time. The movie has it’s fair share of bad acting as well as misogyny (“That ain’t Lake Minnitonka”)it’s the musical numbers as well as Morris Day’s comic timing that steals the show. The music still sounds fresh, especially the minimalist When Doves Cry which could even be released today.
Hopefully Warner brothers will release a 20th anniversary edition DVD with loads of extras as well as deleted scenes which were featured in the trailer. And with Prince’s comeback in 2004 including his Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame induction, Grammy performance and tour,it would really be the year of Prince.

Movie Title: Cinderella Cinderella is available for streaming or downloading. |
I own that the 1950 Disney adaption of the fairy yarn by Charles Perrault is one of the most common Disney movies released since 1937. This movie is comic, shaded, and charming at the same time, which may sound impossible for some movies.
I have watched this movie since I was 2, and I am now 12, and let me assure you that after 10 years, you never accept tired of it. I have the Masterpiece copy on this page, and it is very, very old-fashioned out, so I cannot wait for Disney to re-release this classic on Disney VHS and DVD in 2007, so I can consume it and technically accumulate my hands on it!
Anyway, this movie is about a girl named Cinderella, who’s father and mother have both died. She is forced to live with her vain and frightening stepsisters and cruel stepmother, and furthermore is forced to become a slave in her hold home.

Cinderella’s only friends are the actual mice, the birds, the dog an also the horse. One day, an invatation arrives from the palace, stating that every eligible maiden in the kingdom has to succor to a royal ball, honoring the return of the prince.
Cinderella’s stepmother lies to her, saying she can go only if she gets her chores done, and if she finds something pleasurable to wear.
She does all her chores, while her animal friends obtain a dress for her. Sadly, the stepsisters trek it up, and leave. However, Cinderella meets her Fairy Godmother, who sends her off to the ball, but she has to be help before the stroke of midnight, otherwise, the spell will be broke…

Enjoy this Disney masterpiece once again, which proves that dreams can advance apt.
In an misfortune to revive his sagging animation department, Walt Disney turned once again to a fairy narrative. This time around, he chose one of the best known and oldest of them all, Cinderella.

The story is familiar. A attractive girl is abused by her stepmother and stepsisters and forced to work as their slave. When a ball is given for all the eligible maidens in the kingdom, Cinderella dreams of going too, only to have her hopes dashed at the last itsy-bitsy. With a gift of magic, she is able to go, but only until the stroke of midnight.
The narrative is so well known, if fact, that any memoir about an underdog coming from slow and winning is called a Cinderella myth. Disney’s job here was to obtain the chronicle challenging for 75 minutes. The solution here was creating the animals. Mice Jaq and Gus and their constant struggle against the base cat Lucifer is droll and tying this sub-plot to the ultimate outcome is quick-witted. The other standout character is the stepmother who is frighteningly improper with no shapely powers.

As with any Disney movie, this one also has mammoth songs. Arguably the best known is “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo.” Fair late it is “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes.” My well-liked, however, is the often overlooked fancy song “So This is Treasure.”
While not the best release in the Platinum series, it unruffled stacks up well. The movie has been restored, and it looks titanic to me. I’m not a nitpicker, but I can’t accumulate any problems with the corpulent frame narrate, the unique aspect ratio. There is an enhanced 5.1 home theater mix, which doesn’t seem quite as impressive as some other releases. It seems more like the sound coming equally from all speakers. Of course, given the age of the film, there probably isn’t great more they could do. For purists, there is an novel soundtrack on the disc as well.
The extras in this space seem to be split between instruct for kids and adults, with the kids winning. Disc one includes a unique version of “A Dream is a Wish” with the stars of several Disney Channel series. It also has several “Cinderella stories” in sports moments, a outlandish feature to me. Disc two includes several features about living like a princess.
Also on disc two are the bonus features adult fans of this movie will want to notice. There are two “deleted scenes,” which are really abandoned songs with the storyboards created for them. In edition there are more abandoned songs with no storyboards on here. It’s comely keen watching how various ideas went from one fabricate to another before finally making it into the movie. Other extras include a thirty-eight small documentary about the creation of the demonstrate, including achieved interviews with the animators leisurely the exhibit. We are also treated to an overview of how the movie progressed over the years it was in development, a tribute to the “Nine Musty Men,” Disney’s “Laugh-O-Gram” version of the tale from 1922, and radio promotion from the time. I was thrilled to behold trailers from the movie’s multiple releases here. Unfortunately, there is no commentary in seek.
This Platinum DVD release means that all of Disney’s fascinating movies have been keep on DVD at some point in the last few years. While the Platinum series isn’t quite as nice for adult fans as they musty to be, this is mild a release that fans of the movie will want to assume up.

Inspired by The Goon Expose, appealing “At Last The 1948 Indicate”, “Do Not Adjust Your Plot” and “Monty Python’s Flying Circus”, a film of the novel “Beyond The Fringe” surfacing is cause for celebration of British Humor the world over!!!

This presentation has the complete West End/Broadway present, and runs a side-aching 116 minutes. *Very* comic stuff, this!
However, despite the box’s claims, this *not* the first released, nor the *only* filming of “Beyond The Fringe.” As any maven of early ’80′s U.S. Midnight movies knows, that honor goes dubiously to the poorly filmed and terribly recorded document of their Royal Protest Performance reunion with Monty Python’s Flying Circus at Prince Albert Hall from 1972, released in the U.S. as “Monty Python Meets Beyond The Fringe.” U.S. filmgoers (at any rate) left the theatre badly puzzled: The audience knew all the punchlines, and began laughing at them, and shouting at them before they were even uttered, drowning the actors out on the film’s soundtrack. That Grunt Performance has mercifully remained unreleased on Videotape and DVD, THIS performance fortunately is Noteworthy better! It is hilarious!

This is the 1964 farewell performance from London’s West Slay. It is well enough recorded, sonically speaking, although sometimes some castmembers seem unevenly miked or undermiked, or worse have a microphone drop-out for a second or two. Furthermore, it *is* in Shadowy & White, which the product review doesn’t seem to mention in any prominent diagram. Putting on the subtitles will support you with the occasional mike drop-out, but the B&W format does not incompatibility the stage region very well, and may seem a bit drab to the 21st century viewer. However, don’t let these details fear you away: this really *was* (and remains) one of the funniest things seen on stage since the Marx Bros. “Animal Crackers” in 1929!!!
This exhibit was filmed 41 years ago. It was filmed in murky & white with extinct audio/video equipment. The explain itself was notify simplicity: four young comedians on a bare stage. Their few props included a piano, a table and some chairs. Beyond a couple of hats, the players’ only costumes were the gray suits they wore throughout the expose. The exhibit itself consisted of these comedians riffing off political and cultural topics of the day. If you haven’t seen it, it doesn’t sound like grand.
But then why does “Beyond the Fringe” perform nearly all of today’s comedy search for pathetic by comparison?
This DVD captures four amusing geniuses in peak make. No, it’s not “politically legal”, and that is one reason it’s huge. Yes, in some places it comes off as quaint or dated, but 1964 was a while ago. 95% of the material is as recent today as it was the day the present was filmed. It’s best to discover this on DVD. You need both the video and the audio to fully enjoy each gag. And you need to be able to race parts benefit and contemplate them over, because you won’t get it all the first time. This is sparkling humor for educated adults. Bring your thinking cap and be ready to laugh.
By comparison, the “Saturday Night Live” kids survey like…unbiased that. Runt kids playing in a sand box. The “Monty Pythoners” were as irreverant, but never as chilly or quick-witted. Are you a fan of today’s typical setup-punchline comics? The “My mother/father/wife/kids…” or “Did ya ever wonder…” types? Then “Beyond the Fringe” is not for you. The one negative thing about this DVD is the method it reveals how far comedy has sunk since the 1960s, when “pushing the envelope” referred to intelligence and creativity, and not to the number of sexual or profane references old-fashioned. Hopefully, young comics will perceive this and be inspired to raise the bar on humor.
If you like moving, radiant humor, you’ve near to the apt position. And order it here, because you’ll pay more in the mail-order catalogs.

There can’t be powerful recount about the quality of this work. The staging, the singing, the technical brilliance of the hidef experience both visually and aurally are impeccable. A group of us gathered to experience La Cenerentola in my home. We laughed, we applauded, we smiled to each other sharing the delight.

As the review above eminent, no magic is fervent in this rendering of the Cinderella fable. Everything is worked out through the wisdom of Alidoro, the Prince’s weak tale counselor (sung brilliantly and with all due gravitas by Nathan Berg) . This makes it a comedy well within the human domain. The proper lessons are clear: vanity is illusive and will not abet us well, all of us must treat each other with kindness, virtue is rewarded, and forgiveness and admire heal all.
The characters are beautifully played and sung. Angelina (la cenerentola herself–Cinderella-sung by Ruxandra Donose) appropriately plays a somewhat withdrawn role at first but grows in vocal power and confidence throughout the opera . She emerges at the destroy as a brilliant beauty of radiant assert. The “disagreeable” stepsisters, Clorinda and Tisbe (Raquela Sheeran and Lucia Cirillo) are presented as very distinguishable comedic personalities whose voices often combine in bell-like harmonies. Don Magnifico, the contaminated stepfather, is played to big comedic carry out (Luciano Di Pasquale) as a buffoon who is cruel, terrorized, and self-delusive at the same time. His is a gem of a performance. (It is with this that we peruse one of the drawbacks of such high visual resolution: one can easily peer where the scalp shroud is joined to his temples. But then again, the characters and sets seem almost three-dimensional, so it is a obvious plus) . The Prince, Don Ramiro, (Maxim Mironov) is carefully constructed as a major character who must be less prominent than Cinderella herself, so he is a Rossini tenor, somewhere between tenor and counter-tenor. He is young, stunning, recognizes virtue and responds to it honorably, and sings well. Yet it is the other characters who dominate, including Dandini,(Simone Alberghini) the valet the Prince has commissioned to play him while the Prince stays in the background to see the reactions of the stepdaughters and anyone else hoping to be his bride.

Certainly this production shows off the glories of high definition BluRay, but it is the quality of the performances that should really sell this version to the public. For opera lovers, this Opus Arte presentation of the Glyndebourne production (almost always high quality from Glyndebourne and Opus Arte) is truly a must. It is not possible not to revel in this 3-hour delight. Do yourself a favor and pick up it; you’ll cherish it.
For several years I have owned the DVD release of this performance. Unprejudiced before the Blu-Ray copy arrived, I watched the whole DVD copy all the plan through and was impressed by the high musicality and well-behaved staging. The Prince stood out as a Rossinian singer of high excellence, who would be a credit to any stage.
After the Blu-Ray arrived I compared the two masterings with an spy to detail.
Visually, the Blu-Ray stands hand over fist above the DVD. Even with upscaling the DVD is fuzzy, and Jurowski comes across as a stern, smooth figure at the podium. With the extra clarity of the Blu-Ray report, the maestro’s petite facial expressions expose that he conducts by his charm as mighty as by his hand gestures. He possesses an inner conception of the humanity of this fraction of music, and exudes it during the overture. That revelation alone is worth the effect of the Blu-Ray disc.
Sonically, the Blu-Ray is a careful remix and clean-up of the novel tapes. On the DVD, two chairs can be heard to squeak on the floor a split second before Jurowski lowers his baton. Those distractions are gone on the Blu-Ray track. There is also better attention to volume level: the DTS track on the DVD becomes very harsh in the upper levels during the ensemble work, but everything balances nicely on the Blu-Ray.
I enjoyed the DVD very worthy but that was no reason to turn into a pumpkin: gather the Blu-Ray.

Anyone who has bought the previous sets know what to interrogate and for anyone who hasn’t all the boxes are always well done with the discs holding the episodes but not worthy more than that. The describe and sound is gigantic and it comes with a booklet with brief info on character’s (heroes and villains) and summaries of all the episodes. I also want to say that I be pleased that funimationn has made all the sets the same layout so they lineup well on a shelf.
I Hope they release the ninth season earlier than May but who knows, whenever they do we’ll win to perceive the Fusion and Kid Buu sagas finishing up this series on DVD.
I’ve enjoyed rewatching these episodes that I remember so well despite not having seen them since they originally aired arrangement benefit at the turn of the millenium. I score myself watching familiar moments and enjoying them in completely unique and different ways than I did as a youth. I’m certain many relish this season since it’s getting us into the final saga’s and battles of DragonBall Z but I always found these sagas different for a reason that I’m objective now opinion. Other than the thirteen originals that broadcast in the mid-nineties, that I actually remember watching, Dragon Ball hadn’t aired in North America so most of us were introduced to DBZ first. I got ragged to the reveal being very science fiction oriented with the first few seasons of alien threats, region recede, killer androids and time depart and then came this final accelerate of Majin Buu, which was more about magic and crazy fighting techniques. After having seen the Dragon Ball series in it’s entirety now and looking at these episodes I enjoy them more because I understand that Akira Toriyama had simply taken the series support to it’s roots for the final sagas. The modern Dragon Ball was all about crazy fighting styles and ridiculous moves and it had many elements of magic, for DBZ he had been influenced more by Sci-Fi in an attempt to change up the narrative but here gleaming he was bringing it to an demolish he must have decided to retract it relieve to the earliest days.
Any fan of DBZ will come by these delicious, the final face off between Goku and Vegeta, Goten and Trunks learning Fusion, Goku transforming to SS3. I even catch Goten and Trunks trying to fight in disguise as an adult and Eighteen fighting Hercule in a melee tournament humorous B stories. I’m satisfied this will be out in February and can’t wait to conclude this series with the final two sagas and the ninth boxed state. Thanks.
