The Future of Science Fiction 5*
I have seen the future of science fiction, and it is excellent, at least if this film has the influence it so richly deserves. Written science fiction is about so worthy more than the station opera and bug eyed monster tales and post-apocalyptic gotterdammerung that accomplish the bulk of filmic “sci fi” that it is friendly to glimpse the film world catching up. There have always been a few “exact” science fiction movies that demolish the mold — “A Boy and His Dog”, “2001″, “Blade Runner”, even “Charly” (though that butchered the unique fantastic Daniel Keys novella, the intent was there) near to mind. Sleep Dealer combines a cyberpunk vision of the approach future with a distinct social vision and a dynamite residence and characterizations. On the bus North, Memo meets Luz (Leonor Varela), a handsome young woman who is trying to produce a living as a ‘writer’, jacking in and transcribing her memories directly into cyberspace for others to lift. She ‘writes’ a vignette of having met Memo, and what cramped of his narrative he told her. When he is mugged, she offers to derive him the implanted nodes which will let him work .. and turns out to be able to do the “coyoteka’s” work herself. And that world is very carefully imagined, firmly grounded in the realities of today.

The frail, featuring David Gerrold commentary, is presented in 1080p high definition with a 1.33:1 aspect ratio and a DTS-HD MA 7.1 soundtrack. The episode runs for 24:13. The video and audio quality are improbable and bode well for a possible future Blu-ray release of the entire series. Meanwhile, “Trials and Tribble-ations” features a 1080i, 1.33:1 aspect ratio that I feel is no better than the same episode’s upscaled DVD counterpart. The episode does feature a DTS-HD MA 7.1 lossless soundtrack.
Trials and Tribble-ations: Uniting Two Legends takes viewers deep into the episode’s notion. Originally airing in the U.S. on PBS’s Masterpiece Theatre, I came across this one night during a fit of cable boredom. Thinking it would allow me to raze some time until something “valid” came on I started watching. An hour and a half later I was cueing up my home video tape to insure that I would not miss the next night’s conclusion! I could not wait to seek it! I have read Charles Dickens and I am especially fond of Colossal Expectations but could never quite throw myself fully into David Copperfield. This is a shame since Copperfield is supposed to be Dickens’ pseudo autobiography. I found the photography visual moving with the feeling of the time period masterful rendered. The acting was large (Hoskins is droll) with the boy who plays young Copperfield a obvious standout. The memoir finally comes to life and the status and its intricacies are finally revealed (to those who lack the patience to read the book!) . Copperfield is truly a rags to riches yarn in a very convuluted and ironic manner, very great like life itself. Young Copperfield must originate his contrivance in the world after his widowed mother passes away and he is left to the whims of his ill tempered and miserly step-father and step-aunt. How Copperfield goes from being a neglected, uncared for urchin to a well concept of writer will have you watching in fascination. The title STALKER is quite misunderstood because many believe it is a translation from a Russian word that means ‘to stalk.’. Actually Tarkovsky’s script inserted the word STALKER thinking it was a catchy English equivalent for something like a Russian pathfinder or guide. In that context, the central character’s role is better understood, for he spends time leading the writer and scientist toward discovery and revelation, which they ultimately cannot conclude. STALKER is a masterpiece of imposed reality on the viewer. Get no mistake: this film is very difficult to cease with without your utmost attention. Limited artifice, few physical elements, hardly any dwelling, STALKER exists as a dash that draws your mind, heart, and soul into the nature of human existence. Only those colorful and sensitive enough to bolt Tarkovsky’s waves of feeling, emotion, and idea can comprehend his message of possible salvation and redemption through adore and persistent searching for human truth. The writing on the video box implies this is another sci fi film, but clearly it is not. Tarkovsky’s big films are mythical allegories in the tradition of Pilgrim’s Progress or Piers Plowman. For me, Tarkovsky is the ultimate challenge in vivid film making, because he presents and discusses his ideas only in the context of the film itself, not unbiased as a media vehicle to hiss. What strikes me most is his absolutely consistent sense of breeze in all his films: expressionless, deliberate, but fluid and highly organic. He is one of the few immense masters of film as an art get.
This is a film about faith, divine grace and the fruitless vanity stemming from our soul’s novel sin. To quote from one of the characters in the film,” My mind preaches vegetarianism, but my heart longs for a juicy fraction of steak.” And this is the premise of the three characters poke into the Zone – to gape out their steak: to obtain the Room in the Zone that will grant them their wishes; and this coming from the very same people whose professions demands higher standards of good living from them, careers that require them to preach vegetarianism. Of course they have failed in their lives professions, and the characters know this but their inner chaos stem from the private effort in their lives, their failure to live up to their calling and their denial/certainty about their indivisual failures and states of their tarnished souls. Although Stalker is someone who leads others into the the Zone as a guide, his purpose apparently being to befriend others gather their wish and thus bring about happiness for others, yet Tarkovsky hints that Stalker’s outward explaination is dubious as he will not hesitate to originate scapegoats and guinea pigs of his clients in the face of uncertainty and exertion. As for Writer, he is, yes, a writer who is going into the Zone to gape and beg for inspiration and faith in life as a whole; until Writer can net this wish, his cynicism and lack of faith can be summed up in one of his quotes:” A writer can only write about his readers.” Professor is a scientist whose reason for seeking out the Room is unspecified until at the very destroy of the film but I will not remark his reason.He is a researcher who has to beget his boss’s fury and defintely hates his job at the lab. Many tremendous cinematic moments are to be found in the film, in fact the film is one grand cinematic moment non-stop, even after it ends, and this can be attributed to Tarkovsky’s shimmering handling of every aspect of the film; one can even go so far as to say that with this film tarkovsky proved that he is easily the Einstein of cinema. His vision is earth shattering, deviating almost completely from the new intentions of the writers of a new on which the film was based. The ending when it is revealed the reason why one of the guides of the Zone hanged himself despite obtaining a wish from the Room will blow away anyone who lives in the frustrated knowledge of life and all our mortal desires as an empty vainity of vanities without the presence of God and selfless like. The editing, location designs, music and lighting, the human choreography, the wisdom and everything in this film qualifies it as the best film ever made. Totally unique without trying to be. If you only witness one film for the rest of your life this has to be it! It will gain you want to live better, stirring profound thoughts and feelings within you long after the film’s over. This is more than a film, it’s almost a miracle. The British impress ARTIFICIAL Scrutinize apparently has better English subtitles and shows the complete film without cuts unlike the American version, or so I read.
